If this it needs to be locked, then moderators do your job. But as far as my opinion goes it would have to be GTA Online. Why:

1. Content.

2. Better activities.

3. Better missions.

4. Actually having to rank up.

5. Being able to spend your money on what you want.

6. On Xbox One and PS4 it has 30 players per lobby.

7. Better weapons.

8. Better vehciles.

9. Updates.

10. You can create your own activties.

11. Modders aren't as annoying.

12. More immersion.

13. You don't bored as easy.

14. Interactions.

I did like GTA IV's multiplayer. But as a gamer I felt it lacked a few things that a online feature needs. It being a modder playground sort of mess things up for me in that game. Even though, I do miss the interiors, and being able to turn the cops off. Well that's my opinion. What's yours?

Totally GTA Online. There's nothing to do in GTA IV's multiplayer. It's full of hackers, who freeze you when you don't treat them like gods. GTA V has the better online feature.

GTA IV multiplayer. It felt less like The Sims on crack and more like a traditional GTA except with other people. I remember when GTA IV was new I spent hours upon hours messing around in LC with my mates. Just plain old fashioned fun..

It also functioned from day one unlike GTAO. I was really looking forward to GTAO, but when I actually got to play it when it worked it left a bitter taste in my mouth. The only thing I like about it is the increased vehicle storage which should be in single player any way,

I prefer GTA IV's multiplayer. GTA Online is too restrictive in free roam and is fueled by money. The gamemodes while sometimes fun, aren't unique. Most of them can be found in any other multiplayer game but with more players. GTA IV had more varied gamemodes such as cops and crooks, Chopper vs. Chopper, Witness protection and Mafiya work. These gamemodes take the GTA open-world formula and add objectives that you may approach however you like. Multiplayer also felt more seamless since you could access it from the phone and changing lobbies was much quicker (GTAO is a bigger game though and requires more loading).

They're way too different for me to judge. Feel like having good old fun? IV's MP. Feel like ranking and unlocking a lot of stuff? GTA Online. I must say, IV's missions and deathmatches were better. I do love how you can fully customize your character and buy stuff, like cars, to keep in GTA Online. Again, too different and depends on my mood.

GTA4

-Dont have to have money to have fun

-better matchmaking

-better races/deathmatches

-Interiors

-You dont die in a split second by being shot

-You can turn cops off

-You can chose location and spawn points for weapons and what weapons you want

-Better chance of survival if being in an explosion since the flames warn you

Things that annoyed me in IVMP: Corner-shooters, wall-humpers, lobbies with monotonous settings (Comet, Sunny/Island, Assault Rifles, etc...), which is basically a lack of like minded players rather than the multiplayer.

Things that would have annoyed me on VOnline: Everything?

I don't think it's very fair to put on GTA:O with all it's extra features against GTA IV's MP which was just that. MP. Few games, mainly freeroam. I think IV was good because there was no tie down. No microtransactions, guns everywhere. You could do what you like. GTA:O seems very tied down and very limited.

It's got to the point that me and a few of my psn friends would pay for a DLC just to have IV's freemode system back. I just want to have fun, random experiences in this world and not worry about money and rank.........

GTA Online has a sort of, shall we say, unusual economy? You lose money when dying, have to pay your utility bill and mechanic daily, and paint jobs can sometimes go up to $50,000. I'm not kidding, or getting started.

It can also get repetitive replaying missions and jobs for money. Key word; money. No money? Chance of survival is dropped at least 64.3%. That includes ammo, personal vehicle claims from Mors Mutual, LSC repair costs, property bills, loss of money from death, and buying limited edition content.

GTA IV? No money = still have fun. GTA IV's multiplayer doesn't require money, no mission grinding, not worrying about not having enough money, and also not losing money from dying. Did I mention money? Money.

Also, Cops aren't as annoying, as your vehicle won't get impounded. In fact, you don't have a personal vehicle, so the insurance and impound system is completely non-intact in GTA IV.

