Dingdongs
Yeah but if you commit a crime or are involved with illegal activity in any way with one of those tracphones the government will find who you are by looking at where the phone was purchased. Not too difficult . Cash. But it really won't matter anyways when the drone business/Google Earth or whatever other technology it'll be called really advances and starts a-booming and everybody starts spying on/recording eachothers movements and everything they say. Mark my words. This electronic tapping is insgnificantly small to the extent of what I think is coming a hundred or so years down the road. sure, but they can find the store the phone was bought from and look at the surveillance cameras to see who purchased it. The Harwood Bitcher
sivis, she or he or whatever it is was just being sarcastic with you. You just wasted two paragraphs on somebody who is one of the most pathetic of trolls around this place. The usual routine always starts with..."Can you tell us more about...". Just a heads up, bud. the admiral is not a pathetic troll, it's the most sucessful troll in this fields. that last sentence is an oxymoron, i know
Gay Tony
sure, but they can find the store the phone was bought from and look at the surveillance cameras to see who purchased it. For idiots maybe. Not for real criminals who are deadset on commiting a crime. Sunglasses, hair dye, all kinds of disguises of all sorts. If I were going to commit a crime with one of those phones I'd drive 4 or 5 hours away, probably much more to purchase one. Then wait a while to do the deed. Unless you are a highly trained foreign intelligence operative, in which case you probably aren't buying burn phones from 7/11 in the first place. Doc Rikowski
@Doc - Yeah, they've got those little cheap disposable cell phones for sale at places like 7-Eleven. I used to have one. It was "pay as you go" and it was a pain in the ass. Why a pain in the ass? How does it work? I use a phone that I can "charge" with as much money as I want for calls and messages. It's no different from putting gas in your car once in a while. The thing was that every call you made or text you shot out, you had to pay like a dollar or something. Then, once all your money is up, you have to run down to the store and get another cash card for it to work. I think it was more expensive to get/send text messages as opposed to calling, so whenever I got a text message from someone, I would actually call them and say "Don't text me anymore because you're taking money from me. What do you need". Comparing that way to the current way I have, unlimited talk/text for a flat fee each month, I definitely prefer the latter. I see. I pay 4 cents x minute for each call and 4 for each sms I send (no charge for received sms or calls). So basically 10€ can easily last you for 3 weeks. It's Vodafone. The other phone I basically unlimited free calls and messages. The cable TV /internet provider gave it to me. I guess they thought I'd spend the real money by going online with the phone but they were wrong, I use a 15€ not smart phone. Anyway my point about the topic was that if you are not a criminal but you still want to be an anonymous mobile phone user you still can. --- @ Irviding: if it was that easy to be caught we'd have criminals not using mobile phones at all. Instead we have thousands of affiliated to criminal organisations using them on a daily basis to commit serious crimes and still they do not get caught as easy as you picture it. And I don't see any difficulty in buying a phone in a 7/11 or have someone buying it for you. Now disregard my answer if you meant that a normal citizen committing a serious crime would be easily caught. In that case I agree. Anyone not used to act "in the shadow" would be caught. Just the basic ability to text and make/receive calls. But yeah, even though I value my privacy and stuff, you shouldn't be afraid of anything so long as you aren't talking about criminal stuff whilst on the phone. Bring back messenger pigeons! trip
I wasn't sure which NSA thread to bump with this so... Caller ID from my house phone a couple of minutes ago. They've been calling for the past three days. Today I was here when it rang - I picked it up - dead silence for well over a minute then eventually a dial tone. Sure that might not sound too strange but yesterday my [house] phone said there was voicemail. One of the voice mail said "remotely deleted" when going to listen to it. Weird... When I said "serious" crimes, I was referring to crimes that are the topic of the debate about monitoring terrorist communication. So espionage, terrorist activities, these things you are not likely to get away with. Even espionage gets caught at some point but is dealt with under the table. If a terrorist blows up a building or kills a bunch of people, he really isn't going to get away. Look at the case in Paris, these guys were all caught within a week due to the amount of resources expended on it. YOu're right that most crimes go unsolved, though. I should've worded it better.
