Despite the problems ya'll still playing the game.

Now San Andreas on the Xbox360, yes Xbox360, had some serious pop up and texture issues to the point where you crashed into invisible walls and lamp posts.

So?, the game is still great, it has some problems, that we are poiting out.

I certainly didn't expected to be this bad, we all knew that there weren't going to get the most out of the new consoles just yet, but i wasn't expecting to be this bad.

There are a lot of pop ups even with a SSD. I have one in my ps4 and by looking on gameplay on youtube, I see that I have the same pop ups that people with the stock hdd.

The loading time is faster, as for performance and texture streaming didn't have any improvements.

There is anoter thread about ssd vs hdd here: http://gtaforums.com/topic/748396-ps4-gta-5-hdd-vs-ssd-loading-time-and-character-switching-in-story-mode/

Do you have the disc version or digital download?

I have the digital download, was hoping to see a Digital foundry article to compare digital vs disc, ssd vs hdd, digital on ssd vs disc on ssd....

At the moment I'm having assets load up about half a second from each other in cut scenes, did somebody say yoga, where your not even moving, bits of Michaels house were appearing, trees and walls etc. Really bad. It's not a subtle thing.. It's broke.

I'm definitely not the only one with these issues, though seems some do have it and some don't.

The ones that don't, simply saying there isn't an issue because your not experiencing it isn't going to help at all.

There clearly is for some, myself included.

In game, traveling fast, yes I'd expect it, but not during relatively static cut scenes.

I'll get a video up of it when I'm home from work and also open a ticket with r* linking them to it.

Frankly, I suggest anyone else with the issue do the same so they can see it and are fully aware, we've done our bit then.

exactly the same problem I currently have, which I swear wasn't there for the first few days. A cut scene with Trevor (standing still) and bits of litter etc were flickering on the ground next to him, something really isn't right there.

Please update if you hear back from Rockstar.

thanks

Here is a video I made. Look at the plant behind Michael. And the shadow by the door. This is actually the best i've seen it as well. Normally a lot worse

There is no texture or object pop-in on PS4.

Oh, yes there is... I was driving a turismo down grove street and a parked van just magically popped in at the last second... Texture pop in's are quite frequent aswell...

I know it's the wrong console, but due to my poor internet I played the xbone version without the day one update for days, I was shocked at how well the game ran and loaded my surroundings, I downloaded the day one update and I have to say I'm almost sure it caused pop ins, especially when I turn around fast in fpv, whole objects pop in, props on walls 2 metres behind my character and this never used to happen, I'm almost sure of it.

I do live in Australia and it is f*cking hot, I find my game runs better if I point my pedestal fan at my xbox, maybe the people complaining have their ps4s in a cabinet or somewhere with poor ventilation?

Happened in my game too.

Take a look at my video non-believers. Will SSD help with that? If not, I hope rockstar can manage to fix it in the future because sometimes its unbearable.

Tried it myself and had the same results

I have a Kingston v300 240gb SSD.

I've seen pop in here and there on ps4 but it's hardly distracting. Not even a big deal really.

Has anyone else noticed the high grass "grows" instead of just popping in? I've notice this when I'm driving at high speeds. It's like it kinda grows and bounces when its done sprouting. Anyway this could be another design choice to see where we are going at high speeds in fpv? Kind of like the roof damage on cars.

that is from the havok engine nothing to do with the performance of next gen consoles will still do that on pc

First off, GTA V doesn't use Havok. It uses RAGE. Second off, Havok pertains physics - absolutely nothing to do with the visual aspect of the game. Third, that's not texture pop-in, that's simply LOD-popin on the high-detailed shadows. It's there because it's barely noticeable and gains performance for the game - it's optimization. On PC, LOD-distances are usually way further out than on consoles, so if you want a game that doesn't have that sort of detail-pop in, you have to get the game on PC - end of story.