You have a much better variety in game modes, such as Cops and Crooks, and more team based modes, such as Team Car Jack City. It's also more fun in free mode as you don't have to worry about claiming vehicles, or retrieving cars from the impound. You die? Person chasing you in an Infernus? No worries, find a car off the street, go to Northern Alderney, find the Sultan RS, get some grenades, and some SMG ammo (all off the ground and free of charge) and get revenge on them.

However, I do like GTA Online's concept, and features, however compared to GTA IV's multiplayer, it proves something.

Simplicity is key. You try to make the game too realistic, with impounds and property costs, it might become a bit too overwhelming, not to mention grinding the same mission to get a car.

I know lots of people may disagree with me but I think GTAO is better, at least today. Don't mistake me though, IV's multiplayer was fun, no rules and everybody could wreak havoc like they want. But it ended up being full of hackers and you couldn't roam 2 seconds in the airport without being blown up by an invincble player. GTAO is more structured and has a better defense against gamebreaking invincible butthurts.

i don't really feel that the people saying gta iv multiplayer wasnt as good because of the hackers, I don't recall ever hasving problems with gta iv multiplayer on console and I'm sure the pc version will have hackers as well... but all in all I remember wishing for money when gta iv multiplayer was out... I just didnt expect them to charge you up the yin yang for everything else. I like buying clothes and cars and weapons, but not sure why we have a maid and utilities in the homes we buy. gta iv have become a more fun game to play online since gta v came out, primarily just true fans of it play now; even people cheating mostly leave you alone if you ask.ultimately I would like ivmultiplayer with SOME aspects of money from V, also maybe have randomized weapon spawn points just to mix it up a little.

The Sims on crack

You say it like it's a bad thing though ;)

I prefer to think of it as the Sims meets Need for Speed whilst being bullied by COD

A few of things that make GTA O better than IVs multiplayer

- The sheer scale of contact missions alone just dwarfs IVs co op game in both quantity and quality

- Rockstar have some investment in the game so they have systems in place to deal with griefers, hackers, abusers and mouth breathers

- Customization - in characters, cars, vehicles, even weapons

- Variety in vehicles - bicycles, planes, submarines, Cargo Bobs etc

- Progression - rewards, unlockables, achievements

- Snapmatic

- Off-Roading areas/ rural areas, better stunt jumps

A lot of the criticism from the IV fanboys usually amounts to the same things; not wanting to work for stuff (laziness) selective memory nostalgia junkies (hipsters) complaints about the game being too hard (pathetic) or complains about it's impact on single player (fair enough)

All in all I agree with the OP, even with it's blatant money grabbing and technical flaws, GTA O is just better. You could argue that IV was made in a different era so we should judge them differently, then it just becomes pointless and impossible to even compare the two. Maybe it is? For the sake of discussion I think GTA O is obviously better.

For me IV Multiplayer.

- Much more havoc around the map.

- Less restrcitive I think personally.

- Doesn't cost any money to buy insurance etc if your vehicle gets 'accidentally' destroyed by other players

- Endless fun in Free Mode, even in other modes whenever you want to.

- Takes a long time to level up, especially between 7 and 10.

Sure IV might be less busy than 5 years ago than now, but still as fun.

- Its addictive if you want to mess about on the 3 different games of the IV era.

With V:Online for me, its just that even though I haven't played it since the first day of original release, doesn't have that classic GTA feel just by reading topics on here and my own decision to not go near it for a year.

Maybe its that IV era nostalgia of Multiplayer, but I can't find myself to 'fit in' with V: Online it at all.

the only bad thing about IV's multiplayer is that you need so much grinding in order to get to the maximum rank, in GTA O it actually feels like you're progressing.

that said: GTA O

all you guys worried about money are straight poor, games been out how long and u still worry about money, come on man, get your money up

gamers scream for realism then complain when they get it

both games are different, before release everyone knew money would be the focus, like life, guns scattered around the floor in free mode wtf?

you could even own a place or own a car...

are you seriously saying gta 4 is better than gta:O...hell NO! be serious lol, Ive had so much fun with randoms and good friends on gta online, much better, the map, the activities, the everything

gta 4 is dead move on.... most ridiculous thing ive heard, nostalgia is one thing but lets be real mate

and btw when i first played gta4 it was the best thing I ever played, but ive moved on

It's not nostalgia. RPG system are sh*t, and they don't really fit with GTA.

