GTA V - Red Dead Redemption - Same world?

I don't know if it's been answered before, but I'm curious if RDR takes place in the same universe GTA does.

  • Several street names or other references to RDR are in GTA V.
  • Some of Rockstar's other games take place in the same world.
  • I think I've seen people say that, because RDR mentions New York City, that means there's no chance of it being in the same universe. San Andreas has a mention of NYC too, and it takes place in the same universe as the games, so it's possible that New York City and Liberty City are separate cities that co-exist in the United States.

What do you think?

San Andreas never mentioned NYC its just the K-Rose radio host mentioning a song title

Rockstar specifically chose a song all about NYC. It wasn't like a passing mention in a random song. Compton, and all of California too, exist in the GTA universe if the songs are any indication of canon. In my opinion though California/NYC and other areas are in the GTA world, but they're different from their real-world counterparts. It'd be different if there were occasional references, but considering Rockstar has a few songs picked out specifically about certain states or cities, it probably means they're out there somewhere.

Red Dead Redemption makes mention of New York and California, so it's doubtful imo.

But wouldn't that mean there's 2 statue of liberties in GTA land then? Or a liberty stature and statue of happiness.

It's a bit far fetched... the placement of songs could just be an oversight. Why have a recreation of NYC in 2 different games, when there would also be another "real" NYC elsewhere. It's too messy

In RDR, there are numerous mentions of California.

So the logical thing to assume would be that the canon universe of Grand Theft Auto (HD) and the Red Dead series are different, however due to a "J. Marston" writing a book in GTA V it could be assumed that there is a separate Red Dead universe in which the Red Dead series universe is part of the Grand Theft Auto universe, and vice versa.

Of course, J. Marston could just be a reference.

Bully was confirmed to exist in the GTA IV/V universe, and Bully has a Geography section where you match US flags to US states. It includes New York and California. That doesn't prove RDR is set in the same world, but it does prove California/NY are indeed states in the country, but have a different layout than they do in our world, so RDR making mentions of NY or Cali doesn't mean that it can't be in the same universe.

Rdr takes place in the early 1900s, so if anything it'll be mentioned as something historical.

My opinion - all these places exist in the same universe. the mention of LA and NYC and other real world locals could be explained as nicknames... Example: New York is also know as the big apple... Well in R* universe, Liberty City is all known as New York City, Los Santos aka Los Angeles, etc...

I can imagine either:

A) Rockstar was a lot more lenient with their locations in the 3D era. Liberty City wasn't too strictly based on NYC, nor was Vice City strictly based on Miami. Ergo, one can assume that NYC and MIami also exist within the 3D universe.

B) Rockstar liked the song, save for the mention of real life counterparts of a certain company, location, etc. Thus, it's possible Rockstar wants us to use our imagination to fill "New York" into "Liberty City" or whatever.

I just assume that the location names are interchangeable in gta lore, as far as location goes. The consistency of the radio referring to real life places in "gta world" games works pretty well to prove it, even though it really was no choice as that'd be almost impossible to avoid anyway. The bully example is good too. I say we assume what r* didn't already explain like the hd 3d separation. I has even thinking mp3 was in the same universe a few days ago,

The games were both made by R*, of course there are references to RDR in V. There are references to hundreds of other things in V too. References do not mean they take place in the same universe.

Some rappers actually changed lyrics of their songs, or wrote entirely new songs for GTA4's The Beat. I don't know how much work it would take, or if Rockstar had the right to do this, but it would've been cool if they changed the lyrics of some of the songs to fit their game. San Andreas Love, Vinewood Nights, etc. But yeah, your B option is most likely right.

The new classic

There is a book in Frabklins house called "Red dead" by "j marston" so theres that. They aslo have a "cholla springs avenue " in sandy shores. Rockstar had hints like this in Max payne 3 so maybe they are making a new red dead game?

Same place, different time. And probably no.

I'm sure we'll see a RDR Online come 2016 when the sequel releases.

I'd love to see a Bully Online as well though

I don't think that there's a strong value for all this supposed interrelated Rockstar universe. I think that the story writers, headed by Dan Houser, don't concern themselves too much with this idea of a big universe. It's more of easter eggs than something put there for purpose. They can tell you, yes, they exist in the same universe, but who are they to judge? it's up to you, as a player, to immerse yourself by believing that there's a distant, unreachable Los Santos while you're wandering the streets of Liberty City.

do artists live in the same space from expression to expression? its very limiting. why group them in the same context? GTA is not even close to the red dead universe. they were created as separate entities to explore different ideas. does an artist not evolve?

Rockstar games reference each other often, but I doubt GTA takes place in the RDR world. RDR mentions real life places like Los Angeles and New York.

The R* games that I think do take place in the GTAverse are Manhunt and Bully. Manhunt most explicitly, as the second game's protagonist was born in San Fierro and Cottonmouth's police choppers resemble those from VC (it's Florida).
