Transferring Your Previous GTA Online Characters and Progression

Since Rockstar has removed the ability to transfer characters as of March 6 2017, this topic will be locked and unpinned.

Note to anyone reading: if you're looking for assistance with returning player content, that's a different matter and is still possible - feel free to open a thread if you're having an issue, or if you're looking for someone to help get you the returning player content, create a thread in Find Lobbies & Players (be weary since doing so involves passing over account information) or use Classique's thread if he's available. The only thing that's been removed is the ability to transfer online characters between systems.

Old thread:

Straight from Rockstar Support (and what will transfer) :

Transferring to PlayStation®4

What you need:

  • A copy of Grand Theft Auto V on PlayStation®4.
  • Previous Grand Theft Auto Online character and progression data on either PlayStation®3 or Xbox 360.
  • A Rockstar Games Social Club account. If you do not already have a Social Club account, you will need to create one. Click here for info on creating an account.
  • A PlayStation®Network account and PlayStation®Plus membership.
    • If transferring from PlayStation®3, your Social Club account will need to be linked to the PlayStation®Network account used to play GTA Online on both systems.
    • If transferring from Xbox 360, your Social Club account will need to be linked to the Xbox Live account used while playing GTA Online on Xbox 360 and the PlayStation®Network account used to play GTA Online on PlayStation®4.
    • If you still need to link your Social Club account to your console account(s), please click here for more information.
How to transfer your previous Grand Theft Auto Online character and progression data to PlayStation®4:
  • Start Grand Theft Auto V on PlayStation®4 and log into the PlayStation®Network.
  • Enter GTA Online via the Character Select Wheel or the Pause Menu.
  • You will be given the option to transfer your previous GTA Online character and progression data, along with the opportunity to change your characters appearance again. If you wish to complete the transfer later, you can return to this option via the Online section of the Pause Menu.
  • Once you have chosen to transfer your previous character and progression data, the transferrable in-game money, RP and Rank of all previous characters will be displayed. These are the characters that will be transferred to PlayStation®4. If you have previous character and progression data on both the PlayStation®3 and Xbox 360, you will be prompted to select one set of data. You can only transfer one set of character and progression data for your PlayStation®Network account on PlayStation®4.
  • Once the transfer has completed, you will be prompted to choose a character and enter GTA Online.
Please note:
  • Any existing PlayStation®4 GTA Online character and progression data will be replaced by your previous character and progression data during the transfer, except for any existing in-game money, which will be combined with your transferred balance.
  • All earned in-game money will transfer. Purchased in-game money that has not yet been spent will only transfer within a console family (e.g. PlayStation®3 to PlayStation®4).
  • You will still be able to play with your existing characters on PlayStation®3 and/or Xbox 360, however any progress made with versions of the characters on those systems after a transfer will remain on the those systems only.
  • You can only transfer a set of character and progression data from PlayStation®3 or Xbox 360 once.
For more information on what specifically will and will not be transferred, please click here

Transferring to Xbox One

What you need:

  • A copy of Grand Theft Auto V on Xbox One.
  • Previous Grand Theft Auto Online character and progression data on either Xbox 360 or PlayStation®3.
  • A Rockstar Games Social Club account. If you do not already have a Social Club account, you will need to create one. Click here for info on creating an account.
  • An Xbox Live Gold account.
    • If transferring from Xbox 360, your Social Club account will need to be linked to the Xbox Live account used to play GTA Online on both systems.
    • If transferring from PlayStation®3, your Social Club account will need to be linked to the PlayStation®Network account used while playing GTA Online on PlayStation®3 and the Xbox Live account used to play GTA Online on Xbox One.
    • If you still need to link your Social Club account to your console account(s), please click here for more information.
How to transfer your previous Grand Theft Auto Online character and progression data to Xbox One:
  • Start Grand Theft Auto V on Xbox One and log into Xbox Live.

These are the characters that will be transferred to Xbox One. If you have previous character and progression data on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation®3, you will be prompted to select one set of data. You can only transfer one set of character and progression data for your Xbox Live account on Xbox One.
  • Once the transfer has completed, you will be prompted to choose a character and enter GTA Online.
Please note:
  • Any existing Xbox One GTA Online character and progression data will be replaced by your previous character and progression data during the transfer, except for any existing in-game money, which will be combined with your transferred balance.
  • All earned in-game money will transfer. Purchased in-game money that has not yet been spent will only transfer within a console family (e.g. Xbox 360 to Xbox One).
  • You will still be able to play with your existing characters on Xbox 360 and/or PlayStation®3, however any progress made with versions of the characters on those systems after a transfer will remain on the those systems only.
  • You can only transfer a set of character and progression data from PlayStation®3 or Xbox 360 one once.
For more information on what specifically will and will not be transferred, please click here

How to create a Rockstar Games Social Club account (if you dont already have one):

You can create an account in one of two ways:

  • Within Grand Theft Auto V, if you access any Social Club-enabled feature (e.g. Snapmatic, Crews or Creator), the game will prompt you to log-in or create a Social Club account. Follow the on screen prompts to create your account.
  • You can also create an account by visiting www.rockstargames.com/socialclub
How to link your PlayStation®Network and/or Xbox Live accounts:

In order to transfer your previous GTA Online character and progression data, you will need a Social Club account linked to the PlayStation®Network and/or Xbox Live account(s) used while previously playing Grand Theft Auto Online.

If you previously played GTA Online while logged in to the Social Club, the console account will be linked automatically (e.g. your PlayStation®Network account will automatically be linked to your Social Club account if you log into your Social Club account while playing GTA Online on PlayStation®3).

