Grand Theft Auto: Engaging in Modern Warfare on the Battlefield

I've been enjoying next-gen GTA and I think the new, first-person view actually cool and extremely immersive. The nuances and details in the animations seem pretty good, especially when vaulting over things and climbing in and out of vehicles. Staring down the scope and watching your target ragdoll somewhat realistically as you perforate their polygonal fleshbag bodies is surprisingly satisfying. The gun recoil and ejected shells are pretty damned neat as well. Beating up bums under the highway is a hoot. But I simply can't make it work in actual combat. It probably has a lot to do with the fact that I'm not a fan of FPS's in general (with the exception of Mirror's Edge) and have precious little experience. Whatever the case may be, I get murdered by the AI and absolutely slaughtered by other players. The field of vision feels extremely limited, it's difficult to pinpoint where off-screen bullets are coming from and the cover system becomes wonky and unpredictable. All this combined is killing me from a tactical standpoint.

I played through the first two Modern Warfare games, and FPS worked there; the games were linear and funneled you from set piece. IIRC, the enemy was always coming from in front of you. But, because GTA is a sandbox, getting flanked and/or surrounded isn't uncommon and I'm having a helluva time adjusting. I've seen COD gods murder in multiplayer throwing knives across maps and hitting people on top of skyscrapers and sh*t. Those guys have to have wicked court [map] sense. Maybe this viewpoint works for experienced players and I just suck and need to get better That said, I was hoping to get the opinions of people that played a lot of FPS's. COD and Battlefield and the like... I've got two questions:

1.) How does R*'s first-person system stack up to games designed from the ground up as first-person games?

2.) In your opinion, can GTAO (where you're fighting other humans as opposed to AI bots) be played in first-person with any degree of success or effectiveness?

1) compared to dedicated first person games, GTA in FPV is mediocre to say the best

2) yes, mainly when aiming a weapon in free aim (excluding snipers). but Itll be more effective if FP view is locked

I'm dominating bitches in fpv. I prefer aiming down sights though so this has been right up my alley.

You do need to rely heavily on the radar to make up for the lack of fov though.

you probably keep getting murked because most likely other players are being smart and do combat in third person. Personally i think that servers should separated between third and first person views. It puts you at a tactical disadvantage to fight someone in FPV if they're in third person.

FPV is really cool and it does add immersion but to me its useless for doing anything other than just cruising around and taking in the environment. obviously it's not as polished as a game that is ONLY first person but FPV isn't that bad in GTAV. However, you can tell if someone else is in first person or 3rd due to the way their avatar moves. If someones avatar moves awkwardly and looks like they shat themselves than you can tell they are in 1st person mode.

My biggest problem is look sensitivity. I'm playing farcry 4 as well right now and have no problems aiming quickly but in gta fps I'm all over the place.

I also think that third person is way more beneficial in autoaim. I think free aim levels the field quite a bit.

First person mode has it's uses. It's a tool like everything else in game. Use it when it's beneficial.

It's been most beneficial for me when I have to navigate precarious positions. The third person tip toe controls are impossible to do with any finesse.

I die from falls way less now.

I find FPV awkward. Turning isn't smooth, which I guess is because they've tried to incorporate FPV into a TPV game, where the character runs in circles when you try to turn around. Sure, everyone's in the same boat so it's not as if it provides an advantage or disadvantage, but I just can't do it for long. I hope it's something they address in the future as I'd really love it to work as well as traditional shooters, like COD and Battlefield.

So, in answer to the 2nd question I have to say no, because of the above.

I've been hating first person view for deathmatches, honestly. From playing Battlefield and other games pretty seriously and then going to what is essentially an after thought in a series that's always been third person... Not so smooth transition for me.

Now, I have LOVED it for messing around. Jumping off buildings in first person is terrifying.

Third person combat is better in almost every way. Not just because GTA has a mediocre FPV. FPV can be disorieting compared to TPV.

I switch between first and third person views a lot. FPV for more 'casual' play, though I do enjoy gunfights with NPCs in this view. If i'm up against hostile players, I switch back to third person as i'm more familiar with playing GTAO like that. That said, I don't seem to engage other players as much on NG - might just be because i'm still taking it all in.

Races and missions I play in third person view... but I also select this view on games like Forza Horizon so it's just my personal preference. I'm glad R* provided a first-person view, but also glad they kept the 'old style' camera as well. Switching views on-the-fly is a great option.

Call of Duty FPS feels natural. I have no problems laying waste to a lobby.

GTA V is something that I stick to third person in.

1.) I know for a fact I won't be touching my copy of Battlefield 4 ever again.

2.) Absolutely. I play in FPV only now and I'm still playing mighty fine whether I'm driving or shooting at people. I've always had a preference from the first person perspective so I'm really pleased to get to use it in GTA.

Don't know if I'm the only one, but I drive a lot better in FPV. I can see less, but control the car way better
