Think about who Trevor is - a cannibal, a rapist, a meth head psychopathic murderer. Michael needed to eliminate Trevor and cooked up a plan to do it. Why he couldn't just put a bullet in his head, I don't know... Probably the same reason Michael had Franklin kill Trevor instead of doing it himself. Either way I don't blame Michael one bit. Think about the scene where Trevor shows up at Michaels house, and Michael moves Jimmy behind himself as if to shield Jimmy, protect him. Michael isn't a lying snake, he loves his family and he's afraid of Trevor, for good reason. He did what he did to protect his family. Now think about another scene. When Michael is alone in his house and Trevor comes in. They sit down and conversate. Trevor says that no one cares about him and what does Michael say then? "I do. I care about you." Michael knows that Trevor would never hurt his family, because he cares about them as well.
