can anyone give me any info on the PlaystationMove system. I have 2 kids and just was just after abit more info before I buy. They sell a start up pack here for around 80 bucks, it has one controller,1 camera and 1 start up disc. However I have priced up 2 controllers and a camera 2nd hand for about the same. Do many of you have a Move and what are the games like? are the shooters pretty good( I have noticed a few guns that the move controller fits into). And there are quite a few sports games. oh and there are two types of controllers, are the ones with the big light on the end for playing and the shorter one with the stick and buttons for navigating screens? any replies would be appreciated.

You can pick this game up for near to nothing now as well smile.gif

For me I still prefer the standard controller although Heavy Rain is quite enjoyable using the PS move.

I was wondering is it worth buying a very early PS3 model? My brothers friend is selling his and it's from 06 or 07 I believe. How are these for reliability and what price would you offer for the console plus two controllers. I feel like picking one up so I can play BluRays and play with friends who don't have an Xbox.

which model is it? im guessing it's a fat one, but what size is the hardrive?

in terms of reliability, it really comes down to how much it's been used and if it's been well loooked after. if its been left on for days on end and shoved in a tight shelf with no room to breath or has generally been mishandled ie moving it while its playing games, then you might not get a long life out of it, so examine it first before you buy it. if your friend looked after itthen ypu should be ok, esp if you only plan on using it for blu rays.

Price with two controllers?, again are they in good nick? are the thumbsticks loose or not linging up, do any buttons stick?

If the console and controllers are in good to decent condition, then I guess around 150/160 euro, bad nick i'd go maybe just over 100 euro.

Hey everyone,

I don't frequent this topic too often but can anyone point me to a good (reliable) guide for replacing my hard drive on my PS3-- not the physical aspect of it--

I currently have an 80 GB hard drive (PS3 is backwards compatible to PS2 games-- was purchased in March of 2008)-- I want to make sure I transfer all my digital content over to the new hard drive-- I can obviously just re-download my games that were purchased online-- I am mainly concerned about all my save files and virtual PS2 memory cards moving over. I got burnt by this when I had to get my PS3 repaired in 2009 (thankfully 5 days before my warranty expired) after the blueray failed and had to completely repeat GTA IV (as I was going for platinum and did not have 100% yet).

Any links to a good guide with screenies or whatnot would be much appreciated.

You can copy your ps3 game saves onto a USB stick and then copy them back onto your new hard drive its easy and don't take long, you can also use PS Plus. I'm not sure if this will also work with your PS2 memory cards.

I think I may have already stated this last page, I foget though.

Some games have save copy-protection, you can only move the save via Cloud on PS Plus. It's to stop people from cheating trophies, GTA IV on PS3 has this feature, so does Rainbox six and a few others which i forget.

Yes- I learned that the hard way-- when I backed up my PS3's hard drive back in 2009, I assumed it backed up save files too.

But it's been 4 years so I had hoped the process had improved and included the saves (a hard drive backup should be a hard drive backup)--

I did just watch a youtube video on upgrading your hard drive to 1 TB-- it walked through the hard drive selection process too-- if anyone is interested--- this will work (although they didn't mention save files)--

I wonder if it is possible to just remove the hard drive-- and make a mirror image of it onto a PC and then mirror this onto the new hard drive and be up and running alot faster-- just the backup and restore process using the traditional method can take some time--

If going the traditional route, I plan on deleting about every game and DLC pack before backing up and just re-download these overnight to try and save some (of MY) time.

I just ordered a 500 GB hard drive from amazon... should be here tuesday.

Yeah I think one of the older Tomb Raiders had copy protection but all my other PS3 games dont, you can make a copy of GTAIV on a USB though.

Plenty of PS3 games have protected save data, really annoying. They should literally bring back memory cards.

Very odd that my PS3 would not allow me to do it with the GTA IV combined pack via USB.

Hey everyone,

I currently have an 80 GB hard drive (PS3 is backwards compatible to PS2 games-- was purchased in March of 2008)-- I want to make sure I transfer all my digital content over to the new hard drive-- I can obviously just re-download my games that were purchased online-- I am mainly concerned about all my save files and virtual PS2 memory cards moving over.

You can copy your ps3 game saves onto a USB stick and then copy them back onto your new hard drive its easy and don't take long, you can also use PS Plus.

I think I may have already stated this last page, I foget though.

Some games have save copy-protection, you can only move the save via Cloud on PS Plus. It's to stop people from cheating trophies, GTA IV on PS3 has this feature, so does Rainbox six and a few others which i forget.

Ok-- want to clarify some things.

I was able to swap out my hard drive (from 80 gb to 500 gb)-- I backed up my original hard drive to a 64 GB flash drive-- it worked although the backup "writing" to the flash drive was very slow-- took about 4 hours to write 54 GB of data to the flash drive-- the restore to the new hard drive was about 2 hours.

