If we apply those same percentage declines to GTA V, next-gen sales will probably peak at around 8 million

 

Now that's just a guess from the author, quite honestly I think GTA V/Online is going to move more product than that.

 

But let's just keep it at the author's conservative estimate...how many of those 8 million copies will translate into new console sales?

 

I wonder what that will mean for the us as consumers...as you know Sony and Microsoft will go after more exclusives from Rockstar/TakeTwo to push console sales.

I expect a huge season for both the new consoles over the next two months. Gta will def help but it looks like a really good xmas season for new games and thats whats been holding most people from upgrading. With all these new titles, the recent xbox price reduc and all these new bundles we are hearing about im betting the ps4 and xbone will have huge numbers.

 

And gta will have a much better success ratio as compared to those games, with online play being such a huge component those games are much more SP oriented than what gta has become.

Honestly I can see a big boost in sales for both but with Playstation leading. And if Sony did a GTA 5 bundle on PS3 I'm sure they'd do it on current gen.

Well they will release a PC version to, that might add another 5 sales and 10 million+ downloads soon after.

 

But on-topic, i know here and there there are a lot of GTA fans, but i'm also pretty sure a sh*tload of them are not going to buy a new console for this griefing fest of a game.

Well, I don't know if you'd count me since I was going to buy a PS4 eventually anyway... but once Rockstar announced details of the upgrades to GTA V for new consoles, I pretty much went out and bought one the following day.

Yeah, I think GTA is just one of those games some of us feel compelled to play. It would eat away at me knowing there is a better version out there, so, I had to upgrade. I almost bought a Wii U because there are more games on Nintendo's system than the PS4 that I'd like to play at the moment. But the Wii U doesn't have GTA so I got a PS4. No regrets, can't wait til Monday night.

Because for some people that may be unacceptable (for a variety of reasons).

 

I know that if I'm dropping $300~500 on a new console, a handful of games and have to pay $X (can't find prices) each month I want to play online, I might think it over if I could instead get a better computer and not have to pay extra just to play online. At least a new PC could do other stuff I find useful, such as for work-related stuff, Internet stuff that doesn't handle well on a console (e-mail or have they figured that out?) or have the ability to upgrade it piecemeal as better components become cheaper or available (instead of just the hard drive).

 

To be honest, I was all set to get a PS4 this upcoming Winter, but once I learned that online play requires monthly payments, I set about looking at a new computer...

 

As for the topic at hand, another thought is that this only covers GTA:V and doesn't seem to bring in the Online portion of the game. Assuming the developers do want to keep Online interesting and alive for several years, I could see them bringing out huge updates (like new cities) every year or so in order to entice more people to play. As for what that might do to sales, well, I'm not economics expert but I would hazard a guess that GTA:V might reach somewhere along the lines of 10 million on next gen consoles, assuming the next title installment isn't a year or two away or they develop an Online-only version that screws with the statistics.

 

Though, if they really want to look at comparisons, I would think that comparing the sales of next-gen GTA:V over the first few days of release to the original release and the projecting outwards would be a better approximation.

Hey if you want to save money on PS plus I recommend you find a cheaper PS4 on Amazon or trade it in and save $125 or find a cheap $50 card (if that's possible)

Got PS3 bundle for GTA V (first time I owned a last generation console) and have separately purchased a PS4 and pre-ordered GTA V for PS4. So Yes, have already moved product for Sony...

 

Interestingly enough given the comparison games you mentioned, the only game I have for PS4 right now is Tomb Raider Definitive Edition and I will eventually get The Last of Us Remastered on PS4, having had neither on PS3.

another reason i went with xb1. My xbl subscription is good until april and i can usually find a 1 year card on buy.com or ebay or amazon for <$40. And i kept my 360 so i can play other games as well so it's nice having the same account cover 2 systems. I traded in my ps3 which was mainly used as a BR player.
