Leevikingpin
Like the title says the RGB settings on the PS4 are broke. PS4's are set to automatic out of the box and it even says automatic is recommend. Automatic is supposed to communicate with your TV but the setting is broke and sets the RGB range to full (or limited) instead of what your TV supports. 99% of TV's are supposed to use limited and if your TV is supposed to use limited but set to full or vice versa then the colours, contrast, brightness and sharpness all get mixed up and it can crush your blacks and make textures look less sharp. so set yours to the proper setting and watch the Colours, brightness, contrast and sharpness all become fixed! You have to go to settings - sound and screen - video output settings - RGB range and then change it to Full. Then go to this link in the ps4 browser http://m.neogaf.com/showpost.php?p=127322789&postcount=18 And if you can't see the individual boxes the change to Limited. Trust me on this, I changed it today and there are a lot less jaggies. Oh and mods, don't move this topic just yet. Give everyone a chance to see it first. biggerboat90
Pretty sure automatic defaults to limited.
philbeau
Pretty sure me too that automatic 99% of the time is using limited. You can see this thread on neogaf that talks about it too: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=883355
Leevikingpin
No it doesn't, it displays in either depending on what your TV tells your ps4 to display. Like I said, this setting is broke and causes the ps4 to display FULL RGB range. Anyway go to this link with the ps4 browser. http://m.neogaf.com/showpost.php?p=127322789&postcount=18 And switch between full and limited, if when using full the boxes look too black then switch to limited! @phil The OP is using a monitor Edited November 24, 2014 by Leevikingpin
philbeau
I will try it on my ps4 but I use a monitor (sony playstation 3d display) Will try to see if the automatic is defaulted on full or limited.
Leevikingpin
It doesn't matter if it defaults to limited or Full. The point is the setting can be messed up, everyone deserves to have a good picture, the best picture they can get without professional calibration. MosquitoSmasher
These kind of settings can really make for deeper colours and black levels, but can indeed also crush black levels and detail. But it also makes for more aliasing? Never really noticed that.

But it also makes for more aliasing? Never really noticed that. Yeah if the RGB range is different to what your TV supports then the blacks contrast too much and cause jaggies to become more defined. If the TV and Playstation 4 have the correct settings then the blacks don't contrast and cause the jaggies to become less defined.
philbeau
I don't understand that you say that doesn't matter if the automatic options defaults to limited or full, but it's your main issue with this setting (that it could potentially use full instead on limited on a limited rgb monitor or tv). DaRkL3AD3R
I've yet to see a TV output a subjectively worse looking imaging using full rgb versus limited. It has always looked better. I'd take slightly crushed blacks than have an ugly washed out overly bright image.

If your TV is limited and the PS4 is limited then they won't be washed out. Crushing blacks is the worst thing you can do to your video game, you lose so much detail. DaRkL3AD3R
If you're crushing the bottom 10% of the spectrum yeah it's bad but a little bit of crush doesn't bother me and I'll take the increased colors and contrast with a hint of crush over anything else. Leevikingpin
OP. Post some before and after photos. Before and after photos wouldn't work because if your TV isn't properly set then it wouldn't show the differences. That's why I posted this so you can see for yourselves. MosquitoSmasher
@Darkleader I agree that RGB Full (or PC on Xbox) is better looking, gives richer colours and dark areas or nighttimes in games look great. But it also can make things look too dark and in some games where you cannot even alter brightness....i am looking at you Halo TMMC, sigh...it sucks and you have to alter the tv brightness again. However, all this depends on what you select on your tv. Do you set the dynamic range to auto, limited or full? I was told that if you use RGB Full you have to set the tv to Full as well, but to me..this makes it look pretty similar to limited. However if i set the tv to auto, boy....now that gives me the richer colours, but probably also crushes blacks.
Racket89
I was told that if you use RGB Full you have to set the tv to Full as well, but to me..this makes it look pretty similar to limited. That's how it's supposed to be. There should really be no difference noticeable between RGB full being received by a monitor set to RGB full and the same with RGB limited on the console with limited selected on the TV. Consoles make up for the difference in games so you don't lose out if you use limited. And if you're using a TV for your console, you're safer using limited as even if a TV has a setting for handling RGB full, it doesn't mean it will truly handle it as well as a proper monitor on full. esato
OK, I've set my [edited] ps '4' on full range RGB and i can see all black squares, even the first one. By the way, even in RGB Automatic I can see all squares... So I should use rgb auto or the full? And what about the other option, Y PB/Cb Pr/Cr range? Should let in automatic or in full, too? I couldn't upload this in a bigger size, but.. My TV supports RGB FULL? woggleman
It's always best on any console to manually set it to match your tv for the best quality.
CrAzZyKiLLa
did play around with some settings when had ps4 plugged into my pc monitor which had a very poor picture as stated in my post here(pics included): http://gtaforums.com/topic/748569-gta-v-ps4-jaggies/ could this be part of the problem perhaps? Not a problem on my tv just the pc monitor.
MosquitoSmasher
@Racket89 Yeah true man. But i actually like it better with RGB full (or in my case PC on my Xbox One) and with the tv set to auto. I just tried out Halo TMCC with it and it maps the colours much richer, it makes the overall picture quality a lot better. I also don't really see the black crush. I tried out most of my Xbox One games with this setting and i love it. However...i do not see the things i should see in the calibration setting on the console...but hey...so be it. Long as i like how it looks, right?
NYC PATROL
I tried limited and full on my TV. I also looked at the RGB test people have been passing around and both Limited, Full showed the same amount of squares. http://m.neogaf.com/showpost.php?p=127322789&postcount=18 Now while they did show the same amount of squares I couldn't see the first line with either. I'm guessing I just need more brightness or something. Maybe an ambient light in my room could also be messing with results. MosquitoSmasher
@NYC patrol Nah man, more brightness probably won't help a thing then. You either see it or you don;t. Just make sure to enable it on your tv too. I have it set to auto on my tv, and while i not see the eye icon in the 'calibrate hdtv' setting on my console, i do like how it looks in my games. At the end of the day that is what is most important in my book.

donnii
Great post OP. I'm sure this will help a lot of people out. I actually had the right settings, but when I first bought my PS4 and played infamous SS I thought something wasn't right. Everything looks dull and washed out if you don't have the correct settings for your HDTV.
