As we come to the release of the next gen version, I have a question. The game has been out for a year on last gen and these consoles are quite old now. Each week, many more people buy either and Xbox One, PS4 or PC to replace their 360/PS3's. My question is will R* ever drop support for last gen on their servers and use those servers for current gen and if so, when?

One day the servers from last gen will be shutten-off, but I believe that will take a lot of time.
IV servers are still up(I guess, it's been like 3 months since I've played it for the last time)...

Doesn't GTA 4 still have a multiplayer? And if that isn't shut down why would it be shut down on the PS3 version of GTA 5?

IV came out in 2008/9 to some and their servers are still running.

ah seriously, all those topics....

already days people seem to come of with realy stupid things that are likely not gonna happen on next gen or that just arent gonna happen on next gen

and then also topics like this talking about a realy distant future :)

and this is probably gonna be the case for an other 3 days...pfffff :/

also after that i predict more bitch and moan topics and even more sugestive stuff....

Op must be trolling, the Last Gen consoles didn't have an online connection did they?

 

Current gen consoles still have like 125 million active accounts, while next gen accounts just went over 20 million. Ask the question again in a couple of years when the next gen consoles are approaching mainstream...

They won't kill for a couple of years after the last PAID DLC expansion comes out if it does on the PS4/XB1 But its up to them.

 

They all use the same cloud servers for game data with a Barebones matchmaking lobby. So it doesn't take that many resources to keep it running.

With IV the servers they used to use Gamespy i believe and they patched to run it on their own.

I'll be really sad, since I'll lose my 540 hours of progress, my 30+mil of accumulated materials and all that.. But every online game has an end somewhere, it just depends how long the developer intends to hold the torch.

The only thing that could keep this game up forever would be private servers hosted by fans like you or me. It's a guarantee that Rockstar themselves will not host the game forever.

 

Even World of Warcraft will end one day. It will be especially sad for them as some have sunk thousands upon thousands of hours into that game.

You need to be asking about when Microsoft and Sony will stop supporting current gen in favour of next gen. That'll be a big factor along with player numbers on each platform. However, there is plently of life left in the 360 and PS3, but Rockstar like to tell us about mythical console limitations so they can seel GTA V again.

not all of us can afford a next gen console, if they did shut down the current gen servers, the r* forums and tech support & this forum would be flooded with complaints.

to the people who haven't upgraded yeah it is. To everyone else in the world, ps4 and Xbone are current gen.

 

we're in the middle of the "next" gen of gaming. That would make it current. Companies advertise ps4 and Xbone as next as a selling point. It's new it's hip it's cool you want it f*ck YOU!

Actually you may want to do some research on Gamespy giving server support for IV and Read Dead but have now been closed down. They're still running but some stat features have been lost.

 

 

OT: Bit early don't you think OP? I would say this time next year people will move on
