JohnSpectre
I played Mass Effect at the recomendation of a friend and know I crave for more epic space battles and intergalactic politics. I thought the Battle for the Citadel scene was epic. Back in the 1990s and 2000s we had space operas like Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Firefly and Babylon 5. Why don't we see space opera shows on TV anymore? So what killed the genre? Bad acting? Considered too nerdy by the general population? Stupid looking aliens? Low quality special effects? Horrible or unrelatable stories? Did the network execs decide the genre was dead? Did people lose interest in space travel? Why is this genre dead on TV? If the genre does not appeal to anyone anymore what can be done to revitalize the genre? What can be done to make the genre more relatable? Do you think this genre should be revived? Either way I think we need more epic space battles and political intrigue on TV. It was long thought that fantasy was a genre once thought reserved for geeks but Game of Thrones has garnered a huge audience. Perhaps a well written space opera with a huge budget could appeal to a diverse audience.
GG14876
It's cyclic; shows keep changing to suit the "desire for new". No one wants to watch the same TV genre for years on end. Of course, with "reality TV" being a great combination of low-cost & always new, more programing is trending that way... (Thank PBS for ruining TV!) Even if you come out with an great space-opera, if the "trend" isn't going that way, you'll just fall by the wayside. Take for example the dystopian films of the past few years... We had a great (subjective) "Brave New World" movie before the whole trend started and it was just ignored (least, from my perspective). Game of Thrones could be considered an extension of the Lord of the Rings hype and combined with almost no other shows of that type, it had little direct competition. AlienTwo
I'm pretty sure they are still trying to make a Star Wars TV show, and I keep hearing about rumored "Star Trek Enterprise" revivals from the NetFlix corner... http://i516.photobucket.com/albums/u330/AlienTwo/GTA/PMBO/PBMO%20Porch%20Sig_2_zpsz7irpplx.png
GG14876
Rumored this and that isn't useful... I keep hearing about a Foundation movie series going back to the... 70s? But thanks to Star Wars and their whole silliness, combined with that horrible "I Robot" "we just used the name but did a different story" movie, it will probably never get made while I'm not below 70 years old... Enterprise probably won't get a (direct) revival, though maybe something where "Westley Crusher" becomes the next captain of the Enterprise, which would allow them a new cast... Star Wars had (I think) a few TV shows... Not live action, but still... Wasn't their "Christmas special" a TV show/event? They might have a push for a series if their new set of movies provides some possibilities.

God save us all, that would be the most horrible show I can conceptualize. Might as well add Jar-Jar as the first officer to make the lameness complete. http://i516.photobucket.com/albums/u330/AlienTwo/GTA/PMBO/PBMO%20Porch%20Sig_2_zpsz7irpplx.png
Mr. Scratch
I think Doctor Who qualifies as a space opera. AlienTwo

The Algerian
The sci-fi genre in general is the most expensive to produce, and is still kind of a niche one. So if a show like this doesn't take off immediately, usually the execs pull the plug. Edited December 11, 2014 by The Algerian
X-Seti
2 sides to this. It's the US Nelson rating system to blame for one. A system that needs to be updated to include the internet age because of advertising revenue and the use of 'bit torrent' that is now in decline. I am nervous to say that if these torrents had the advertising left in then things might have played out different. It's only research that I have done and this also depends of your countries copyright laws. Right now more reality programs are made like The Voice, US version of Strictly come dancing. like before the Syfy (Scifi channel) just poorly planned programming and put Sg-1 and SG Atlantis head to head against most of these reality shows that would also dominate US viewing. Scifi.com at the time also showed Wrestling???? what on a Scifi channel. They didn't and take their content seriously and still do not as we see crappy movies instead. I have a tons of emails and replies to the horrible company about such issues, as I run a UK based Scifi network currently being revamped. . John The Grudge
Star Trek Enterprise didn't have the success they hoped for and eventually got cancelled. That probably had something to do with the genre's decline. Another really good Star Trek show would be exciting.

I had heard that it was a political decision during the height of the reality show days. The ratings actually began to increase in season three and were growing still during season 4 before the show was canned. http://i516.photobucket.com/albums/u330/AlienTwo/GTA/PMBO/PBMO%20Porch%20Sig_2_zpsz7irpplx.png
Mr. Scratch
Stargate was great, shame they had to sh*t on its legacy with Universe. Edited December 11, 2014 by Mr.Scratch
xoC18H21NO3xo
There's trouble on the rise for most television/cable series. Most people I know don't actually watch T.V. series (except Walking Dead) as they are being broadcast, instead they 'marathon' them on Netflix, Hulu or by downloading torrents. If there were to be another Star Trek series (and I desperately need another one), it would be more successful if the seasons are presented in the same fashion as Sherlock (2010, Gatiss & Moffat) with epic story arcs. It can't rely on the same formula (go to new planet-fight bad aliens) and it must have the feel of a 'super advanced collector's edition' version. Every episode must feel like a season finale a la Best of Both Worlds I & II (STNG S03E26/S04E01). I say this because the current generation seems to want everything EPIC when it comes to science fiction. AlienTwo

There were one 2 - 3 stand alone episodes, otherwise they were all broken up into 3-4 episode long mini-arcs. xoC18H21NO3xo 1 http://i516.photobucket.com/albums/u330/AlienTwo/GTA/PMBO/PBMO%20Porch%20Sig_2_zpsz7irpplx.png
Graven
I did not watch the later Galactica, but the original series in early 80s. Wouldn't have missed one episode for any price as a kid. Would like to add "V" the visitors to this, though it was not as epic for me as Galactica. Stargate was good from the newer ones.
