What Grand Theft Auto game had the best story line?

Chinatown Wars had a great story, so amazing that it was close to IV's in my book. Very well written along with strong characters and incredibly fun action.
As Tycek mentioned, it is part of the HD universe, happening one year after IV's canon (IV being 2008 and CTW, 2009). It is worth adding as it is canon with the HD universe. It would be deeply foolish not to include GTA CTW into the poll, believe me.

About GTA Advance, although it was part of the 3D universe, it's not considered canon with anything. It is a GTA game that is just for fun, for the gameplay. The story itself is pretty much ignored, really.

Why? Because it was so deep, dark, and for the first time, R* broke their ways of GTA and made a GTA game wich is dark, and very extreme with a protagonist who only kills for money...

I will go with San Andreas. But that's because it represents what I love about GTA. IV may be deeper, but I prefer a straightforward rags to riches story where you work to better your situation all while having fun with it. Something the game explored with some side-missions like the the Wang Autos missions and yeah, the RC ones (even though they were the biggest pain in the ass at one point).

Let`s face it storylines aren`t exactly GTA`s strong suit. None of the story was that great actually. They vere bad-mediocre-good, neither was the "great".

i choose Vice City because it has a simple and straight forward story:

a story about a man who gets send to do a simple deal and takes over the whole city.

plain and simple, no revenge involved, no love story, no hipocresy about his criminal status just business.

the characters could use more development but it's a 2002 game so that's a given.

GTA IV have best storyline. GTA SA is very close to GTA IV, but GTA IV have little better story.

IV has the best story of f*ckin' course!
It's 10x better than any other game in the series and I've played almost of the series titles, in san Andreas and Vice City.

I liked VC storyline, but it felt over the top sometimes(like once when you have to steal a f*ckin' tank and when you use that goddamned RC helicopter to destroy a construction site) but the setting is great, great 80's feeling overall;

Same applies for SA, great setting in the 90's with all the gangsta sh*ts, but the story goes WAY too over the top once we get to the desert;

VCS had a great storyline ruined by a very inconsistent main character(Victor Vance);

LCS feels like The Sopranos but I don't know, I don't like how much of a Lapdog Tony is to Salvatore;

III's story is very weak but you can tell that wasn't the game's main focus, nor it wsa R* intention with that game.

V's story started out good, we had a type of character that wasn't explored before(Michael), an interesting and very suitable character to the franchise(Trevor) and the token black guy(Franklin). It had potential, but it started to go downhill soon as we met Trevor, then we start to work for the FIB, then there's Michael's family(god, I HATE THEM!), then there's the ridiculous ending...which everone here already knows how bad it is.

I won't comment on EFLC games because I haven't played them, even though I already got the whole story spoiled for me.

I agree, but the only thing I didn't like was how the antagonist only appeared twice, and never directly spoke to Toni.

IV`s story is really good for a game like GTA.

It really gives you the feeling R* went serious with writing IV`s plot. They for once came up with original, diferent and interesting story with very deep background.

 

Say what you like but story effects the gameplay as well. If the story and main characters has great background then you (at least me) can enjoy everything even more. I can even enjoy rampaging more if i know i play as a character with such badass background.

Lol, didn`t you see i ranked IV`s story as my No.1?

IV has the best GTA story IMO. Yes i did pay atention, i played IV more than 15x times because i like it`s story so much.

 

What i meant was no GTA story is really awesome like RDR-kind of awesome but GTA IV is certainly the best out of them.

GTA IV set the bar, and hasn't been met with V IMO. Before that, Vice City set the bar, and it took a long time for it to be surpassed.

My favorite story would be Vice city, started off as Forelli goon and stays at a city hes never been before, does work for many people, becomes so rich he creates his own gang, buys properties and took over THE ENTIRE f*ckING CITY, and overpowered Sonny Forelli.

GTA IV had the best story. It was like a fight to survive. LCS too had a great story. Missions were great too.

 

GTA V had a rather bad storyline and an attempt to connect lives to all 3 protags was even more bad.

I agree that V has somewhat bad story but it makes up by great gameplay, awesome world and fun quotations. So i can live with 1 bad aspect if others are good.

However IV has above average good storyline but it has very repetative missions. But again, the story is so good and interesting that it makes up for repetative missions.

Frankly I don't see what's so good in VC's plot. The protag is a walking cliche and the story is very common(someone ambushes a deal, you set out to sort sh*t, betrayed by people close to you in the end).

 

Tbh all the stories aren't really something to praise about. IV had a well-written plot, but that's actually a very common and overused plot if you read some novels(a guy betrays your unit/squad for money/love rivalry/etc, the protag and some other people survive, protag sets out to find the betrayer...). There's even a Sherlock Holmes story like that. R* added their touches(a funny char. close to you, sexual jokes, killing different guys etc.). Not hating, just saying it isn't like 'Wow R* made such a good story'.

I agree with @son of zeus, i think the same way, none of GTA plot are really that great tbh.

 

If you want to know what a really good story looks like, take a look at RDR. Now that`s an oscar wothy video game story which makes even IV`s story look like a cheap tv criminal.
