SA or IV

the problem with these gta storylines are, only Dan writes them so they tend to be similar

V government story is basically RDR in a modern setting with unlikeable character

VC is just a cliche but at last its a great one, IV wanted to be serious and SA is a good journey

GTA III. It was a nice and simple tale of revenge, and at the same time innovative as far as games were concerned. Really atmospheric, too. It was an instant gangster classic. Had it been a movie, I could picture someone like Quentin Tarantino or Brian De Palma directing it.

VOTE FOR GTA III, WE HAS COOKIES :cookie:

i chose gta 5. i love gta 4 story too but i just like 5 a bit better. i know gta 5 for the most part does not seem too gritty or dark but there are some parts that are. like that torture mission. it was sad to see an innocent man tortured like that. in that dark room downstair reminded me of when roman got shot in mikhials basement. also the whole michael betraying his friends just to get out was pretty cold. and the two endings for killing michael or trevor was deppressing and sad for me. just seeing how happy michael was to find out tracy is going to college and knowing that he is about to die. then their whole argument just made me sad because i realised that franklin became michael. the same thing about trevor he was my favrorite of the three and seeing him betrayed and even having michael help franklin pissed me off. i hated them for that. the third option is the best and the one i picked. the only reason people hate the 5 story is because of its short length i garuntee you that if it was as long as gta 4 then people would complain that gta 5 is too long and that it got repetative. say what you want about gta 4s story but atleast gta 5 had unique missions. most of 4s were go here kill this guy and steal this it was so boring. every one of gta 5s missions were interesting and unique. but i will agree that awsome characters like ron wade lamar steve haines etc should have had more appearences. and the antagonists were ok. i liked steve haines he was a badass and very funny. before you start saying oh dimitri was a good antag dont make me laugh. when was the last time yall saw dimitri or tennpenny shoot himself in the leg. thats what steve did and i salute that guy. and devin weston oh god he was so annoying i wanted to shoot him when i met him. anyways overall i think the gta 5 story was the best. but gta 4 aint far behind though.

every one of gta 5s missions were interesting and unique..

Really? I don't think any of the heist preparation missions are interesting and they're not that unique either. IMO missions like Scouting The Port, Did Somebody Say Yoga? Hang Ten etc also full into the "Not so interesting " if we judge them on a gameplay basis and ignore cutscenes.

Ironically many of them are the same "drive here to do this and/or steal this" type missIons that are moaned about in GTA IV. In general I feel like R* tightened things up from GTA IV, but as a consequence we have got missions that are noticeably more linear and hand holding.

However since this is about the story I'm playing through GTA V's story atm and despite being a known critic there are parts of the story that I like. I've often said the start is pretty solid, but I think the game tries too hard to cram in too many elements. Does it want to be a drama or a comedy? Does it want to be action or a thriller?

Of course it's uncommon for movies, TV shows etc to try shoehorning diifferent elements, but I feel GTA V tries a bit too hard to cover all fronts whereas GTA IV was able to accomplish a much more consistent approach.

It actually has great dialogue, but some of the decisions still leave me scratching my head like how Madrazo could've and shouldve been a much bigger and more intimidating character which instead he turned out to be a pussy. R* almost made this mistake with Bulgarin in TBOGT, but atleast his character still retained some of that hard, intimidating edge from GTA IV even though he turned into a guitar playing douchebag.

Overall I'm enjoying my current playthough of GTA V's story when playing it through with a fresh mindset, but it'll still to me anyway be a story that could've been great with some more of the direction that was used in GTA IV, TLAD and RDR.

I feel obliged to say IV, and I was nearly going to say V, but I'm gonna have to go with The Ballad of Gay Tony.

I have to say all 3 of the IV era stories. Their climaxes were absolutely (I don't know what word to emphasise Amazing) but they wore.

I feel like V's story was spoiled with the thought of trying to make it better...

That's easy, GTA IV has the best storyline by far. Y'know, even people who thought GTA IV was boring but suffered through it will tell you that it's story is unrivaled. Niko, a fresh off the boat immigrant who comes to Liberty City on the premise that his cousin had made it big, but mainly to escape Europe and find the man responsible for having his friends killed. It really is a Hollywood blockbuster script.

The thing with GTA IV's story is its basic premise really isn't anything we haven't seen before, but the way it's pulled off is simply fantastic. Niko is the one who makes it IMO. I couldn't imagine GTA IV's story in the shoes of Claude, Tommy, CJ etc.

Either GTAVC or GTAIV, but I think GTAVC had the best storyline. I haven't played GTALCS, GTAVCS and GTAV had a s**tty story, GTAIII was good, GTA:SA was rubbish and was stretched a lot.

In my opinion, Grand Theft Auto IV had the most deep and darkest storyline in the series. I felt immersed in the character of Niko, of his past, of his goal. I just have never experienced a storyline in a game so gripping before. I honestly would love to experience the story again. The dialouge was sharp, same with the voice acting. While San Andreas was a great journey, IV just felt more...serious, more darker. I would love to see something like that again in GTA 6. Too bad The Benz left, not sure if the series would still be the same without him. But overall, i loved IV's storyline the most.

Nice to see IV leading this poll. Well deserved, it has easily the best story out of any GTA game.

I have replayed it numerous times and still find myself returning to it because its so great

GTA San Andreas is and always will be one of the best GTA games of all time. Despite popular opinion, I think SA takes the cake for best story. Something about it just rings a bell in my head.

Yeah. SA, and VC are some of the best stories in the series, but the best part is that R* didn't sacrifice potential appeal of the "sandbox" aspect of player controlled experiences just because they wanted to tell a story. It was superbly balanced as a fun package! The missions themselves had so much variety, and freedom, too.

Overall, I don't think any one realizes what GTA is all about, would say they don't like the stories in SA, VC, and even III. Great, memorable characters, as well.

Me too, even if I completed the story eight times, I never really got tired of watching. The story is IMO one of the best written, and most clever storytelling ever put in a video game. Hell, it's even better than some really good movies. I personally enjoyed it better than Casino or even Pulp Fiction's (Pls don't kill me) narrative. But despite that, I still very much enjoy those movies, and in my opinion one of the greatest movies I've ever seen.

Also GTA VC needs to get some love here too. Sure, it's cliche ridden with Scarface, and Miami Vice references, but VC's story is something you'd really love to enjoy. The voice acting is phenomenal, the writing may dragged down a bit, but still overall it's still one of the best GTA stories put IMO.

I know this is kind of a stupid thing to say, but I always feel like punching my monitor when I read someone saying Vice City's story is a "rip off" of Scarface. I love Scarface, but I think R* done an excellent job with the story in Vice City to balance the obvious references/influences whilst still keeping it fresh and unique.

Agreed, its my third favourite GTA story (after IV and Tlad). Tommy was a badass and I loved the 80's vibe in that game.

It had great memorable characters (Lance Vance, Ken Rosenberg etc.) and overall a fun storyline. Much better than SA imho (which is often seen as the best 3D Era GTA)

IV and TLAD are the only GTA stories that IMO are truly great and amazingly written. VCS comes close though.

The rest are good and fun to play through but not greatly written.

GTA 4 by far had the best written story mode, with a well developed/complex protagonist, the supporting characters were also great.

Red Dead Redemption is still Rockstar best game however.

I also loved the story mode for GTA 3, San Andreas and Vice City aswell.
