I remember many people moaning about the flying rats in GTA IV. Even though I done those for 100% I don't think I'll ever do them again.

For me doing these collectibles in the HD GTAs is so unrewarding. I done the submarine parts in one go and was disappointed I got jack sh*t for doing them aswell as the letter scraps.

I can't be bothered with anything else. It started with the flying rats in GTA IV and has carried over into GTA V unfortunately doing a whole lot for a crappy return.

If anything had an awful reward it was the Epsilon Tracts. I'm not even going to put anyone else through that horror by explaining why.

Yeah! f*ck GTA V and its sh*tty, too many collectibles! f*ck this game! Worst GTA ever!

But seriously guys, lets keep dropping to our knees for GTA SA!

Of course, I'm not serious at all.

Gotta love this forum's double standards.

Weren't you supposed to ban yourself if the PC version didn't come out in 2014?

How come nobody complained about the collectibles in pretty much every single GTA except V? How is this any different than collecting oysters and horseshoes and why did women in PS2 SA find an oyster collection such a turn on?

More generally I find the entire Story Mode to be unrewarding. It is enjoyable do not get me wrong, but when I can spend 30 mins becoming a Billionaire playing the stock market (doing the last 4 Assassination Missions) after spending say 30 hours completing the rest of the Story Mode, it seems rather unbalanced to me...Not to mention the fact there are no rewards for getting 100% Completion in the game.

Spaceship parts, nuclear waste, letters, submarine parts... Allof them you have to collect 50 each! Why not 25? Or 15? Seriously this takes forever and sucks all the fun out of the game...

It sucks, its not fun, and its unrewarded, but I still preferred it to 200 pigeons.

25 would make sense if there were rewards. I've never really understood why R* adds these things.

I wouldn't call it unbalanced by any means. I would call it a huge reward for beating the game. The money you earn throughout the story is highly important because every dollar will be multiplied when you do the assassination missions. That's what its building towards. They money you earn along the way buys you what you need. clothes, weapons, ammo; but the more you save, the more you will get in the end. The reward for finishing the story is the assassination missions, which gives you enough money to do and buy anything you want. Helipads, hangars, & garages all felt like a reward for beating the game to me because I didn't buy them until the assassination missions were done. Businesses are a reward in their own since they prevent your wealth from disappearing. I'm sure everyone has a different view on it but for me story mode was hugely rewarding.

To give you an opportunity to explore the amazing landscape. They spent years making this game why wouldn't they want you to explore every inch?

Collectibles aren't necessarily required to encourage the players for exploring every "inch" esp. with the open world concept.

This is just my opinion, but the repetitive collectibles are the only feature Rockstar ( and every major modern open world game ) consistently always offers, as they are the most easy to focus on such repetitive filler content to perform throughout the game. It seems as if they're running out of more original ideas. I don't consider collectibles to be a bad feature, if done more appropriate like the murder mystery hunt which sounds slightly more more creative and challenging one ( they could even make them randomize on each play to make it less predictable ) and that's sufficient. I couldn't be bothered exploring around for the same 200 collectibles, esp. when such a huge map is packed to have the only choices in the name of distractions outside the story as collectibles. I think they should exist to a limited count of 50 at max ( total ), or at least, make them more varied ( like GTA SA -- tagging, underwater oysters, snapshots, and using jetpack ) to play, but not as simple as just searching around for them rather more fun and engaging to let the players perform tasks beyond just simple exploring.

They should have made extra efforts for adding a lot more interesting distractions like side-missions, than such boring side-activities for the whole massive map with only collectibles, and above all with no satisfying rewards.

John The Grudge

For now I'm satisfied just to mosey through the game. I'll occasionally just explore and come accross collectables but using a guide and helicopter, then grinding through them all is boring. At some point I'll use a guide but I find taking my time to be more fulfilling. GTA is so much more rewarding when you take your time.

How many Peyotes?

6 off road races

5 street races

4 sea races

15 knife flights

37 peyote?

Signatures are dumb anyway.

And it still is better then that lame *** triathlons (and races, imo). And it can be boring but with a guide it's easy and done very quickly.

You don't have to do it, you know, they are side (optional) quests, if there were less of them and easy and fast to finish they'll suck more.