If you need to link your PlayStation®Network or Xbox Live account to your Social Club account, you can do so logging on to socialclub.rockstargames.com/settings/linkedaccounts.

What will be transferred:

  • Money Earned in-game money will transfer. Purchased in-game money that has not yet been spent will only transfer within a console family (e.g. PlayStation®3 to PlayStation®4).
  • Rank and RP You will have the same Rank and RP after transfer.
  • Game Progress GTA Online progression will transfer including all unlocks, Contacts, Jobs, Trophies and stats.
  • Items and Property Weapons/attachments, vehicles/modifications, properties, clothing and all aspects of character appearance will be transferred. Character-owned items (e.g. clothing, weapons, etc.) will remain in the characters inventory and will not need to be repurchased in-game. Vehicles will appear in the same garage they were left in before the transfer.
  • Creator Jobs made within the Creator will be transferred.
  • Crews Existing Crew information will available.
  • Achievements and Trophies Achievements and trophies will transfer. Additional overall Gamerscore will not be awarded for transferring achievement progress.
What will not be transferred:
  • Purchased in-game money that has not yet been spent will not transfer from across console families (e.g. Xbox 360 to PlayStation®4).
  • Published Job playlists and bookmarked playlists will not be available if transferring across console families (e.g. Xbox 360 to PlayStation®4).
  • Leaderboards, world records and personal bests will not be transferred.
  • Snapmatic photos within the game. All photos will still be accessible via the Social Club website.
Limitations on Transfer:
  • Transferring previous GTA Online data is a special feature of GTAV that may not be available to all users or at all times, and may, upon 30 days notice be terminated, modified, or offered under different terms.
  • Transfers may only be made between accounts owned by the same player and transfers may be rejected, modified, or reversed if the player or transfer violates the transfer requirements, Terms of Service (rockstargames.com/legal) or End User License Agreement (rockstargames.com/eula).

I'll still be playing GTAV on 360 with my son, until he gets an Xbox1.

Let me understand this clearly

If I transfer my character from the 360 to the 1 does it still retain the same character/stats in the 360 version?

Or is this a permanent deal.

Thanks

It's so wack that if you you made a new psn for psn for ps4 you can't transfer your character. So now for people such as myself, got to rebuy psn on old ones just to use ps3 character on ps4. SMH

Don't know if you got your answer or not, but yes, if you transfer your character over from the 360 version, the character is still there on the 360 version. However, anything you do on the 360 version after you transfer to the One will not be transferred to the One.

  • 2 weeks later...

I tried to retrieve my character from the Social Club without success. Not sure what happened but I couldn't sync my PSN account with the Rockstar Social Club, so I decided to create a NEW character. Played and yesterday I was at level 41 with over 1mi on my account balance.

Well... my friend invited me to join his crew and when I logged into the Social Club, it asked me to sign-in. This time I decided to use my PSN account, which was the one I used previously. Done that, I entered the website and accepted my friend's invitation for his crew.

Today I turned on my PS4 and suddenly, my level 40 rich character is gone. Only the crappy level10 poor dude from my PS3 appears to play. Why is that?

I transferred my 360 character to the One using my old account, but I want to be using the new one I made. Is it possible to go to the social club, unlink it from my old account, then link it to my new one I want to use? Is that possible?

So what they're saying is that they can take the possibility away to transfer your character? That kinda concerns me because i can't afford a newgen console right now.. Let's say i buy an new console in april do you think i can still transfer my ps3 character? Im a lvl 290 and would like to continue on newer system

Just a theory here but a new console for me isn't going to happen for at least 2/3 months, but a friend of mine already has a ps4 so lets say that i put my account on his console en then transfer my character.. That way i can continue playing on my ps3 and my newgen character would be there sitting waiting for me. Then when i have my own ps4 i log in with my psn id and then the character would there? Anybody think that can work? That way i dont have to worrie about not being able to transfer my character as its been done already and all i have to do is sign in on psn

Ok, I want to start over with a new character.

I've got a level 74 in GTAO PS3. Transferred the character successfully to PS4.

I have no intention of jointing playstation plus.

How do I create a new online character? No I have to uninstall? I don't mind starting over.

Just go to Chose Character and pick the empty slot and make a new Character but you won't be able to play online without PS+

So let me get this right: to play online with PS4 I have to pay $x a month? And with the PS3 I don't have to?

Anyone else see this as wrong?

Where is the choose character? Start menu? Before the game loads?

Correct and correct.

Nothing wrong about that honestly.. but I'm just speaking from my point of view.

Choose character is in the start menu > Online and it should be on the bottom (if my memory is correct)

Some people pay month to month but it's actually cheaper to buy a full year @ $50 instead of spending $9.99 a month or $17.99 every 3 month which comes out to $119 & $71.00 so if you do buy PS+ make sure to buy a full year and not monthly or tri-monthly

So I'll still be able to use that character in Online (PS3)! Sweet! I'm ok with the progress on PS4 being separate! YES! YES! YES!

Anyone think It's possible to have R* reset a previous character transfer? Sort of a re-do on the whole transfer?

I highly doubt that they will allow you to redo transferring a previous character because R* states that transferring characters between consoles is a one time deal and if they were to allow one person to redo the character transfer process, that means that they would have to allow everyone to redo the process just because of one other person and I doubt R* wants to go through that.

Yes, as soon as they transfer you'll be put into the customization screen before being thrown into the streets of San Andreas.

The original character will be left with nothing in its bank account? Or everything remains in the same way as before? I will still play with the old char, so I will need money there.
