Melech
The Berlin Wall was erected August 13, 1961 by the communist regime of East Germany dividing Berlin for 28 years. On November 9, 1989, the people of East and West Berlin brought down the wall and reunited a city that had been divided politically since 1945, and divided physically by the wall since 1961. The fall of the wall was part of the wider collapse of communism in Europe. It was followed by the reunification of West and East Germany on October 3, 1990. Today the world celebrates the end of communism, today we celebrate freedom! Stephan90
Great day and happiest moment in our post war history, but it will probably last 50 years more until all the damage has been repaired. Sad to see these stupid pictures and cartoons being posted in this thread. Btw. communism never existed in practice and was always only an ideologiacal aim. trip
Absolutely great pic in the OP. Crazy to think that there was a physical wall that separated different ideologies and what-nots. It was almost a shock when it came down since it seemed so permanent and common place. I think it has more to do with Lenin taking power away from the Soviets (workers councils) and putting it all in the hands of the state. AKA: state-capitalism. universetwisters
Congrats, free world! Let's all celebrate this monumental event with a Rock N Roll song from the former German Democratic Republic Sorta related, why do a lot of communist countries have the word "democratic" in it? Seems like a double negative sorta. Melech

Der Süden
Berlin rebuilt a part of the wall for the anniversary, but this time in the form of 7,000 illuminated helium balloons which were placed where the wall once stood. Tonight they have let the balloons fly into the sky, which was supposed to symbolize the fall of the wall. I feel very happy for my homeland that it's united again. One people shouldn't be divided. Happy 25th anniversary Germany. Stephan90
There are still some segments of the wall and a couple of the watch towers. I don't know what others think about it, but in my opinion they should all be demolished, maybe except for one single small segment. This is not something we need to have to remember. The palace of the republic was also demolished and now they rebuild the Berlin city palace, which is pretty cool imho. Another personal take on the topic. I was born in late 1990 after the reunification. When I was a little kid, I didn't know that I was living in a country that was divided up until shortly before my birth. My parents never told it to me, until I found out at some time when I was older (I don't know when and how I found out anymore). I can't say that I was ever negatively affected although my mother didn't find a job for a long time after she stayed at home the first years for me and my brother from the date of my birth onwards. make total destroy
Guys! I've figured it out! SPND is a f*cking NAZI! Y'know, I didn't think it would be long- second reply, no less- before he'd sh*t all over this ocassion upon clicking this thread. We, here in the UK, have an occasion called "Remembrance Sunday"- which happens to be today, coincidentally- where we remember the fallen of WW1. But SPND strikes me as the type who'd love to disrupt such a memorial by running around waving placards and screaming how much we need to overthrow the "evil disgusting white establishment". F*ck those liberators, eh SPND? Hey, can you like, shut the f*ck up? Yeah, thanks. Detective Phelps, Flachbau and Special Members

Der Süden
I was born in the west. I remember my mother bad mouthing about eastern Germans a few times. She grew up in a divided Germany, I didn't. I remember a class mate from the east who always got pissed when we called him Ossi (term for eastern Germans). I remember a close friend of my family telling us how the infamous Stasi (state security) spied on them and followed her on the streets in a car. And I remember my ex girlfriend's uncle (they moved here from East Germany after the reunification) picking on me for eating fries without a fork. I exactly remember what he asked me: "You f*cking little Wessi, are you not capable of eating with fork and knife?". Wessi is a term for western Germans. Who is SPND? Stephan90
And because of these stories we need another 50 years. My parents only reminisce about "everyone having a job" but they don't wish back the political system. Everyone with clear mind knew that it wasn't a democracy. My region was really hit hard economically after the reunifiaction. Some pictures taken from our street. A couple of hundred metres away from there we live in a nice house near the water. It is a very big contrast. They produced glass at this site. Today everything is flat and plants and trees start growing. Many old buildings from companies were demolished after the reunification and there are still some ruins. A whole borough was demolished within twenty years and now it starts to become forest again. We lost 50% of our population within that time. That's pretty much the ugliest ruin of my town only like one hundred metres away from the train station. In school the whole East and West thing was never a topic. And no one was thinking in these categories, which is a sign that the differences will vanish once nobody has relatives who lived in the divided country. Melech
Nice anthem, horrible country: Funny that the lyrics say "Deutschland, einig Vaterland" (Germany, united homeland).
