Are freezing and crashing the same thing?

Posting this in the GTA Online section because this is just something I was wondering, and I'm not really asking for help on anything in-game in this thread.

Whenever people have certain technical problems with GTA Online, they sometimes say that their game has crashed. This usually happens when their game doesn't respond.

When the screen stops and the game stops responding for me, I refer to it as "freezing". Because of this, I'm not really sure what people mean when they say their game is crashing. This brings me to my question. Are freezing and crashing the same thing? If not, what does it mean when GTA Online has crashed?

Im my mind they are 2 different things. To me freezing is when the game pauses and then starts back again. Its just a slight pause in the game itself. A crash for me requires a full restart of the console to get anything happening.

Yes, or a random idiot in a stolen chrome adder with neon blue dollar sign wheels just CRASHED into their house and destroyed their console.

Freeze = restart ps3 (by button or power cord). Crash = restart gta

I think you may be refering to lag on your connection or rockstar's sh*tty reliance on the cloud... lol :(

Freeze = Screen stands still indefinitely

Crash = The application hard crashes back to the console menu; console may reboot automatically

freezing usually means the game froze their console, which involves pressing the power button off then on to restart the system.

crash means you need to restart the game.

Crashing and freezing are the same thing. If your system stops functioning properly it's a crash. You can call it whatever you want there is no rule.

Technically you'd need debug tools to know what exactly occurs. A freeze occurs when the application runs out of memory but the code is still trying to catch up indefinitely. A crash results in the application just failing entirely and the whole application crumbles

(A crash will churn out a crash log for the devs to use as the application shuts off. Freezing will not churn out any kind of crash log as the application code is still trying to catch up)

freezing is when a substance passes from a liquid to a solid state by the loss of heat

crashing is when something makes a hard impact and/or the sound it makes when this happens.

seriously though it's semantics, they both pretty much mean that a piece of elctronics or software has seized to function due to an error

This sums it up pretty much.
