Let's discuss GTA V's awful fighting mechanics.

These fighting mechanics are a major downgrade and are very dumbed down and awful compared to other R* games.



First of all, instead of getting knock outs or people backing off or getting injured, they now get killed.

Second of all, running up on a person and attacking your guy glitches to glide over to them, and throws a big wild right hook and kills them in that one shot pretty much no matter who it is.

Third of all, the AI has no fighting ability anymore look at the video they stand flat footed in one spot with their hands down not trying to block or use any footwork, not trying to throw a jab, but just trying to swing a big slow right hook. Even the gangbangers at Davis seem to have no actual fighting knowledge.

Fourth of all, it seems like the R* developers forgot about the jab at all, even your character pretty much just throws with his right hand and the punches are so slow in the game.

Fifth of all, the physics when you knock people out is silly as people go flying in unrealistic cartoony ways.




Now I know what you are saying, it's Grand Theft Auto it's not a fighting game and this is a game that focuses on gun combat.


But why would R* make the fighting worse and downgrade it and make it more cartooney when RDR and GTA IV and GTA VCS and The Warriors all had much better fighting in the game?



Now compare it to this.




Now the fighting isn't exactly good in that game and it still has a lot of issues.

But notice that, the AI actually blocks punches, the AI can actually knock your guy down, the AI can actually take punches, the AI swings widly but throws some hooks and upper cuts and decent speed, that you can take a guy down and throw punches on top of him on the ground. That you can push and shove those are all things that got taken out of GTA V pretty much.


Next compare it to this.




Look they actually throw straight punches, Niko and the guy other guy actually jab, they throw crosses, they throw hooks and uppercuts, you can push and shove,the AI can push and shove, you can run and bump into people.

In GTA IV you can run up on someone and push them down using the physics this was important because it meant you could run up and push someone into an alley and mug them without people seeing so you wouldn't get wanted by the cops, you could run up on a cop from behind and push him and kick him and take his weapon and not get wanted.

Also best of all people would get knocked out, and would eventually get back up where as in GTA V they just get killed and don't get back up.


Next compare this.


Look at how they had clinching and grappling in the fighting.



So why would the money and time put into development and already having better fighting systems in previous games, why did R* take a step back and dumb down the fighting system in GTA V? Why didn't they work with what they had, and make it so the physics on punches landed was better, make it so the AI was smarter and would side step and create angles and punch faster and be tougher in a fight, why didn't they make it so the AI could tackle or take you down, why didn't they add in more grappling and clinch work?


Was it because if they would have made the fighting to complicated or hard or challenging it wouldn't be as "fun" for the kids who play the game and need their hand held compared to one hit kills and enemy AI who stands still and doesn't block and only throws a slow right hook? Where no clinching goes on? Where pushing and shoving hardly happens?

 

 

If that's the case you are part of the problem as to why R* dumbed this game down in so many ways.

No, it would have been nice if R* would have built off what they had for GTA IV.

 

Fix the physics and collision detection.

 

Add in the take downs and grappling and clinching.

 

Make the AI side step punches or step backwards on punches to avoid getting hit.

 

Make some AI characters be good fighters who would be able to step or slip most of your shots and could counter punch and punched fast.

 

Make AI characters throw jabs and teeps more.

 

Keep the pushing and shoving mechanic.

 

 

All of those things are possible to do yet instead R* decided to make it so the AI stands still with it's hands down and throws a slow right hook like they have never been or seen a fight in their whole life before.

I must admit that melee combat was better in IV. The physics were just better. And people didn't die from one punch. I hope that is fixed in next gen. You actually killed a lot less people in IV than you thought because often they were only injured.

If anything it's you R* fanboys who are crying on the forum the most, trying to get me banned or threads deleted that point out flaws in the game.

 

I already paid the money to buy this game again a while ago, I'm just pointing out obvious flaws with the game.

 

Unless you think that it's cool that gang members in the hood stand still with their hands down not trying to block not trying to move and only throw one punch, and think that's a good fighting game mechanic?

Let's take a look at this video.



He one hit kills not KO but kills a man by slapping his face.

When enemies come into to fight they don't square up with hands up in the pocket or any sort of guard they keep their hands low.

At 20 seconds he only throws the right hand, yet the AI is so dumb they can't even block or move out of the way of slow punches from the same hand. Why can't the AI step away from those punches and counter back? Why can't he atleast block them?

Next guy he fights the AI only throws the right hand... why can't he use the left to throw a combination?


Did R* forget that most people throw punches with the lead hand because it's faster? Where is the jabbing? This looks nothing like an actual fight.


Notice how in GTA IV when you got in the pocket and squared up people actually took a proper stance and guard?

Looks like good physics and animation on that right hand.

Someone please tell me how having AI that fights by having no guard and not holding it's hands up, not using it's left hand, not moving, stepping, or slipping punches and has 0 fighting IQ is in anyway fun?

I would have take IV's combat over V's anytime. In IV you could actually believe you were fighting. No one would be stupid enough to punch the same way they do in V.

All I could see in this thread was a bunch of tears. If you want to spend your days punching people out, go play Fight Night, Tekken, Street Fighter etc.

 

You'll find that those games are more suited towards your "taste".

All I can say is that I liked the counter animations more in IV. Other than that, I feel we now have a superior melee system.

Yeah but it's just another elephant in the room that people don't want to discuss on here. Look at the typical fanboys who are trying to convince themselves that the lack of traffic is any good are the sameones trying to convince themselves that AI that doesn't know how to block or have any sort of defense is a good fighting system.

All I could see in this thread was a bunch of tears. If you want to spend your days punching people out, go play Fight Night, Tekken, Street Fighter etc.

 

You'll find that those games are more suited towards your "taste".

Well I can't free roam or play a crime game or explore a city in those games can I?

 

I mean GTA is a crime game right, and violent criminals tend to get into fights, and GTA has had fighting in it since the start... so why downgrade the fighting in it?

You may want to actually read the thread before you claim that all you can see is tears. Though I generally disagree with his conclusion, the OP brings up some good points with supporting evidence. Meanwhile, you hop in here out of nowhere, add nothing constructive to this conversation, and then build a poor defense for the game by suggesting the issue at hand be ignored and those upset by it should just play something else.

 

Next time put more thought into your posts.

Agree with you OP.

 

This was one of the most dissapointing things for me in V. The melee is pretty shallow and people die so quickly.

 

Iv fighting was clumsy but had more variety and feel to it whereas in V the fighting feels smooth but theres not in depth system. Should have been like rdr at least.

 

Even the melee weapons suck, they all feel the same and theres no flamethrower or anything cool.

 

Thats one of the reasons why I'll get the pc version after ps4.

 

Melee fighting mods plus max payne 3 shooting and less arcadeish driving will make this the perfect game.

Yo just give it to him, it's no debate that the fighting being set to baby bitch mode was a horrible fail in v. That rdr fighting honestly could have just been copy pasted. It's done and too late. (Wait for PC and mods I guess)

I really do wish the game had better melee fighting mechanics. I hated GTA IV's (everybody flopped over like fish if you even nudged them or got nudged) and never liked the button mashing style of games before that. Hopefully it's been reworked in the next-gen version.

Well our protagonist arent exactly brruce lee. Regardless they should have just kept the fighting from 4 and upgraded it.

Yeah i found this disappointing also. I mean R* went to the effort making 3 different protags and unique animations for the way the characters walk but then left the melee combat identical for all 3.
