Biggest sporting upsets

What are your biggest upsets in sports, be they doping scandals or a your favorite team loosing to a rival?

My number one was the Lance Armstrong scandal. No others.... Armstrong was looked upto by so many until he admitted that he cheated

I met Armstong back when he was racing he was a nice person very down to earth we grabbed some lunch and spent a day in Denver just hanging out, he did great things for charity though you can not deny that

That would be The state up north losing to Appalachian State a few years ago. Still great ammo against their fans, but hey, they beat them this year so the are 50-50 with D2 schools.

The Wembley goal

Definitely!

It's bitter, sure, but it's long ago and I haven't witnessed it since I wasn't alive back in '66, so it doesn't really arouse emotions. My biggest sporting upsets were every time when we lost a final or semi final at the WCs and ECs in the last decade.

the Lance Armstrong scandal.

I hate to burst your entire thread, but that's not an upset.

an upset is when a team or player loses a game or match that no one expected them to lose.

it has nothing to do with scandals or corruption.

BlackAce already said it, but I still think that one of my favorite upsets is the Giants beating the Patriots during New England's undefeated season. they lost the only game that matters so it's essentially the biggest choke of all time.

In descending order:

WC Semifinal 1990

WC Final 1994

EC Final 2000

Champions Cup/League finals of 1983, 1997, 1998 and 2003

Lots of pain... But I recovered completely in 2006. :)

That's 4 championships and 4 defeats ago. If I was you, I would feel the pain again. I've recovered in last summer. I just hope the pain won't come back in 2016 in France. But I expect it will.

But you see defeats are really painful when you are so close to win and you lose even though you have a great team.

In 2008 EC we went out in QF at penalties but it was no big deal really.

The 2010 WC and 2014 WC eliminations in group stage were indeed disappointing but the teams were sh*t and nobody really expected to go anywhere.

But as painful as a lost WC final or semifinal? No way.

2012 was a bit painful but in the end we never thought we'd be in that final.

And the rage against Prandelli basically cured the pain. :D

I won 2 WC in my lifetime. 1 as a kid and 1 as an adult. Celebrated both extensively.

I'd like to win a EC but I'm ok with what I got so far.

It's a lot more than a lot of supporters could ever dream of.

My club team won everything it could win during my lifetime.

In that department I'm also satisfied.

Of course you always want to win more but with time you learn to cherish what you already won. ;)

In this defintion of upset - david Moyes entire time at Manchester united

in the traditional definition as Diablo said I would say the last 2 minutes of the CL final in 1999 or the 4-0 defeat of manchester united to MK Dons, i follow other sports but can't think of anything more shocking than those 2 things to have happened off the top of my head,

The scandal of Olympique Marseille back in 1993 when they bought both French Ligue 1 title and Champions League.

They had to give back the French title but no other team got it, while Paris S.G was 2nd. Marseille was allowed to keep the Champions League but was banned for the next season so Paris could take their place.

The scandal in Italy was also terrible. I think it's back again, this Juventus win some matches who clearly are fixed. Referees do everything to let teams as Napoli, Roma (although I hate them) and Lazio lose.

It's not in.

England got f*ck a few years ago against Germany when, I think Lampard's goals, wasn't given while it cleary was OVER the line. That the refs didn't see that is probally because they got paid to let Germany win. Even the Germans saw it was a goal.

If you class Formula 1 as a sport, then Juels Bianchi's death and Senna's death were upsetting. Sir Alex Ferguson leaving Manchester United sucked too.
