Gay Tony
I have not watched the Simpsons in a very, very long time. But I watched it tonight and noticed something, something no-one and I mean noone or anyone in the media has talked about but is a -huge part- of the show itself. What would be the reaction if Homer Simpson choked Lisa/Marge and not Bart? This isn't to say I still don't like the show or anything, I just find it strange it hasn't been talked about (especially given the media today) and wonder how people would react if the context were slightly different. Bart is like 9 or so. And it is joke for him to be choked by his father 4x his size. Again I know it's a cartoon and I'm not bitching or anything but I find this interesting. Do you think people would complain if this abuse was done to Lisa/Marge and not Bart? What are your opinions? a20characterusername
As long as it's always done during her soapbox moments, I think it'd be a welcome addition. t3h PeNgU1N oF d00m, Onett and Niobium

darthYENIK
This show is dead the plot goes nowhere I give it a year before were down to holiday specials and made of TV movies.I would take that bet. Let's meet back here in a year so I can laugh at you. As for the topic at hand. Homers assaulting of Bart has become pretty self referential in the past decade. Often alluding to the fact that if it were a real man choking his son, it would be a horrible situation. And I'm pretty sure Homer has choked Lisa and Marge in a similar self referential manner. Alpha Demigod
Violence against males, regardless of perpetrator, or context (adult-on-child violence, spousal violence, sexual violence) is not take nearly as seriously in the media as violence onto females. If this was Homer-onto-Lisa/Marge there I imagine there would have been more controversy and I assume the trope wouldn't have lasted as many seasons. It would have gradually been written out, while "doh!" and "...donuts.." would have stayed. I'm not in a state where I can go into another long discussion about this, I've too many academic commitments to attend to,but I've done what the OP has asked and provided my input. You asked "what if..." and I gave my answer. But hey, what do I know? I'm a lazy scumbag and a pure deadbeat. I have no credibility to say anything about life and I don't expect anyone to take any ounce of this post with a speck of seriousness.Have fun everyone. I feel this double standard exists in real life and media that is live-action, like sitcoms or television serials. In cartoons, the double standard is less prevalent. In Family Guy, Peter has been abusing female Meg for years. Edited November 11, 2014 by Dark Bordeus Gay Tony
gtamann123
Yeah if Homer choked Lisa there would probably be a little bit of uproar but nothing to actually acknowledge

sivispacem
Dark Bordeus, why don't you respond to the comments in the existing Feminism thread rather than duplicating your comments here? On that note the whole thread on s basically an extension of that discussion.
