The Mysterious One

I would title this topic as series, but considering how there were only two games, I couldn't really classify it as a series. Anyway, what did you think of these games? I remember enjoying the first game and I still have the game to this day. However, I remember a friend of mine had a copy of EGM back then and reading an article about this game before it came out and thought to myself "This will definitely be controversial." I was right in the end. However, as a game, I did enjoy the stealth aspect and how dark the game was. However, the game wasn't without graphic violence and its creepy tone. I remember when I first got it, it took me two hours to beat one of the stages. After a while, I got better at it and decided to save at certain points if I wanted to get the unlockable art and codes.

As for "Manhunt 2," I had that game once and I later sold it. I wasn't exactly too fond of this one. Number one, this game had a "Fight Club" style twist towards the end and I didn't like how the main character was a schizophrenic. Plus, I remember the stage where you played as Leo and going up a building and killing snipers and mercs, not to mention the sequence with the chopper. Let's not forget ow the executions were censored in that the screen changed colors when killing your target. It was a lot more blatant in the first game. I remember it was sort of censored in "The Punisher" game from 2005 when killing the enemy after doing a special interrogation, but I can let that one slide for some reason, adding to it that "The Punisher" was actually a good game.

Now that I think about, why hasn't Rockstar done a third game?

The current technology would make a 3rd one maybe too graphic. Still the stealth mechanics were very well done. Those might be my favorite R* games.

Ive always wondered if the game studios would stop creating violent games when we reach the point when you can kill someone in a photorealistic game. And would I play such a game?

These two games have always been two of my favorite games ever. The asylum portion from Manhunt 1 was such an awesome experience. I think because of the sh*tstorm that happened with Manhunt two, no one at Rockstar really wants to work on a 3rd game...but after all the money they made with V they might be able to get away with it.

i for one would play, the more graphic and violent the better....(am I ill? Lol) But there has been a dumbing down in games, due to a-hole crook politicians jumping on the censorship bandwagon ,the same people who cause so much misery in real lives..and yet they have the nerve to blame video games... I know that I said that I didn't care that much for "Manhunt 2," but I have been thinking about giving it another try but I don't know yet.

However, in reference to the controversy surrounding the second game, why trip about that one when the first one was violent as well? Yes, there was controversy surrounding that one, but I read how "Manhunt 2" nearly got an AO rating at the time. Funny thinking about that, considering how a lot of M-rated games in this day and age would have been AO-rated years ago, GTA V included.

Manhunt 2 got dragged through the controversy parade because of that murder that was supposedly "inspired" by the first game, and the media was making an example out of Rockstar due to the hot coffee thing.

You want to talk about the "hot coffee" thing, try looking at the footage in the porno theater in "Manhunt 2."

I got Manhunt 2 for the Wii for literally a dollar. Some old woman was selling DVDs that happened to have three Wii games in the pile, so she probably had no idea what they actually are. The controls are kinda awkward but I can't complain about something I got so cheap.

The first one will still be more memorable to me for the sheer charm it brought - you can't do that again except for inserting even more of the gimmick that made the first game. I sure do appreciate Manhunt 2 though for being technically the last game in GTA's 3D Universe...

I wonder if they could make Manhunt 3 set in HD Universe.

Bump.

Currently going through the first Manhunt, liking it so far.

I've seen that a lot of people don't like Manhunt 2, and prefer the first one over it. Is this just because of the censored executions? (Because I think there are mods out there for the PC version that fix that.) Or is it just a bad addition to the series in general? I'm just wondering whether or not I should bother with it after I beat the first one. It seems people don't like it that much, but again, I'm not sure if that's just because of the censored executions or the overall game.

Manhunt 2 has a more articulated and complex storyline, the gameplay is pretty much the same, but it has been fairly improved, adding the ability to climb and crawl, "Environmental Executions", "Gun Executions", and "Jumping Executions", just to name a few. Also, when you're in the shadows and a Hunter is searching for you, you have to regulate your heartbeat through button combinations in order to not be spotted, and lights can be broken to create shadows. I think people prefer the first one especially because Manhunt 2 is heavily censored, and considering that executions are the major gameplay element of both games, it strongly influenced the reception of the game from the fanbase.

Only the console versions were censored. The PC version is the original, unedited, uncut version. So without that being factored in, is Manhunt 2 good other than that? Most of the complaints I've seen about it were how it was censored.

I have Manhunt on XBOX, and I play it on XBOX 360...It's nice to listen to Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, At the Gates, Decapitated, etc. while performing executions...

