Bloody Mary
One of the mentioned features of the next-gen versions is "improved damage effects". Does this mean, on PC and other platforms, that we'll also get better vehicle damage indications? Like, GTA IV-style broken doors, hoods, and all that good stuff? It did irk me that in the previous-gen versions of GTA V the cars didn't really seem to show much physical change when they got damaged. PhoGarrett
There's going to be a mod for that, I guaran-damn-tee it. bravemanray7
ItsJustMeSrsly
If you watched those popular stream, that made so much fuss then you should know that damage has been improved, but to a limited extent! Its something between GTAIV level GTAV vanilla level! You basically get your vehicle visually deformed faster! The moment you hit an obstacle it immediately changes how your vehicle looks, compare to only few scratches here and there from vanilla version! Choteron
I want Max payne bullet hole damage but that will not happen. For sure will be a mod.

The moment you hit an obstacle it immediately changes how your vehicle looks, compare to only few scratches here and there from vanilla version! So the models are simply more responsive to damage? Fair enough. To be honest though, I was more hoping for something along the lines of the soft-body physics of Beam NG and Wreckfest, but I guess that's asking a bit much. True, there might be 'more' impact effect proportional to collision force, but how the vehicles respond to specific collision circumstances is also important, so as a real-life example, I would expect hitting a pole (assuming it doesn't detach) head-on at a high speed would cause the front of a car to compress inward and form a rough V-shape centered at the place the pole hits. Soft-body physics, of course, does a great job of simulating random and very specific events like this because it's physically consistent (and supposedly, it's also more hardware-demanding, which is why I'd think this would have been a "special gift" for NG/PC users), as opposed to the majority of games without it (like every 3D GTA title) that use the older scripted system of ascribing collision effects based merely on a collision's general location, usually without going into more detail after that point. To be honest with you i liked how damage were handled in 3d era GTA games (from GTA3 to San Andreas and the "Stories"...), it wasn't too much excessive, but made a lot of sense! It gave you this feeling of an impact everytime you hit something with vehicle you drive! Sure graphically and animation-wise it wasn't so impressive (guess this is just as much you could squeeze from so resource limited hardware!), but it was still good regardless! Yes there were no realistic behavior, no broken glass at all and other stuff, that might ruin immersion for someone, but when it comes to an "impact" force, it sure delivered! I liked hitting other vehicles with my own in old GTA games at high speeds, it felt satisfying! (What i can't tell about at least vanilla GTAV...)...Don't know how it was in GTAIV, never really played it, because was disappointed too much with to bother buying! (I just hate how the game was dumbed down, because of the "realism" excuse!...a lot of fun content was cut...and it sure helped to make game quite boring!...)...But thats just my opinion... Bloody Mary
GTA IV probably had the best damage system of the series. Minor hits didn't deform it much at all (unlike San Andreas where even tapping into things would totally smash your front bumper), but big hits will f*ck your car up, and even compress it. Saints Row 2-4 also have good vehicle damage modelling. Something like a mix of all this together would work best IMO. Hitting something with your vehicle and expecting front bumper to fall off is a common sense! No matter how much you like it or not!

PhillBellic
I hope they have been upgraded. It would be a simple correction really. In IV you could alter the vehicle damage by tweaking the relevant entries in the 'handling.dat' file. Cheers.
Le zébu suintant
I saw a live, and i can say that there is no big amelioration about the damage of the cars.

Except your front bumper got damaged when you got hit from behind, instead of the rear bumper... But yeah today's damage method is sad. Game is extremely reluctant to even let the hood fall off of a car. I miss the front quarter panels falling off like in 3 and VC. jdwarfer
I loved the GTA IV damage system. Maybe not realistic but fun. A big hit deformed the car and eventually ruined the engine. Not speaking about the driver being ejected through the windshield. Priceless.
DentureDynamite
Frankly, I don't see any evidence at all for upgraded damage effects in the next-gen version. Trees and telephone poles (not lamp posts) still cannot be damaged, and other than breaking doors off (already exists in PS3 version) vehicles just turn into a one-piece burning hull like they always have in GTAV. Evan-KCR
I see it quite well. There is more debris falling in the ground. Also there are more sparkles. And I saw a video were you could see cars get damaged easier. And of course the scratches on the cars have been improved. Blood textures as well. DentureDynamite
Sounds like it's more subtle then--I was hoping for even marginal damage to trees and telephone poles; i.e. damage that has practical value to gameplay--not just "eye candy". It's possible too that R* just hasn't had the time to take full advantage of all the hardware capabilities the next-gen and PC platforms offer in this regard--my hope anyway--it would be great to see a whole lot more improved and added yet. raburs
There's going to be a mod for that, I guaran-damn-tee it. no need for a mod.......... pc will have better damage effects keeping GTAIVPC in mind! I loved the GTA IV damage system. Maybe not realistic but fun. A big hit deformed the car and eventually ruined the engine. Not speaking about the driver being ejected through the windshield. Priceless. not realistic? smash ur car into a truck... few scratches only.right? sounds realistic? GTAIV's damage system was very realistic acc. to me. GTAV's damage system is still not gud enough for me... maybe even a downgrade from GTAIV if i must say!
