I'm not sure how much a million GTA$ cashcard costs, but in practice that's the discount for returning players plus the digital incentives like the Duck of Death :-S

I suppose the digital money is no incentive if you've glitched plenty, but for legit players it's a weekend grinding for free!

EBgames and similar stores may offer a trade-in of their own, like they did with The Last of Us (bring in the ps3 copy to get the ps4 copy for 24.99) but at this point it's a definite no from the publisher, probably seeing as a lot of development time (money) was invested into the upgraded version

I got $21 at Best Buy because they are currently offering 150% value trade in deals on all games. GTA V normally gets you $14 there. I imagine that will drop when it's released on next gen so i traded it a bit early.

If it was just a graphical update then I would not understand why they wouldn't offer a discount. However, they upgraded lots of stuff, added more content and it probably works way better (but let's wait judging that until next week) but for the amount of new stuff I don't have to think twice.

Most games with the free upgrade were made for xbone ps4 and then downsized for ps360. Gta v was made for ps360 and upgraded for next gen

As an ex-QA tester for a high-profile publisher, I can vouch against his statement as it's entirely on a case-by-case basis.

 

I know for a fact that a certain game that was released on both last gen and new gen was developed on a last-gen console as the original SKU as it was determined (by that specific studio for that specific project) the easiest to work with and port to the other platforms.

 

There is no such thing as a "global rule" encompassing what platform the game must be originally designed on.

I don't think they need to offer a discount. Offering a hefty discount would be a stupid business move.

 

Also, I'm sick and tired of people quoting mine craft as an example which is one of the highest grossing pay to play games and made more profit then Gta v has and easier to port as it's mostly pixels and the players create everything.

 

Also, the crap about them releasing on old gen just for sales, how many PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles have been sold because of it? Maybe Sony and Microsoft offered them a deal.

I just wanna go ahead and tell you that's not necessarily true. R* developers are numerous in number and have access to proprietary (and third party) engines and tools to aid development. Did you know Minecraft was written entirely in Java and, even today, Mojang is only host to a handful of active developers?

 

I'm not saying Minecraft was harder to port, but I'm saying it's impossible to truly know which one is harder to port unless you've been in both of their shoes. None of us can say that.

This isn't a upgrade ppl. This is a game being released on another platform. You buy it because you want it on your chosen platform or you don't. Simple. There is no entitled to jack sh*t. You are graced that R* since GTA included with it's release a free MP section called GTAO (which they want to continue over multiple releases in the future) and because it suits them to grace you with carrying your character over to another platform if you so wish to continue on your GTAO progress, they will help you with it once(in my eyes once for free). It doesnt entitle you to a discount or a right to say it's a upgrade it just isn't. It's GTA5 your buying afterall, it just happens to grant you access to a MP section called GTAO.

I didn't sell my last gen console (well i did a ps3, but i didn't really use it except as a BR player) i simply sold the game, I kept my 360 and most of my games since xb1 and 360 share an xbl account. That way i can play on the new system and the old. true i can't play GTA:O on the old system anymore, but i'm pretty sure once i get on next gen i'll forget about GTA:O on the 360 anyway.

I don't understand why everybody cries about this. The other companies that have done this, done it because there was a small gap in the release dates between the previous gen and current gen release. It's been over a year since GTA 5 was released on the 360 and PS3. If the XBO/PS4 version would have released in November 2013 then Rockstar probably would have offered a 10$ trade up cost like alot of other companies did.

You'd think that from a marketing standpoint, it would be smart to offer a discount on the new game if you trade in your old game, but Rockstar must've researched it and concluded that there were enough suckers out there who'd cough up another 60 bucks that they wouldn't have to dangle a carrot on a stick.

I'm really not seeing a problem. It's like if i were to buy an xbox and expect them to give me a discount for a game i got on ps3. It's a different console. I got what i paid for already. I WANT it on the ps4 now and i'm going to pay for that experience.

I genuinely don't understand why people think GTA V for PS4 and Xbox One will be that much different.

It's the same damn game. There's no new GAMEPLAY. All the sh*t they've added is just aesthetic stuff, much like all of the updates we've gotten for Online. Reskinned vehicles, weapons, etc. Nothing exciting, therefore we shouldn't have to pay full price.
