Nick1020
Even though it's a year old but new reports are showing that Samsung are pushing for a 4k display by August. http://www.phonearena.com/news/Samsung-tipped-prepping-a-6-4K-AMOLED-display-with-700ppi-for-next-August-just-in-time-for-the-Note-5_id62541 And Sharp working on a 4k display by 2016 http://www.phonearena.com/news/Sharp-reportedly-working-on-a-4K-4096-x-2160-resolution-smartphone-display-panel_id62249 This brings up my question: should smartphones have this type of resolution? Flachbau
This brings up my question: should smartphones have this type of resolution? Not at all. We don't need 4K on smart phones. We don't even need 4K televisions.. or monitors.. or whatever it may be. 4K has limited content as of right now. If you add a 4K display on a smart phone, it'll drain more power from the battery, leaving you with less on-time than other smart phones. 1080p is fine. hornedturtle
DeafMetal
I don't see any reason to do so. At all. It's like putting a racing car engine inside a Pace Bus. But, people will buy it ofc, because of the trendy new buzzwords.

I'm not saying you need 4K on a phone, that is too much. You can hardly see any difference on 5" - 6" device. However, regarding TVs and monitors. What do you think should arrive first, content or tools to watch 4K? Without mass use of 4K nobody is going to invest in 4K production. Content always comes later, just like it happened with FullHD. Regarding original question, no - smartphones, specifically, are absolutely useless with 4K screens. 4K recording/camera - great. I'd much rather see them inventing a new type of battery technology, because current batteries aren't capable of keeping up with all that power we get in a smartphone nowadays. hornedturtle
4k tvs are really only suitable for commercial purposes. standard tvs are just too small to justify the extra cost.
AzO
Do you remember how expensive first FullHD TVs were? We all said the same sh*t about all of this 5-8 years ago. It's a pointless discussion. 4K is happening and eventually we will be talking "whether 8K is necessary or not". The demand is there and it will be increasing, just give it some time. Flachbau
You make very valid points, AzO. I agree with you on most of them. If a company is pushing a 4K display on a phone, they're just looking for eye candy.. how many phones have we seen with low end specs? Or ugly designs? I cant stand any of these 4K displays on phones. I personally won't buy a 4K TV for a while.. probably not until I move off to college or whenever I get my own apartment. By then, we should have plenty of content. Heck, 4K might even be be facing a new competitor. I remember when I was younger, a new HD TV would be about $500+. TheFlareEntercounter
I agree with everyone here, a 4k display on mobile devices is completely useless. I can hardly see a difference in screen resolutions on smartphones (aside those crappy "mini" devices).
Otter
Do you remember how expensive first FullHD TVs were? The first one I saw in a store was 8 thousand dollars. Crikey. And I do remember having conversations about how ridiculous that resolution was. But I soon ate crow. And I've seen some jaw-dropping 4k displays lately, too. But that said, on a phone? Absolutely overkill, unless its also going to double as some sort of VR visor. I mean, my ipad air is around 2K resolution, and as I type on it right now, I can't make out a pixel. I need to hold it less than a foot away from my face to see individual pixels. So 4K on a phone seems a little silly to me.

Flachbau
My local Best Buy never has any 4K televisions on display.. what up with that? I've tried over certain periods of the year.. still no luck. I'll try again after Black Friday. I really want to witness it for myself. I've only witnessed a 1080p television when I got my new 22 inch.

Having it on phones won't be any better. Edited November 11, 2014 by LightningLord411

OverTheBelow
Absolutely pointless. Why the f*ck do I need four times the resolution of my desktop on my phone? Won't be able to tell a 1080p and 4k phone apart in real world circumstances.
Fraizer
Mobile would be pointless as many are saying. I would like better cameras on phones honestly. The 120 FPS camera on my iPhone is awesome for slow-mo but I want more... 240 FPS, a f*cking 1000 FPS on my phone. That would be grrrreat. But I remember 4K tvs showing up at CES 2 or 3 years ago... at that time they were about $10,000 for a 75" 4K. The price has been nearly, if not, cut in half since. I will personally be waiting to get one but will be getting one because what I have seen looks f*cking amazing. There was a 65" 4K Samsung and Sony, both looked great! Whiskey
I seen a 4K TV in my local HMV. 4K's only good when you have 4K content. I don't notice much over 1080 since I'm slowly going blind from computer screens anyway.
