GTA V vs. IV - realism

I agree that over the top is good and GTA has done it from the start but according to this board if you do it now you are just catering to immature kiddies.

There's nothing wrong with Over The Top missions in my opinion.

GTA 2, GTA San Andreas, GTA 5 and maybe LCS, are the only Over The Top GTA games. The rest weren't. So overall, the series has stayed pretty grounded.

Please tell me if killing the whole squad of SWAT teams or 50 russians as 1 man only is grounded? If this isn`t over the top then i don`t know what it is.

It`s completely the same as invading the military jet with the crop duster. It`s both sci-fi, impossible to outlive it in real life.

So i don`t see any diference. Any mission where you kill more than 10 people as 1 man is over the top if you ask me.

The objective of killing the Russians is simply more grounded than the objective of breaking into a secret base for green goo.

Besides, i never said i have a problem with the OTT side, i'm just trying to say that the series usually tries to stay grounded.

I was disappointed in the lack of realistic bullet wounds like in red dead redemption. There is very little blood in gta 5.

You should see Max Payne 3, in gta v the bulletholes on people looks like a movie(a pretty sh*tty tho), in RDR and MP3 they actually put some effort, gta v payed a guy with a mcdonalds to make the bulletholes and ragdoll reactions, seriously its so dumbed down to a point, that i believe a guy sitting on the keyboard would do a better job

It has more to do with suspension of belief in a similar way most Hollywood action movies convey. It's obviously not likely, but it's not as absurd as somehow

ending up in Chop's body during "Chop" and seeing things from his perspective.

I clicked the spoiler thinking it contained something I already knew and now I regret it. :(

I'm pretty sure I would have ruined the whole game by that time the PC version comes out.

Regardless of when the last reply was posted, I'd like to state my point of view.

Both GTA IV and GTA V applied some sort of realism in certain things, but my problem with V is the fact that it specifically misses where it should be more realistic, not only how much.

Ignoring the story:

  • Driving: GTA IV is obviously more realistic. I'm not saying that its vehicles handle exactly like real life vehicles do, but it's way closer to that than the too arcady handling in V. Even San Andreas had more realistic handling than V, and if you think it doesn't just because it's a very old game, you can watch videos or try it yourself. Which one is more enjoyable is subjective, but I can see most players agreeing with IV's (or even SA's in that matter) being more enjoyable.
  • Melee combat: GTA IV. V's superhuman combat doesn't even stand out compared to the combat in III and Vice City.
  • Gun fighting: GTA V is generally more realistic in this department, due to the fact that you can take NPCs down with just one bullet. But that's where realism should be balanced, because it makes shootouts very tedious, and almost pointless. Nonetheless, it tried too hard to the point where NPCs immediately die even with a bullet on the leg.
  • Euphoria: GTA IV, hands down. Just trying both of them for a few minutes makes it obvious.
  • Falling from the sky into the water: Since you can't survive that, GTA V is more realistic here. But then again, that takes off from the gameplay's value and freedom.
  • Physics: That's a big win for GTA IV.

GTA V is on of my favorites in the GTA franchise for it's brand of "over the top". While some (non-GTA) games go for crazy or nonsensical, GTA has always seemed more like a parody of reality that is ratcheted up to 11 out of 10.

It's not what I would call realistic but it does feel cleverly grounded in a way.

If you like more boring missions you'd love the merryweather heist setups... especially the docks mission.

In terms of over the top missions though, there's robbing the in-game equivalent of the federal reserve( I think?) and in one of the setups you do steal a train with a skycrane (vs it being done in a cutscene) so there's that..