Algonquin Assassin

You know flying rats sucked when even MVC can't defend it.

Well I've never liked them really. The only reason I done them was for 100%. There's nothing to defend considering the reward was so sh*t and some of them gathered a wanted level. It just wasn't a very well thought out collectible IMO.

Whose nobody ?? Where on earth do you pull these baseless claims from ?? I swear you just make stuff up in your head and make yourself believe, "yeah it makes sense", or "yeah this is how it went". Again in your eagerness to defend V until your dying days and b*tch about V's criticisms as being 'unfair', you talk more sh*t, AGAIN.

You're TOTALLY wrong, many people on here complained about boring it was to shoot pigeons in IV, I was one of them. Same went for seagulls in Ballad Of Gay Tony. Shooting all them birds was a load of bullsh*t, it was simplistic and boring. So many people stated this, where was you ? You obviously weren't around, because you wouldn't be telling lies or making bullsh*t assumptions.

In III and VC, I liked finding the Hidden Packages, simply because it was really finding money.

V just added more boring tasks like finding tons of submarine, spaceship, and nuclear parts, really I couldn't give a f*ck about all that man. I like the letters though because it's got a murder mystery to it, somethng more meaningful.

Because oysters are an aphrodisiac?

I'm one of those weirdos that like collecting stuff in games; I seem to have a reoccurring problem though, without using guides, I'm always ONE short!

100 packages? I have 99

50 UFO parts? I found 49

And so on and so fourth until I pull out my pubic hair in frustration.

Seriously though, for those moaning about it; it's an option, nobody's telling you to find all that stuff. If it's so damn boring then leave it!

At least you only have to do 25 of the stunt jumps for the 100%.

I never understood this, but hey, at least there is a variety as opposed to 200 pigeons. I wouldn't mind collecting things, as I try to spread it out throughout the game, but I do not like it when you have to shoot the items (the pigeons, the red balloons) because then you have to spend time avoiding the cops before you can go to the next item. I have never been able to 100% GTAIV because of that.

I done the submarine parts in one go and was disappointed I got jack sh*t for doing them aswell as the letter scraps.

Submarine Parts? You get the Unique Asea. Letter Scraps? You get the UP (Unique Plate) Landstalker. Space Ship Parts? You get the Unique Space Docker. For Sale Signs? You get the EC Comet.

There is plenty of Special Vehicles you can obtain as rewards for doing them but nobody seems to notice :p

So what's new on PS4? Oh, I know, the added Collectables which is repetitive and boring. No thanks. I've done enough Collectables in my time.

GTA III - 100 Hidden Packages

VC - 100 Hidden Packages

SA - 250 Total Collectables (100 Spray Tags, 50 Snapshots, 50 Oysters, 50 Horseshoes)

LCS - 100 Hidden Packages

VCS - 99 Red Balloons

IV - 200 Pigeons

TLaD - 50 Sea Gulls

TBoGT - 50 Sea Gulls

V - 100 Collectables (50 Letter Scraps and 50 Space Ship Parts) + so many more that are NOT required for 100%, but for the sake of true 100% Completion, I do them all, as well.

All Collectables have been accomplished by me, but they are stupid and they are a trend Rockstar has been doing since 2001. Yet, they remove features like Drug and Gang Wars but keep Collectables. Why not ADD Drug/Gang Wars and remove there Collectable sh*t? Rockstar Logic, figures...

True, but doesn't it ALWAYS spawn at a fixed location after you finish them? So it doesn't need to be stored like the other Special Vehicles I am talking about. I heard in PS4 once you do certain things and unlock them, they always spawn parked at a certain location on the map. It's not a Unique Vehicle unless it's completely gone after said mission, thus you MUST store said vehicle or you'll never have it again unless you do another playthrough, etc. That's what a Unique Vehicle is. A one time only Vehicle that spawns in a mission or side mission that can only be obtained once or twice, etc. After said missions are passed, it's gone for good unless you stored it.

Well I'll add my voice to KrazyFace - I love the collectables. Always one of my favourite parts of any GTA game.

Basically I'm an explorer - what I enjoy most about open world games is exploring the map, the world that the developers have created. And collectables are a great way of focussing that exploration - especially when they place them in parts of the map that are beautiful/interesting, that you might not be led to as part of any of the missions.

