Definitive Friendly GTAO Mode Thread (Counter-Arguments DEBUNKED)

Disclaimer: This thread is going to be a massive wall of text (but, really, if you don't like to read, why the hell are you on a forum?).

Background:

Back on the PS2, when online gaming on consoles first became a thing, I used to play a game called Battlefield 2: Modern Combat. This was a game specifically designed for war, with no other objectives than to kill other dudes. But this game was also one of the first online games to have massive, open maps and a ton of vehicles.

So naturally, it was pretty easy to find a lobby or start your own lobby where everyone was foregoing killing altogether and just doing some cool stunts and map exploration. We had parachute races, we tried to make the longest chain of landmines and C4 possible, and sometimes we just found a good hole in the ground to sit in and bullsh*t.

Fast Forward to the Year 2014:

Now GTA Online is released, the first real online open-world sandbox game on the consoles. Killing is a part of the game, with plenty of weapons to use, but it's certainly not the only objective in the game. There's racing, stunting (with possibly the most diverse set of vehicles ever), base-jumping, player/vehicles customization, co-operative missions, stealth gameplay, exploration, photography, role-playing, sight-seeing, free-roaming, and pretty much anything else that pink, lumpy thing between your ears can imagine.

So what happened in the years between BF2: MC and GTAO that changed the paradigm from "what other cool things can we do in this killing game?" to "what killing can we do in this other cool things game?" I don't really have the answer.

But I can certainly answer some of the arguments against being a GTAO pacifist:

"You're playing the wrong game."

No, I'm pretty sure I'm playing a sandbox game. You can play in a sandbox however you want to. MATTER OF FACT, if you only want to do one thing in a sandbox (e.g. killing), you're playing the wrong game. There are lots of pure shooters available.

"Grow some balls."

Grow some brains.

"Play invite-only."

Then how am I going to meet new peeps (a.k.a. the entire purpose of playing online, instead of single-player or offline-co-op)? Why don't you do all your killing in invite-only? The same argument could be used on you, and it still doesn't make sense.

Hell, why don't you do your killing in deathmatches (you know, the entire game mode that was designed specifically for that purpose).

"There's nothing else to do in public online sessions."

Translation - "I'm not creative enough to think of anything interesting to do, so I'll just go CoD some unsuspecting people in the face."

"It's a game about crime and murder."

And about a million other things, some of which you should try some day, or else you wasted $60.

"Lol, you're scared of being killed on a game."

In the same sense that I'm scared of going to a movie theater and having to listen to some douche yelling on his phone the whole time. I paid money for this game, I'd like to enjoy it how I want to enjoy it (which involves not having it become CoD 2.0 every time I load the game).

"You just suck at defending yourself."

Completely irrelevant. That's like saying I hate the movie-theater phone yeller because I suck at hearing the movie over his stupid voice. Maybe the dude yelling is actually the problem.

"You're a hypocrite, if you can play how you want, then I can kill people."

Never said you couldn't. I'm saying there should be lobbies for both people who want to kill and people who don't.

More to come...

LOL.

totally agree that it should be implemented, even if there's no ways to make cash in these lobbies

... So like what's your point?

Do you want lobbies where killing is disabled?

Are you just giving counter-argument to a lot of people on this forum?

I agree with what you said though

http://gtaforums.com/topic/746028-people-still-kill-on-sight/?p=1066436147

"Well a sandbox game is whatever you want it to be".

I'm pretty sure he means that there is more to this game than just killing

But unless you got a headset (and use it (properly)), know someone irl or met someone on a forum, there's no way you can accomplish many of the things he suggested.....

Then you go on to basically contradict yourself by saying those that only want to kill are playing the incorrect game.

That's like saying if you only want to race/customise cars, you're playing the wrong game.

GTAO is a sandbox and I will play however I want to and do whatever I feel like doing.

"whatever you want", so if other people want just to kill is ok for him.

Anyways, yes, there's much more than just killing, obviously, but what can you do beside join/create "invite only lobbies" to completely avoid griefers?

that's the point of this thread: suggesting an alternative that is friendly lobbies. Those who like to kill others all the time can stay in the current lobbies. This would just be an alternative for those not looking for warfare at that time.

Great post, agree with you 100%

There are a few issues, issues that I hope R★ are willing to address pretty soon..

Gta has evolved, its no longer just a 3rd person shooter in a city, the world is more the game now than the guns and story, there is so much more to gta now than blasting everthing that moves and this is where the issues start..

We are now getting 2 types of players playing gta, or to be more specific GTA ONLINE, the one type of player wants to run about blasting every "noob" insight, having fun getting one over on other player, and thats fine

But we are now also getting people commimg to gta online who want a bit more, that may be roleplay, friendly cruising, exploring or simply as OP put just being creative with this wonderfully detailed world and its cars/peds and myriad of other options..

The trouble is these 2 type of players dont mix well, im hoping R★ pluck up the courage and make combat lobbys and creative lobbys, then I think gta online has the legs to be the biggest and best multiplayer experience on the planet.

Aren't "invite only" friendly lobbies? Write here -> http://gtaforums.com/forum/298-find-a-lobby-meetups/ find new friends and play with them.

Summary of people who are against friendly lobbies:

"I want to kill defenseless people who aren't even trying to fight back because I'm terrible at killing people who are."

Yeah that's the best alternative as the system is now, but it could be hell of a lot better. If you have ever played IV's multiplayer, you would know they had friendly lobbies where you couldn't shoot other players of blow up their vehicle, but you could still band together to fight cops, drive around, etc without planning it out. made for a lot of good times.

There's no logical reason to be against friendly "meet new people to play with" lobbies.

If all you do is kill, there are shooting games.

If all you do is customize cars, there are racing games.

If you do a little of everything, there are sandbox games.

What? In GTA IV you can still shoot rocket launcher to blow people up in the sky and they fall and get hurt and eventually die or you can run them over hurting and killing them or hit them with Annihilator's blades, always to "push them away" and hurt/kill them. And yes, you can blow up every single vehicle anyway. But yes, you can't hurt/kill people with non explosive bullets. So, isn't passive mode the same thing (exception is that rocket launchers don't affect you at all in passive mode ).

Edit: ok, you can't fight cops in passive mode... so yes, let's do these friendly fire off lobbies.

if anyone is looking for a friendly player, feel free to send me a friend request on ps3, as long as your mature enough and don't kill me for no reason

Simple.

Join a Crew and played in a Closed Crew or Closed Friend Session.

Otherwise, too bad.

That's what you should do if you want to kill people.

Argument debunked.

There is always a reason: sadism for example.

I understand your frustration OP. I really do. I would like to be able to roam around LS without getting lead to the face every time too. But isn't your argument a bit hypocritical? On one hand you are saying others are in the wrong for playing how they want to and then advising them on how you think they should play the game.

EDIT:

"You're a hypocrite, if you can play how you want, then I can kill people."

Why? Can't he suggest to use closed sessions for killing and open sessions for the rest? Anyways, guys, deathmatch games are there, but you maybe prefer to kill someone who don't fight back.

Because of these opposing ideas I have multiple psn's and crews. Few crews are just chill, photograph sh*t and hang out. Then an alter ego gets to play when I log in with my other crew. These guys are ruthless, kill on sight, own the lobby, Psychopaths. So the best of both worlds.

BoJack Cognac

I played Red Dead Redemption online a week ago while tripping on drugs, and I went into the friendly lobby and it was a lot of fun.

When I'm on hallucinogens, I start to have a bad trip when I go into a game like that and people start killing me.

It really freaks me out and I end up unplugging the entire console because I think the government is spying on me.
