Is being this active with blocking leaks really necessary for a port?

I was wondering this earlier, i'd wager that over 50% of the people who are buying this game have seen everything the game has to offer already, and the ones who are watching the leaks i'd certainly wager have already played the game. So why be this protective over just a fresh coat of paint and a new viewing angle?

Rockstar are treating this as if its the first time the game has ever been shown to the public, it is as if they forgot we have played the $hi* out of this for the past year. The game is out in a couple of days, is it really that big of a deal now that people are streaming the game a couple days early?

I suppose this is a grey area for discussion, but what do you think?

Even though i agree with you, i might also have an explanation for this behavior! Well...the thing is that leaking is considering as an illegal act, almost similar to pirating (just not to the same extent...but it has the same background), its not because of spoilers, its because developers are afraid that by leaking stuff people, who watch it would be revealed with actual in game footage, so it gets kinda hard to fool customer that way when he actually goes and buys final product! Leaks usually reveals more than you "should" see, thus it counts as illegal and is taken down accordingly as such!

Pretty much this...I'm sure R* are less worried in the sense that its nothing new really (not like it was last year) but I would still be doing everything in my power to stop it because it has a release date and f*ck the people who are pissing all over that fact. Its kind of a big f*ck you to R*. No? I'm thinking from R* point of view...I don't really care either way about the leaks. Edited by malcolmfunktion

And that's a nice explanation but totally not how it works or the reason why. It's just an industry practice developed over time between publishers, journalists and retailers. There's no laws enforcing that, just NDA's (at best). Early access and exclusives in return for editorial control, simple as that.

If you want to be editorially independent and show and discuss things we don't want you to discuss, that's totally fine but you can go ahead an queue up with the rest of the plebs. No review copy weeks in advance for you and no all expenses paid trips to Paris to play assassin's creed on top of the notre dame and cheap hookers at the hotel.

And so, everybody that doesn't want to sing the tune the publisher wants them sing gets left out of the loop.

Everything in the entertainment industry works like that. Mutual access. Step out of line and the entire industry will sh*t you out like a bad doner kebab.

You're naive if you expect your favourite game developer to be immune to all of that. You either play ball or you don't...

I've seen quite a lot of new features through leaks already. Only minor things but changes nonetheless - more than just enhanced graphics and the viewing angle. Rockstar want to keep these a surprise for when we play the game.

From what ive witnessed, its just a port with a new coat of gloss. There has been nothing leaked that shows anything new. I can see why they would want people not to leak but at the same time if we dont hold them to some sort of standard then pretty soon the games will be worthless to play. Im still waiting on a good enough reason to go out and buy a PS4...Ill watch leaks because I know watching gameplay is all i will be doing until a game changer comes around. Sure First Person looks great and all but is it enough for my money? Not yet. Not without a bunch of stuff I expected from the last gens version.

They want us to think it's something super special :p

Plus, it could be, that a company or copyright holder has to actively defend their IP, so that if they want to take actual legal action later, they can show that they did not let a bunch of stuff slide earlier and only selectively choose to go after certain infringers.
