GTA V - Red Dead Redemption - Same world?

I like to think of them as the same geographical area sort of, the RDR world sort of accounts for Texas and parts of California, just in a different time period. The way I look at it is that over the 100 years, the land has changed so much that really only names would be recognizable, if even those stayed the same. I picture Blackwater down the coast from Liberty City, in between LC and VC. I also picture Armadillo to have extended outward and now is a Dallas-like city, but with a different name, maybe Mercer. I mean, none of it actually matters or is even remotely accurate, but hey, sometimes when I'm lost in one of R*'s worlds, it's fun to think about.

@above RDR takes place in the SW United States. Therefore, Blackwater is nowhere near LC or VC.

Another point regarding the Red Dead universe that everyone tends to ignore is that Redemption was a sequel. Revolver was first. Also, I'm pretty sure Rockstar confirmed that they are making a new RDR (which would be the 3rd in the series).

Regarding whether or not they're in the same "universe" as GTA, I'd say probably not. That's just my opinion, based on the same reasons several others have stated.

Bully, however, (IIRC) has been confirmed to have taken place in the GTA HD universe.

People still read into the radio using real life names and places as meaning they also exist in GTA?

What's next, the HD era and the 3D era are the same because there is a Grove Street in both?

Ahh Genesis, good times good times, how long ago did you take that screenshot? Or did you use the wayback machine?

Nah, I just google image searched lol.

No, it isn't. Several of the fictional brands in the GTA/Manhunt universe(s) would have existed in the RDR timeframe. One very easy and obvious tie-in would have been to show Sprunk or eCola soda being sold as a patent medicine, parodying the early history of Cola-Cola. But, unless there's an Easter egg I'm unaware of, RDR fastidiously avoids any mention of any proprietary elements of the GTA series whatsoever. Likewise, Bully, built on the GTASA engine, reuses mechanical aspects of GTA in building its world, including the soda machines for health, but the GTA soda brands are not used even though that would have been the easiest thing to do. They went out of their way to change it to not be from GTA, to separate it.

That said, Rockstar drops hints that its past games are part of the mythology (not history) of the worlds of subsequent games: Bullsworth Academy appearing on TV in GTAIV, John Marston's hat on a trash can in L.A. Noire and a Red Dead book by Marston on a shelf in GTAV — things that are "real" and might have some explanation but that are not explained.

I guess in the end Rockstar doesn't have a confirmed or denied canon. There's plenty of references but nothing to confirm it, so maybe they leave it up to the users to decide their own canon.

IMO the online character creation is somewhat referencing that John Marston exists (existed) in the same universe as GTA IV and V. If I remember correctly, there was a helicopter tour where the guy piloting the chopper told that LC was really different, and rebuilt or something like that, so names and other stuff could've been easily changed since RDR's storyline. We are talking about more than 100 years, so yeah.

But following that logic, GTA III would still be in the same universe, since Claude and Catalina are both available as parents in GTAO, so... forget it.

That's honestly the best way to go about it. People put too much stock into "canon" these days, especially when a creator or publisher doesn't worry themselves with it too much.

There's too many things you have to ignore for GTAIII as a game to have been in the same timeline as GTA IV (you have to basically ignore the entire history of LC in GTA IV for it to work)

That's why I personally like to believe that A Claude/Misty/Grove Street Families existed in the HD Universe, just not THE Claude/Misty/GSF from GTAIII/San Andreas.

Claude and Misty. We don't want to think about what Claude and Catalina's offspring would be.

Characters in the current GTA universe seem vaguely aware of a past that resembles the previous universe, but anything that would not make sense in current continuity can only be referenced vaguely. The representation of Grove Street in GTAV symbolizes the problem I think. It's there, it's kind of, sort of the same, maybe? But it's still basically there. The past isn't gone, it's just disconnected.

If anyone wants to believe they are the same universe, I say as long as r* hasn't explicitly stated it, go ahead, what's the harm in it. All I will vouch for is hd being an alternate to 3d. Although just for fun I personally believe cj and the grove st set and all other 3d protags existed in hd but the story was alternate for them and they was just average people and nothing special in that universe, it's a game and whatever floats your boat to make it fun for you, its cool, who cares.

It was a stupid very vague "hint" "speculation" "leak" thread. I use those words VERY loosely because it was mostly just nonsense and incoherent rambling.

There isn't a connected universe. If you want that go back to your superhero comics. They drop little Easter eggs around their games like anybody else. Jimmy from bully can be seen in Liberty City, Carcer City is mentioned in the 3d universe. Streets in V are named after RDR and John Marston lives on in novels and the DNA of online players.

The John Marsten we play as in RDR is not in the same universe as GTA. New York and California are explicitly referenced, not Liberty City and San Andreas.

But.... Who is to say that 100 years ago in the GTA universe there wasn't an ex outlaw turned rancher called John Marsten who lived a very similar life. That is certainly possible.

Yep. f*cked it up again. You can easily tell how much I've been playing GTAO to be honest. Multiplayer is not my thing when it comes to GTA. :)

Rockstar didn't want to change the songs lyrics, like Hollywood Nights by Bob Segar or any songs on Radio Los Santos in San Andreas mentioning Compton. Eazy-E couldn't rerecord his songs to say Ganton because he's dead, and Tupac... let's just say he's dead. They're just songs that fit the timeline, I doubt they even thought of changing the lyrics because it would ruin the original songs.

New York = Liberty State

California = San Andreas

I don't remember R* purposely mentioning real-world cities in their top games, other than L.A. Noire. If they did, it was unintentional.

what the heck are you people smoking? Red Dead and ANY of the GTA's are not even close to in the same "world" unless you count the fact that texas is yes indeed in the same world as nyc , and LA and miami..... i think some peps just got way to much time on their hands, please find a job ... a hobby . something....this is just a irrelevant topic

They have gotten some "real" artists to do "GTA versions" of some songs over the years. I think they "want" to do it but obviously it's impossible or impractical in many cases.

It's game speculation. People like to speculate over things.

But this is the GTA forums where random throwaway details must be connected to anything and everything

Like others have said R* used fictional cities in place of real ones since it gives them artistic licence over the design, and they didn't change they songs cause it would pretty tough to bring back Eazy-E from the dead, they did it for the dancehall artists because it was feasible and probably cheap.