From what I read here and other places-- my saves should NOT have backed up and restored-- so I signed up for Playstation plus for me and my kid so all of our saves would be backed up to the "cloud" and made sure they were all backed up there.

This was a waste of money....

My saves-- ALL of them (PS3 and my PS2 saves (all 5 of my "virtual cards"))-- were there when I restored the data-- and before I even reconnected to the internet.

Upon further research-- I came across this article which clarified some things.

http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/7378/playst...sfer-utilities/

and from this the following....

When you enter the menu, you get three more options:

-Back Up

-Restore

-Delete Backup Data

These options are pretty self-explanatory.  Back Up will do a FULL backup of your game saves, game data, games, videos, music and photos.  There are a few limitations per Sony, however if you backup your PS3 and get a new hard drive but use the same PS3, all of my data has backed up and restored fine. However, copy-protected game saves WILL NOT restore on a different PS3 than the one you originally backed up the data from. This is very good to know if your getting a new PS3 Slim and had a PS3 Phat; you would want to use the Transfer Utility in this case (more on this later).  However, if your just going to upgrade your factory PS3′s hard drive onto the same PS3, a Backup will do the trick.  Also, all data is copied to the backup you can create on an external hard drive so PS3 still has the original data.

-Key points, you can restore a backup and all data back onto the same PS3 and get all of your content back.  However if you restore on a different PS3 than original backup was from, you will not get any copy-protected data back and have to redownload DLC that is protected too.

I bolded the important stuff above....

the gist of it-----If you restore to the SAME PS3, you get ALL your content back (even saves)-- however if you restore to a different PS3, you won't get your copy protected stuff....

If you want to transfer ALL your content to a new PS3 (you can use the data transfer utility) which will move all your content to a new ps3 via an ethernet cable connected between the 2 machines and once again, your saves will move to the new machine.

Anyway-- hope this clears this up and helps someone down the line (save some money at least)

I just had to go through this recently, the back-up option is the way to go. If you have an external Hard Drive you can also use that through the USB cable. From what I remember it need to be formatted to FAT32 and have a folder named. Something like PS3 and then BACKUPS or something close to that. It' wont backup without these folders My whole transfer took like an hour and a half. Just remember to backup the trophies through the cloud. It wont transfer through the backup for some reason. It's also a good idea to have the latest firmware update saved on the backup HDD as well. This is a lot faster than having to redownload it again through the PS3.

Lucky enough to have upgraded to a Solid State Drive. Kinda small at 128 gigs, but it's plenty fast. My playthrough of Skyrim is much better, without the lag time created by the old HDD searching or acting as a memory buffer. I've also heard GT5 is better too, but that was loaded on my fattie which had the ole YLOD and I just haven't gotten around to fixing. Another story...

Anyways, hope that helps.

You don't need to create any folders-- they will be created automatically---

but yes-- your external media (hard drive or flash drive) will need to be formated in the FAT32 format..... it is even possible to create a partition on an external hard drive and only format that partition as FAT32-- (Example-- you have a 1TB external hard drive-- you can create a 100 GB (or whatever size you desire) partition and then format just the 100GB partition as FAT32)-- when you plug in the external hard drive the PS3 will ONLY see the FAT32 partition.

Note that you will need 3rd party software to format the partition-- windows will NOT do that.

This vid will walk you through this... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcSBjGYnPB--the partition and formatting info are in the first couple minutes of the walk through....

The vid is ok but he kind of messed up the restore part IMO...

I'm having freezing problems after I downloaded the latest 4.40 update. Some games freeze during play (NBA 2k11, GTA IV, Episodes from LC), while some don't. I have the older, fat PS3. I've checked online and I'm not the only one with this problem. So ticked off at Sony. They better fix this ASAP.

I have a FAT one too-- have not experienced any freeze ups playing Assasins Creed 3 or any of my other games-- My kid has complained of occasional freezeups when playing blackops II

I edited my above post slightly-- just wanted to add that my PS2 saves WERE ALL THERE TOO (My PS3 is a fat backwards compatible to PS2 games)-- I did NOT have to restore either my PS2 or PS3 saves since I restored to the same console I backed up from.

First off, there is an official PS3 thread. And second, I don't think your PS3 is dying. Freezes are quite common. I've had my slim for 7 or 8 months now and it has frozen around 15 times. It still works properly though.

They aren't common for me. IV rarely freezes, infact, I don't think it has done that before.

GTA IV has never frozen on me either, but AC:Brotherhood did, 4 times. But that may be because I bought it used and there were a few scratches on it. The other times my PS3 has frozen is when I am using the browser and I open two or three sites at once.
