CarnageRacing00
It's very simple. GTA IV cars crushed more easily and to a greater extent. GTA V cars LOOK better when they're damaged, as in the visual effect of damage looks more convincing as opposed to the crinkle aluminum foil cars in GTA IV. Here's my Dukes after a tumble down Chilliad (I tried to fight the train right after, but it exploded on impact) So even though there's less of it, the damage is still better looking. I can deal with that, BUT I am a little bothered by the fact that roofs and doors can't be smashed in anymore. I don't get why people keep mentioning IV, V's last gen damage was great it just took a little longer to wear down the vehicle. It's only in the new version that the damage seems to have suffered because of the invincible roofs and sides.
Hazel Mae
The reason cars end up exploding on a crash is because the gas tank took too much damage. This has been known since the JSticks11 dude first leaked the game in 2013.
Glenni91
Should be relatively easy to fix this, when it's out on PC. I remember messing arund in the handling.dat file for the crash deformation sliders in GTA IVs files. I can't remember what the default was, but let's say it was 2.0, if you increased it to 5.0 for whatever vehicle you selected, it would then deform quicker, and deform more, based on the crash. A simple example of this is that a regular car in GTA IV will derform, while for instance the APC by default won't, but you can make it deform, by increasing its deformation numbers. I think they did the opposite in GTA 5, same system, but they toned down the deformation to something like 0.5 or around there. So there's definitely hope for the PC version. As for the "scriptedness" you would find the same in GTA IV too. Run into any of the subway trains, and then compare it to running into a wall, it definitely smashes your car up.I think this is because of the "mass" parameter, also in handling.dat. A car has like 1700, while most of the solid track following objects go by 25000. So obviously Mass 25000 > 1700. That's going to mess your car up, while it's not entirely realistic, this is just how it's worked in GTA for most part. Trains can basically just go "f*ck you I'm a train!" at any speed in the games. The_B1u3_Jay
lol, at all of the GTA:V fanboys getting butthurt because people keep comparing the vehicle deformations to GTA:IV. Cebra

S1N0D3UTSCHT3K
crash physics are better now and while IV has better deformation, V has muuuuuuuch better particle effects and also much better scratches, mud, etc also cars drive faster in GTA V and on PS4 cars slide and crash into other cars better than V or IV on PS3 so dirty cars, the 'impact' of cars on the highway, the physics of cars crashing, etc look better on V but yeah the deformation in IV is still the most fun Frito-Man and CarlitoDorito
twigs2001
This is the sole reason i stopped playing the game last year and not bothered with the new gen version, i just find it completely dull and very boring, i was hoping to enjoy some epic rolling down the mountain type stuff etc in V but yea...fail. So, just because you don't like how the cars drive, you stop playing...? I can't stop laughing! When driving a sanchez offroad is no different to a superbike yeah i stop playing, no fun at all, its like driving a brick, don't even have suspension in this game omg. Easiest way to prove this is to join an offroad motorcycle race. You pick a super bike while everyone else uses the Sanchez. You won't stand a chance. I bought a Sanchez 2 and modded it out fully because of one race where I was up against every type of supposedly faster bike in the game... and because the race had several dirt road sections, the Sanchez allowed me to fly right through taking turns at high speed and gain huge distance on the other bikes. They would start to catch up on pavement, but as soon as we hit offroad again, i was gone.

GTA 4 and V have better car damage than a lot of racing games! that's a good thing surely lol Edited November 29, 2014 by CarlitoDorito

woggleman
It might take longer to damage cars in V but you can really mangle them if you bang them up enough.
S1N0D3UTSCHT3K
In GTA IV however you could dynamically crumple up your vehicle and depending on where the engine was, it would never explode Same can be done in V... not the roof anymore but you can crumple forever without exploding. You can even, if perfect, explode a car without exploding the gas tank. If the explosion is just far enough away, the car will be damaged by the explosion but the gas tank won't explode. In GTA V however it is possible to do the same...... but you have to hit certain objects and this is where it feels scripted to me. If I run into a wall over and over again, my car will just explode, also not true... any damage at all will derform a car. it's not "certain objects." if you run into a wall at X speed, it will never ever explode. it only explodes if you hit it hard enough to cause a fuel leak and enough friction/heat to ignite the engine block. but if you're not going fast enough to explode on impact, the car will never explode. eventually, the engine may ignite and burn out but it won't explode unless you also damage the fuel tank if I gently tap a train that isn't even moving and,my car will suddenly be squashed in half..... wtf? not true... if you hit a train that isn't moving, it's just like any other wall.... also not true, if you barely hit it at a glance, if the contact with the train is light the damage will be light. it's only heavy if it's a direct and it only explodes if you're going fast enough to cause a fuel tank explosion all damage is dynamic... it's easily testable. take a hammer or bat to a car... deformation is 1:1 with where you hit. bumpers falling off, etc is only if that area is hit wheels lock up, etc only if they're specifically hit car scratches and blood directly are dynamic to where you hit mud and dirt is somewhat scripted and car fires have 2 separate dynamic parts, the engine block which can ignore without explosion and fuel tank explosions cars can even have multiple explosions if the fuel tank doesn't explode on the initial explosion i feel like this post and some others in this thread have not actually tested or played V very extensively it's funny because V's car effects are actually less scripted than IV IV has easier deformation, and better deformation now that V's roofs don't deform but V has far more dynamic 1:1 damage or 'wear' effects CarlitoDorito
A5R
I used to jam the car between the railway track's and an oncoming train and after the crash the car would be a crumpled mess but now it's meh because most of it stays intact without a dent. So I would say Gta5 on ps3 had more dynamic damage than next gen. Anyway, have they got rid of detachable wheels too? I haven't seen a single civilian car get a wheel detached after getting t-boned like in last gen. Edited November 29, 2014 by Shootaholic