Nah nah nah Gta 6

GTA Online is better in many ways though I do like to head back to TBOGT multiplayer for launching my friends in the sky with a grenade launcher with friendly fire off (am I the only one who does this?)

I voted for GTA online even though I only played it twice. The hackers in IV are everywhere, even when the game was fresh.

I tried to replay the GTA IV multiplayer a few days ago ... And it was god awful.

First of all, it's quite empty, which is normal because the game is 6 year old, the problem is that half of the remaining players I came across were modders.

But the worst, is by far the different activities. The deathmatch are horrendous with the GTA IV control mechanics (heavy characters, bad cover system, changing weapon can require up to 4-5 seconds ...), so are the races etc... The missions were a little more interesting, but there's only two or three. Moreover, I don't like at all the ranking system, it takes way too much time to reach the next level.

I used to play it four years ago, I had a few fun moments ... But nothing memorable.

Then we have GTA Online.

I'm playing it since the last update (which contained the Furore GT), and I have to say that I'm actually enjoying it.

There's tons of flaws, for example the police on free mode is a real nightmare, 95% of the fan-created deathmatchs are ridiculously bad (I'm especially referring to those god awful "be the fastest reaching the gun" deathmatch), the community is not extremely mature ... But at least, there's a lot of fun stuffs to do, and the progression system is rather well made. Every time I start to play, I know I'm gonna find an activity in a few minutes at worse, and have fun. Moreover, for the first time in the GTA history, the in-game money is actually useful !

And to all of those stupid "I'm a blind GTA V hater" : I've been playing for 88 hours, I'm level 64, and I've never ever been solicited a single time to use my real money to buy in-game money.

And by the way, I'm a true SP player, I didn't want to play GTA O because : "It's online, so it's gonna be boring and full of retarded people ...", and I made the mistake to listen to those who were whining about it. The reality is far from being that bad !

"Yes but I can't have fun because players kept killing me everytime in free mode !" Well passive mode, or move your virtual ass ! Show them that you're not a looser ! Even players with a higher level than you can be easily killed if you outsmart them. I can't count how many times very high ranked players tried to kill me, but were so dumb that they killed themselves in the process .

^ What filters did you use for freemode?

It's still pretty busy for me on both PS3 and 360. Sometimes not on a first try but I do most of the time get a lobby with 10 or more people in it.

The combat and cover system in IV is great! Your character doesnt shuffle his feet to the end of the object your covering, you can roll and crouch making combat way more fun and responsive, and the races dont use crapy catch up/ slipstream

I'm gonna have to go with GTA IV on this for a few reasons.

1 - More organized activities. GTA Online may have a lot more varitey, but I believe GTA IV has more exciting game modes - especially when you play with friends! GTA V is some what better in this sense - only because of the Content Creator.

2 - The ranking system is better. You don't need unlimited ranks in a game.. 10 is enough. I remember playing GTA V every night during the Summer time just to reach Rank 10.. and the awards may have been just "clothes", but they were worth it in my opinion. It made you feel important. In GTA Online, you can have the same cars, and clothes as another person..

3 - Free modes in GTA IV weren't cluster f*cks. GTA Online is filled with people blowing sh*t up, setting bounties on each other for no reason, and all types of crap. Whether someone is chasing you in a Lazer jet, or you're being hunted by Mercenaries, GTAO free mode is definitely a mess.

The cops are broken on GTA Vs online, if you so much as interact or touch anther player you get their stars too.

The only thing I really like over GTA Vs online than 4s, is you can loose the cops easier you don't have to go to a paint-n-spray.
