School shooting reported in North Portland; at least two victim

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -At least two people were shot at Rosemary Anderson High School in Portland on Friday.

A Portland Fire and Rescue officials said three people were transported to the hospital. Two of them are confirmed gunshot victims. The

nature of injuries to the third person has not been confirmed.

The suspect, or suspects, left the area. Police are searching the area now.

Rosemary Anderson High School is an alternative high school in North Portland.

It's located right next to Jefferson High School and Portland Community College's Cascade campus, which were both in lockdown Friday afternoon while police continued to search for the shooter, or shooters.

Parents of students who attend the school were told to go to Killingsworth Court and Kerby Avenue.

This is the second school shooting in the Portland metro area this year. In June, a Reynolds High School freshman was shot and killed by a classmate.

The shooting also comes two days shy of the two-year anniversary of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, CT.

On Dec. 14, 2012, 20-year-old Adam Lanza shot 20 children and six adults at the school after killing his mother at their home.

I hate to say it but this sh*t seems to happen more and more often. Although less the columbine type with dozens of fatalities. Still crazy

Reports are saying that this is most likely gang-related. They were shot near the school, not inside of it, so I wouldn't call this a school shooting or compare it to Columbine/Sandy Hook.

I agree. This is not a school massacre or mass spree shooting. It was a targeted event from what it seems like.

How long do you think before some media jackass blames GTA?

Stupid, gang related or not, taking someones life I would never have the stomach for. Love goes out to the family of those affected and murdered. This close to Christmas too, sucks :/

I hope anyone that is injured in this event is okay. It seems that recent shootings have perhaps sparked or provoked for more of these horrible tragedies. Hopefully this peak in school shootings will decline soon. I remember back in the 90's and early 2000's that there was quite an ascending nature of such occasions. Like I said, I hope everyone who has been injured is doing okay.

Stop creating new threads for every single shooting, or general chat will make me depressed! Half of the threads are about murder. One collective thread should be enough given the number of shootings.

And people still say we don't need stricter gun control. How many shootings need to happen before they realize the way we handle gun control obviously isn't working well.

We can tighten the gun laws as tight as we want em but criminals will find a way to get em just as they do now.

They break into homes and steal guns from legal gun owners and than those guns are used in crimes.

Just because someone is a felon doesn't mean they won't be able to get a gun, If you have the money you can get anything you want.

Want to know how easy it is to buy a gun? I can drive downtown pull into the first gas station i see and tell them i'm looking to strap and i can buy a gun and be home in 45 minutes.

The question with strict gun control is will it work? Even with stricter gun control gun violence wouldn't be no different in the coming years unless the government enforces some stiff sentences for owning one illegal.

Random off topic debate- Gun laws need to be more focused on preventing the illegal distribution and sale of firearms rather than bashing the legal civilian market, punishing the law abiding firearm owners on the actions of a few individuals.

BUT lets not make this into a whole gun control debate. It always goes nowhere and the thread will get locked

On topic post. Hope other person (s) involved in the shooting get caught (according to the article, one person of interest has been found)

Suspect In Oregon School Shooting Arrested

STEVEN DUBOIS, Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Police in Portland have arrested a suspect in the shooting that injured three people outside an alternative high school.

Authorities said they stopped a vehicle around 1:30 a.m. Saturday at North Interstate Avenue and Going Street and arrested a 22-year-old man. A handgun was found in the vehicle.

Police were searching an apartment about half an hour later as part of the investigation.

The apartment is about five blocks east of the shooting near Rosemary Anderson High School.

Detectives are investigating and will release the suspect's name and charges after he is booked into the Multnomah County Jail.

Witnesses told police there may have been a dispute outside the high school on Friday, just before the shooting occurred at a street corner.

The assailant and two other people fled, and the wounded students went to the school for help, a police spokesman said. A 16-year-old girl was critically wounded while two males were hospitalized in fair condition. Another girl was grazed by a bullet.

"Based on the investigation thus far, the shooting appears to be gang-related," Sgt. Pete Simpson said Friday night in a statement.

Police gang investigators "feel comfortable saying this is a gang-related shooting based on some of the people involved," Simpson added in an interview. Police said they believe the shooter has gang ties. Simpson declined to say which victims might be linked to gangs.

The spokesman said police were still gathering details on the reported dispute.

"There was some kind of dispute between the shooter and some people," Simpson said. "We don't know if it was (with) all the victims or one of the victims."

The victims are students at the high school or in affiliated job training programs, police said.

Police identified the hospitalized victims as Taylor Michelle Zimmers, 16, who was in critical condition; David Jackson-Liday, 20; and Labraye Franklin, 17.

Olyvia Batson, also 17, was treated at the scene after a bullet grazed her foot.

Sierra Smith, a 17-year-old student, told The Oregonian she saw one of the male victims being helped by a teacher inside the school.

"He was laying on the ground. He had blood coming out of his stomach," she said. "It was scary."

Another student, Oliviann Danley, 16, told the newspaper she saw a boy run into the school and yell, "Oh my God, did I just get shot?"

Rosemary Anderson High School serves at-risk students who were expelled or dropped out, or who are homeless or single parents. According to the school's website, 190 students annually are enrolled at the north Portland location. The school also has a second location in Gresham.

Gang violence in Portland isn't a new phenomenon. Some of the violence occurs between rival gangs, but bystanders have also been hurt.

"We've made a lot of progress in addressing the gang problem, but we haven't eradicated it," Mayor Charlie Hales said. "Today's really a sad reminder that it's still with us."

Portland police have said they saw a spike in gang crime over the summer and have complained they don't have adequate resources to address the problem. Recent violence includes a man killed in a drive-by-shooting in June and another man killed in a separate shooting. A 5-year-old boy also was shot in the leg while playing at an apartment complex.

A Multnomah County report on gang activity released in June said crime in the county that includes Portland actually decreased from 2005 to 2012. As inner-city Portland gentrifies, the report said, criminal activity is shifting from northern neighborhoods to areas farther east, including the city of Gresham.

The north Portland neighborhood where the shooting occurred exemplifies the trend. Before Friday, the place once known for gangs had not had a shooting with injuries in nearly four years.

"It brings up a lot of old wounds," Simpson said.

Dani Gonzales, 64, has lived in the neighborhood for 25 years and said it's generally safe but there has always been some gang activity.

"Kids just get silly and get crazy ideas. I don't know what goes on in their heads," Gonzales said.

There was another school shooting in the Portland area in June, but it was not gang-related. A freshman killed another boy in a locker room, and a bullet grazed a teacher before the shooter went into a bathroom and died from a self-inflicted gunshot, police said.

Why no one gives a f*ck when something like this happens in some other country than eu or us? Is our culture so f*cked up that we consider shooting in us to be more important than daily massacres in iraq or syria?

On topic though, it really takes someone who's incredibly miserable and unhappy to do such a thing and kill himself, since police catch the correct criminal in 80% of murders committed, killing someone is closer to suicide, and only the most oppressed and marginalized people who society has failed go out and commit it.

Not only that but last school year, there seemed to be a shooting every week or two from what I remember.

Statistics from countries with tighter gun control show that your question is not even a question.