I also have Manhunt 2 on PSP UNCENSORED...So, I when I perform executions, I can see all of the gore...Like this:

Damn. Is it still worth playing? Just beat the first one and loved it. How is the PC version? I know it has audible soundtrack unlike the PS2 version, and it is uncut. Most reviews seem to be for the censored versions of the game.

Also, Manhunt 1, how do the stars work? Can you get four stars on one playthrough of a scene, and then replay it again to get just the "Time Bonus" star, while ignoring the "Style Points" stars? Or do they have to be obtained all in one go? Any tips or guides for five stars?

The maximum amount of stars you can get in easiest mode is 3, and in the hardest mode it's 5...And yes, you can replay...

I know you can replay, but are the stars a sort of checklist like GTA V's mission objectives?

You get one star automatically for playing on Hardcore.

You get three stars for meeting the Style Points requirement.

You get one star for the Time Bonus.

Say I got four stars the first time through by playing on Hardcore and getting enough Style Points. But on my second playthrough, I get the Time Bonus but not the Style Points.

Will I have five stars, or do all the 5 star objectives need to be done in one playthrough?

Playing Manhunt with no radar is one of the greatest gaming experiences ive ever had. Dark room with surround sound on, it was immense. A tough game, but not unforgiving, and just seemed to balance everything brilliantly. Its rare that you are so deep into a game that you feel like you are...breathing..with the character. The tension when you broke cover, heard a shout or went for a kill was almost unbearable.

The second missed the mark entirely, for mainly obvious reasons but otherwise i think the concept either tried to emulate too closely or differ from the first too much. As much as id love to hear news of an uncensored third game, it would likely always have been better left as one.

Yes, playing with the radar off on Hardcore difficulty is an experience itself. I prefer Hardcore over Fetish because anything can happen as you don't know where the Hunters are - you have to open your eyes and ears to figure out where they are, approximately, and this makes the game more enjoyable in my opinion. I agree with you on the tension the game gives to the player, you really feel as the protagonist yourself.

Notable mention to the Hunters dialogue - they are simply brilliant!

Lock n' Stock

Manhunt 1 is my favourite stealth game, which isn't saying much considering I haven't played many of them. I love everything about it, the dark and depressing run-down environments, the ambient soundtrack, the horrific characters, the brutal violence, it's a difficult game for sure but one hell of an experience, like you were playing the role in an old slasher movie.

Manhunt 2 was underwhelming to say the least. I wasn't a huge fan of the psychological horror theme, I preferred the snuff feel in the first game more. It also felt less challenging, and while the environments still had that dark and gritty atmosphere, there weren't as memorable imo. The soundtrack was a step backwards as well. The one thing I can say is that the executions were better, but that's about it.

I'd personally like to see Manhunt 3 with Rockstar's current resources (RAGE, Euphoria e.g). However, it's unlikely with all the controversy that surrounded both games.

Thats it, hardcore, it was amazing. There were times i would actually lean my head to the side as i peered around the corner with cash. The game was so brutal that you really feared being caught. It just built and built and then you get to the levels with them pinning you with the rifles and you know one mistake could just f*ck it all up.

And yeah their dialogue was great, one of the best parts of the game. I forget a lot of it, other than some of the smileys really. Im going to go catch some videos on it now...see if theres a decent hardcore playthrough knocking about

Yeah, going through Manhunt 2 right now - it's alright. The first one was certainly better. Didn't Vienna do MH2, and North did MH1?

The soundtrack/score in the 2nd isn't as good or dynamic, the story so far is alright, and the AI feels dumber compared to MH1. 2 feels like it was the first installment, whereas the first game was where they got everything right. But I guess it sort of was, since North didn't mainly develop it.

I always looked at the torture scene in V as a sort of stepping stone to Manhunt 3. I really hope they do plan on making another one.

A thing I loved about Manhunt is when you get spotted and you start running away from the Hunters - your heart starts to beat faster and you fear to get killed, it's like you're in James Earl Cash's shoes, and that's amazing! Yeah, when the game starts to get harder you really have to calculate every single movement you make.

Actually, my favourite Hunters are the Smileys, they're hilariously insane - haha! You can read all their dialogue here, there are many related videos on YouTube, as well. Surprisingly, the script of the game is long 525 pages: there are a total of 500 pages of dialogue spoken by the Hunters and Lionel Starkweather, while the storyline itself is long 25 pages only.