When I was playing through, I would get into something of a cycle that went something like "Do a Mission - Find 5 collectables - Do a S&F - Do an activity - Do the next mission.......etc. etc.", and you know what - I think I enjoyed all the aspects of the game roughly equally.

The thing I found most tedious about GTAIV were the Vigilante/Most Wanted missions.

Go to a random warehouse/parking lot somewhere.....have a shootout.....kill everyone......or in other words, exactly what you did in all the missions just without the cut scenes and plot progression. Well if that was my idea of fun, I'd go and play a first person shooter. So I never bothered finishing them....and I'm just fine with having the game 95% complete!

So I, for one, was delighted to find they'd binned those in favour of more collectables!

Collectibles wouldn't be as bad if GTA did something like Bully Scholarship Edition did, where you have to complete a certain task and they'll show up on the map.

I mean hell, there was a website in IV that showed the pigeon locations, and Rockstar had a map of the collectibles for V on the Social Club.

I liked that with the radioactive waste and ship parts you used trackify, or you got a sort of signal as to where they were located - as opposed to just aimlessly searching for the items.

San An set a horrible precedent. I loathed those collectibles, except for the tags as they were at least interactive. The photos were too, but such a grind. The oysters and horseshoes were just annoying - and needed the stupid jetpack to collect.

Something we agree on - these things are boring and trite. Worse still, every game in this genre has collect-em-up elements these days. At least if we got money as we went or unlocked things as we went, it might feel more rewarding, but as it stands, a few extra vehicles isn't much of a rewards.

Also this: f*ck stunt jumps forever.

Yeah we can agree on something there.

That's the point I make whenever I'm always expressing my disappointment and anger for side stuff like gang wars, drug-dealing and others not being included in GTA. I wanna do things outside the of the story that have some kind of strategic or meaningful consequence to doing them, be it be more money, some property, assets, whatever. This is the stuff I wanna see more in GTA, not mundane, simple-natured, stupid tasks for relatively meaningless rewards. Here are my examples :

Gang wars - Reward is respect level, territorial control, recruiting personal armed bodyguards.

Drug-dealing - Reward is more money being made.

Stealing vehicles for import/export - Reward is more money being made.

Burglaries - Reward is making money from stolen goods.

Gambling - Reward is more money being made.

Illegal fighting matches - Reward is more strength, and more money made.

Business/Asset management - Reward is business makes money and various player benefits are given.

I wanna see stuff like this FIRST, not bullsh*t trivial tidbits like collecting this and that small thing that I really couldn't be too bothered about in the first place.

Agreed it does suck the fun out of the game for sure, found using a helicopter for the space ship parts and letter scraps is easily the fastest but still took at least 5 hours for them all.

50 stunt jumps

50 under the bridges

50 monkey mosaics

50 letter scraps

50 space ship parts

30 sub parts

30 nuclear waste

27 peyote

20 wildlife photography

15 knife flights

Far too many collectables

There are also 10 Epsilon Tracts, 15 For Sale signs and 7 Murder Mystery clues.

So this adds up to 404 collectables in GTA V.

TBoGT - 50

CW - 160

TLAD - 60

IV - 290

VCS - 191 (PSP) 202 (PS2)

LCS - 162

A - 121

SA - 280 (PC) 355 (PS2/Xbox)

VC - 195

III - 179

2 - 78

Total of 2256 Collectables across all GTA's from 2 to V.

*List also includes vehicle import/exports as they technically are collectables.

I don't see what the problem is. Yes, there is a lot of these and they are boring but at least they're more or less spread out evenly (and half of them are tracked by SC) unlike most of the previous GTA's. Nobody's forcing you to do them unless you want 100% completion (25 stunt jumps/under the bridge and 8 knife flights out of 50 and 15 respectively are needed for 100% anyway.).

For Sale signs, Epsilon Tracts, Sub Pieces, Nuclear Waste, Murder Mystery, Monkey Mosaics, Peyote Plants and remaining USJ/UTB/knife flights mentioned above are not needed for 100% so that's like 226 collectables that are not needed at all unless you're going for a true 100% (or all achievements).
