he pretty much been the head writer/creative guy since GTA 3, would you like to see him pass the torch and have some new writers spice up the world of GTA? i mean although he has had co-writers..he has pretty much been the main creative force..

Providing he's not on something like the way he wrote GTA V, yes.

If it was written properly and not a repeat of V's underwhelming (in my opinion) story, then I would have few problems. Having said that, I would like some fresh writers in for the next game.

Cheers.

GTA V's story was a real piece of garbage, but he also wrote all the past games since 3. So unless he just bombs multiple games in a row he should stay the head writer. Now if GTA 6 and other future Rockstar projects have stories that are complete hot garbage, he should consider stepping down as lead writer.

I am willing to give him a chance, as everybody can have a worse day. I will be fully sure after seeing next game if the fire he got was extinguished or does he still got it.

I really really hope the Housers are thinking "holy sh*t what did we do wrong" after reading about how flawed the story in V was and how flawed online is. Thus, they get all the people who helped them with III and Vice City to being GTA to its roots. The efforts are then adapted into a broadway musical, followed by a film. Tom Hanks plays Dan Houser and Jesse Ventura plays Sam Houser.

In short - most likely.

We don't really know in what degree was Dan Houser involved in the writing process. He's pretty much always been listed as one of two/three writers in R* titles, but there's much larger writing staff responsible for creating the story. That being said, I don't care if he is listed as one of the main writers as I believe his actual role is maybe writing general draft of the story / making some decisions about what directions should writing staff take. He's probably going to be listed as one of the main writers in future R* games like Agent, GTA VI and whoever knows what else, and it doesn't mean that much really. I just hope that GTA V was an exception and the next games will have high quality writing again.

PS: Worth noting is the fact, that Dan Houser and Rupert Humphries are listed as two writers responsible for both GTA IV and GTA V. These games are very different from each other and I I think it's unlikely that Dan and Rupert were involved in the actual writing process.

The new GTA should be written in GTA San Andreas style because GTA SA has an actual character evolution, not like V that the main protagonist stops evolving after moving to a mansion to eat chips/iron clothes all the day.

I hope they don't bring back the Death Sentence or you guys would kill everyone. I think you have to remember DH has been writing since GTA III. So GTA V wasn't up to your standards now you're talking about getting rid of him as head writer? You think the GTA V story was THAT bad? Personally I don't think a lot is wrong with V's story. It's far from the best but it's definitely not the worst. Everyone should seriously take a breather.

be honest... the whole GTA V story felt like it was really all about the Michale character

Trevor and Franklin? just a cheap cop out

I believe in Dan just improve the rest of the staff. I'm sure there are a lot of good writers out there to help out and add multiple story arcs. They should hire some of the people that used to write for The Sopranos and The Wire. Since those shows have been off the air for a while I'm sure it might be easy to get a few people.

As many workers actually fear Houser and feel like slaves for him, I would say no...

But he is fine at writing at least, so, I voted yes.

David Simon could never write for GTA. Just not his style.

Dont know anything about V story, but IV sucked. It repeated all the time. Go somewhere, pick up / shoot someone, done. That's actually the whole storyline. No differences at all. So I was really bored when unlocking the third island.

Anyway V had MUCH potential for a huge story. They could have put in the Mexican border and that would have brought the cartels etc. which has never really been in any GTA (besides Diaz in Vice City). However, maybe they are saving that topic for a remake of VC.

So in fact, I dont like the story of III and IV, but VC and SA were really nice. Maybe V as well. Dont know yet.

Yes because apparently he's amazing.

People are very quick to write off the writers as well as the whole GTA series or even R* as a whole after V didn't live up to the absolutely unrealistic expectations. Now, I agree that V was not as good as I hoped but that's basically because the previous games have raised the bar so ridiculously high. And even with all the flaws GTA V still is one of the best games out there.

Also, after playing and replaying some of the GTA games lately, I looked up some interviews with Houser. This one is quite revealing:

LA is this embodiment of 20th-century American desires: the houses, the gardens, the tans, all slightly fake. It's the end of the western world – the suns sets and then it's tomorrow. But the industry is movies or, equally phoney, real estate. It's people trying to escape their pasts and reinvent themselves. If GTA IV was a classic New York story, this is the endpoint of the American dream.

That's a quote from Houser which tells me that the somewhat artificial feel of GTA V was actually deliberate.

I don't think they communicated it as well as they wanted, but note how the previous games tended to match the setting, story, atmosphere and mechanics in a very coherent fashion (i.e. Vice City - colorful, outlandish, arcade; IV - dark, moody and complex in all aspects) and V just continues this trend.

So yea, the people of LA are supposed to be shallow, therefore the city of Los Santos also feels shallow and empty and so does the story. In this sense I see and appreciate what they did there. It's just another parody of the American lifestyle from another angle that popped up in all aspects of the game.

What they'll do in VI is anyone's guess. I'd expect to be something completely different yet. No 2 GTA games have been the same for some time. They still have a lot of stuff to tap into.

You really should learn the difference between narrative and mission play.

Do you know who I'd like to come in as a supporting writer? Sam Lake.

Say what you will, but story-wise? Anything he's ever written has pulled me in and anybody else. Max Payne, Alan Wake etc, etc. It'd bring a fresh perspective to the whole story really. Besides that, Kane and Lynch, although lacking with game mechanics. (Hey, I still play both of them occasionally--the writing, dialogue, characters are f*cking brilliant.)

Maybe getting Jens Kurup and Oliver Winding, and even Michael Madsen on GTA VI would give us something new. I'd love to see something from them, sort of like a hybrid mix of Kane and Lynch characters with a bigger plot-revolving storyline a la Sam Lake.

It'd be some good sh*t, I tell you--of course with Houser overlooking anything just so he's not being underwhelmed with plot/characterization.

"I might have laughed if I'd have remembered how."