As I'm sure a lot may have noticed now having the game for a week, there is considerable texture and shadow pop in still present in the PS4 version of GTAV.

My question though, is will installing a SSD, or the more affordable SSHD, reduce this? Does anyone have these types of hard drives installed and can comment on the game performance other than load times using these types of hard drives instead of the PS4 hard drive.

Yes. The PS4 hardrive is a 500gb 5400RPM, which is kind of slow and outdated. PC now and days used 7200RPM or more. I recommend getting an SSD drive for your console, it will indeed help with speed up loading times, and help with performance.

The difference between a 5400rpm drive and 7200 is nothing to do with texture nor is 7200 something awesome. My PC was running a 10,000 rpm drive in 1997 and it was slow as sh*t. :). There are more important things than rpm.

I get pop in's all the time, but usually I am going pretty fast. However, I have noticed it more recently than before, especially with lights near and far. Either way, I just want to see the PC kick some ass and put all this mess to shame.

Haven't had any bad pop in issues. It's quite impressive. Only if you fly low over a dense area, you may see some and it may incidentally happen in places where I don't really notice it.

Shadows and LoD still have a pretty aggressive transition, and some of them could've been handled better. Some trees look fuller in their lowest detail form, which looks weird when they are swapped out. The shadow model obviously hasn't improved since last gen, aside from the obligatory resolution bump.

But those things are simply where it shows it's last gen roots. It's an enhanced edition, not a rewrite. There's obviously limits to what you can achieve in terms of visual upgrades and performance without redoing entire parts of the game. I think with GTA V now, you're sort of looking at those limits.

That it looks so damn impressive also has a lot to do with the sorry state of current gen games. Some truly 'next gen' games are only now starting to trickle in, but most have been delayed into 2015.

There's no denying the game looks impressive, and plays just as impressive.
When it comes to pop in or the distance in which things fade into visibility there is a level of personal tolerance, and for me, I think these things would be better rendered from a further distance. i.e. flying over Blaine County on the way to Mount Chiliad, you see all the bushes just fading in below you quite visibly. The general draw distance for the game is impeccable but for smaller assets it seems they wait until you are very close.

This doesn't ruin the game for me, but it's clearly noticeable.
This has always been the case with GTA games, I just thought it would have been better handled for this version.

non believers? i thought u guys coplain about popins. now all this video shows is shadows going from lesser to more detail, thats what gamegraphics do. even if this video would show a pop in, i am sure it would be some minor forgetable graphical glitch that no one cares about!!!

there are alot of complaints on here, but this is really more than crossing the line. its makes me sad, i wanna stick my hand in the sand and wait it out a few hundred years, hoping humantiy will grow smart again.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just to jump in on this topic again, this video here taken from GTA V ps4 (w/ SSD), shows the user flying a jet over the countryside, and the bushes on the countryside below are being drawn in at a noticeable point. The same way they are on my Ps4 without SSD.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X99YUpeJZSQ

So it's nothing to do with texture pop-in or HDD performance, but more so that this is the distance from the player that Rockstar decided to draw in these assets so no amount of better HDD performance will improve on that. The game is great, and I can certainly live with this knowing that even with an upgraded HDD it won't improve performance.

I was playing last night, and driving along the freeway (we call it motorway here) and the street lights were literally "switching on" about 10 feet in front of me.. It looked ridiculous!

There is something really odd about the pop-up in GTA..

While I have noticed occasional pop-in (specifically electricity pylons while I'm speeding on a highway), I think by calling it "considerable" the OP is greatly exaggerating. I think the performance with regards to pop-in is very good.

As mentioned, it's more than likely the draw distance rather than pop-ins. Grab a sniper and use the scope on it and you'll notice that objects fade in as you zoom in and fade out when you zoom out. That's because it's hardcoded to be like that. Here's a video I captured as an example.

I've had maybe a few objects pop-in while driving at very fast speeds, such as vehicles parked on the side of the road and street signs, although not nearly as common as on the PS3.
