GTA "Controversy"

So once again GTA is controversial, this time for torture and violence towards women. It's been targeted with petitions and calls for censorship and banning.

What do you think this means for the future of GTA? How do you think R* should respond? (And how do you think they will actually respond?)

What should we as gamers do with this third, or is it fourth, crusade against our culture?

They've been through this countless times. It could've affected them more 10 years ago than it does now.
Basically, what I'm saying is, they won't give a sh*t. They're Rockstar Games for f's sake. They're big players.
It's just like if you were to sue a corporation.

i expect R* to have a snack and collectively continue about their day as if nothing had happened. as should we.

This whole torture and violence to women thing has been around since the days of GTA3, remember the uproar when it was revealed you could solicit prostitutes?

Hasn't stopped them, doubt this will

They've been trying to kill this game since GTA III, not going to happen especially in the US. Other countries it could be a different story depending on laws, and political influence. Sad part is most of these critics are democrats, those same democrats who say the police in this country need to lighten up on their tactics. Truth of the matter is most of these people trying to petition, are nothing more than rich bored professional protesters, the same types you find during occupy wall st etc etc. They've already tried to say that video games such as these influence school shootings. NO, those kids are born imbalanced, and the parents looked the other when it came to their psychological shortcomings.

R* will just sell more games due to publicity...and let's be honest....most of us are totally okay with violence towards women...I certainly don't make any difference when it comes to violence...I'll punch a dude in the face just as I'd roundhouse-kick a stupid bitch!

yep

R* thrive on it & prob even manipulate it themselves to an extent. At the very least it'll only encourage them to lampoon/satirise it next time round.

At the end of the day tho it distracts attn & proper praise/criticism of the game(s), which is the only real negative about it all.

Gerald Spoder

Whenever I hear the arguments against GTA in this most recent spate of controversy, I immediately think of Jack Thompson.

Controversy sells.

This. I bet in VI you can drink hot coffee in 1st person whenever you want.

He was the epitome of what a real life clown in the legal community is like. He's not an activist, he's a flat out communist, and I thank the lord he never has or ever will hold any office in this country.

PoeticWhisper

I don't give a sh*t about what is done to pixels.

This.

Women or Men, I don't choose to murder women in this game, if I want to kill someone and a women happens to be standing there, I kill em. Same would happen to a man.

It means jack sh*t. If you're old enough to remember this has gone on since GTA II.

Don't know why feminists get so butthurt over pixels. IT'S A GAME FOR CHRISTS SAKE! It's not real at all. The way I see it, if you don't like it, don't buy it. For Example, I don't like anime (yeah I know, wtf is wrong with me, etc) I just see it as kinky cartoons. I don't go out and buy box sets of Bleach or sh*t like that. I just ignore it. I don't lead campaigns to ban it from stores and make it illegal, i just don't think about it and carry on with my day.

With this logic, almost any R rated film made should be taken of the shelves. Women, children, men, animals all being violated, and murdered.

Protesting and activism for the sake of it.

I guess I should stop playing it and go play COD instead. That's much more wholesome. I mean, you only have to kill an airport full of innocent bystanders if you press X. You can press O to bypass it, after all. Thank god for humanity.

Rockstar is just laughing and saying thanks for the bad controversy we use to get the game noticed!

What it does mean is that it definitely sells.

In fact; Rockstar intentionally wanted controversy when the first GTA game was released, to tell the public what the game depicted. It was even on the news, and look what happened. About 17 years later, and the game is a multi-million, maybe even billion dollar selling franchise.

Shame MW2 (BO1 and 2 were ok) was the last good COD, it introduced alot of stuff that has had a big impact on the series, such as customizable killstreaks.

This game will still be around 17 years from now when my daughter is graduating college. I truly hope it still is, as long Rockstar and Take Two maintain that sound foundation from a corporate standpoint can't see why it shouldn't. As they've mentioned they have 45 years worth of ideas.

Wait... is there new controversy relating to this game?

The recent one was here (Aus), new age feminazis starting a petition to rid the game off the shelves, which I see it as illegal censorship.

I say illegal censorship because they're not the government, they're a minority.

There's always controversy about games like these. Just wait till GTA VI is announced, the politicians will be crying the blues all over again in the US. As Gerald mentioned Zeus, look up Jack Thompson, he's a disbarred activist, that makes the petitioners in your country look like saw dust. Make it easier here:

Adults should be allowed to make their minds up and do what they want. Now ponder that while I go make some knuckle children.
