Sektor
rockstargames.com/gta2/journal/journal_list.html always had 2013 file dates, so it's a possible date for GTA2 time setting. The real Crimea riots happened in 2014, so the Rockstar psychic must have been drunk. Edited December 1, 2014 by Sektor Sergiu

The real Crimea riots happened in 2014, so the Rockstar psychic must have been drunk. Hmm, so what about this... if the intro took place in 1999 where Claude got shot and probably put into a cryogenic sleep afterwards and those file dates tell us that at least up to the end of 2013 the bosses were still alive, Claude might as well woke up in 2014 or even later. But this would be only true if we consider that Claude kills all bosses in game as the real end of the game.
Jeansowaty
Riots in Krimea. The GTA2 version of Krimea, a district in Industrial, under control of the russians. But I find it pretty interesting how R* included it, seeing as the riots are happening nearly in the same date.

Filip
Well, conspiracy theories are funny but after you read 4327984 about middle-age secret societes and the same amount about modern politics things stop being so funny. BTW, GTA 2 is set in 1999 so it's bullsh*t.

GTA 2 has no proper timeline, it's just '3 weeks into the future'. Jinx. and Jerome

Because in the beta stage GTA 2 was probably planned to be futuristic and even cyberpunk-ish - and that's why Ray Larabie's cars were cut. Molotok
We have an in-game proof that GTA 2 is set in 99' and there are only e-mails for 2013. Because in the beta stage GTA 2 was probably planned to be futuristic and even cyberpunk-ish - and that's why Ray Larabie's cars were cut. There is no proof of anything whatsoever, neither for it taking place in 99 or 2013. There are only some indications on which basis we can speculate. Basically nearly everything in and about the game indicates that the game takes place in a futuristic setting. To list some: the concept art, the car designs, the online journals, the weapons, some stuff in the missions like human cloning and cold-fusion generators, but the only thing which doesn´t seem to fit is the intro. It can be easily explained with they couldn´t afford to make an intro with cg cars and special effects like there are in movies like the fifth element or making special costumes or they cba to put the effort to design some 3d movie scenery just for some intro, because the whole game is 2d anyway. Filip
There is no proof of anything whatsoever, There is. If you don't know about this, shame on you GTA 2 was planned to be set in the future - look at Ray Larabie's cars, artworks that show a touch of cyberpunk. But the final version of this game is set in 1999. Johny Recaro show. Rings a bell? Edited December 22, 2014 by Filip454

Because the rest just overwhelmingly indicates a futuristic setting. Edit: Btw, he says "millenium is coming" right? So it might as well be 2999 then... Filip
2999 is too far away and it couldn't be if we have mails that are telling 2013. This radio phrase is more like a proof of a little mistake from the DJ and nothing more than that. Radios are always recorded in some short time before the finish of the development and the official release so I think it's legit. Molotok
Radios are always recorded in some short time before the finish of the development and the official release so I think it's legit. Come on, dude, game developers do not simply overthrow the whole game concept/idea they were working on in the last minutes and then try to set it in another time with one radio phrase. They used the futuristic weapons, mission ideas, cars.. everything is in the game according to their concept arts. What would be the purpose of suddenly setting it in the present? To me it just doesn´t make any sense.
