His abilities are pretty crazy. He's literally a wrecking ball with the roll mode and grappling hook. I'm glad they're adding some really unique heroes like this.

As someone who is a fan, a player, and a supporter of Overwatch and the Overwatch League, I've been thinking about something recently that I thought would be great to have a conversation about. How far is Overwatch going to go?

A little bit of an overview for those who don't know, Overwatch is a First-Person Shooter Team-Based Multiplayer game that came out on May 24, 2016. It pits two teams of 6 against each other in several different game types, and lets them choose between (at the time of writing this) 28 characters who all provide their own special abilities to the team. These game types are Assault, Escort, Hybrid, and Control. For those who know Overwatch, you can skip past my explanation of the game modes.

Assault puts the two teams in the position of Attackers and Defenders. The goal of the Attackers is to break past and takedown the Defenders in order to seize control of two designated areas by standing within the zones for  a certain amount of time, but only going after one specific point at a time. It's the job of the Defenders to keep the Attackers from capturing either of the two points by any means necessary, and can halt progress by standing in the zone and pushing the attackers out.

Escort puts the two teams in the position of Attackers and Defenders. When the round starts, the Attackers have a payload situated right outside their spawn that they have to escort from its starting point, through several checkpoints, and finally to the goal. The way they escort the payload is standing next to it, but not all teammates have to be near it. As long as there is at least 1 team member standing near the payload, it will move. The job of the Defenders is to keep the payload from moving at all. The way to do this is not only taking down the attackers, but also by stalling the payloads movement by standing near it. If an attacker and a defender are standing near the payload, it's considered being contested, and won't move until the defenders have been pushed off. Attackers must push the payload as far as they can, and Defenders must keep it from moving as much as possible.

Hybrid is a mix of Assault and Escort that puts the two teams in the position of Attackers and Defenders. The same rules of Assault and Escort apply, but only slightly different. The Attackers have to go and capture a point by standing in the zone for a certain amount of time. After capturing the zone, it does not open up the next zone to be captured, but rather, it gives access to a payload. Attackers now have to escort the payload as far as they can, preferably the goal. The Defenders best case scenario is to keep the attackers from capturing the zone that unlocks the payload. If defense of the zone fails, they must then do their best to keep the payload from moving.

Control is a bit different from the other three game modes. It's similar to the King of the Hill game type. When the round starts, the two teams are let out of spawn, and the control point starts its countdown to unlocking. The goal is to get to the control point and gain control of it by having at least one of your team members in the zone. Like Assault, the enemy team can halt progress by also having at least 1 team member in the zone. If one team stays in the zone uncontested long enough, they gain control of it, and a percentage meter begins to fill. Once it hits 100%, they win the round. The team that doesn't have control of the point can switch control if they can push the team that controls the point off of it long enough.

With all game modes, once time runs out with both teams fighting to keep the other from doing their job, the game will go into overtime. Overtime goes on forever until one team pushes the other away from what they're supposed to be  doing.

With that out of the way, let's get started.

Ever since Overwatch released in 2016, it has gone from being a casual fun-with-friends game to a major eSports game. At the time of writing this, it has only been a few days since the Overwatch League had its first championship game. I would like to say that I am so unbelievably proud of where Overwatch has gone. I'm glad to see that it has come so far, and congratulations to the winning team, the London Spitfire.

After the London Spitfire had won the final round in the finals, the words 'History Captured' appeared behind them, and that's the major catalyst for what drove me to write my essays about Overwatch. I do absolutely agree that it will go down in history as a major turning point for Overwatch and eSports, but I'm concerned with how long it's going to go. How many more championships are there going to be with Overwatch? Will it eventually be the biggest competitive game in the world? What is its peak, and how far can it go after it hit it?

The game shows no signs of slowing down, no doubt about that. With updates every now and again, as well as new heroes being added in occasionally, I believe it will stay fresh for years to come. The only thing that I can think of that might halt this games growth is a lack of a community, and I'm not sure that it will ever lack in community. The thing that runs through my head is "It can't last forever, can it?", and of course not, nothing lasts forever. I mean, will it last as long as it should?

If you read all the way through this article, no words can describe how much I appreciate you doing that. I'm open to advice on how to better structure articles, as well as tips on how to expand upon the main idea of my articles. I'm aware that this turned more into an explanation of the game rather than a fully fleshed out idea or thought. I would also like to apologize for this broken unstructured mess of an article.

It's not going anywhere. Even as some people leave it new players still come in.

Blizzard releasing 1 hero per quarter, unnecessary balance fixes, recycled game modes, listening to pros/top 500 streamers/one tricks for balancing is hurting this game. It’s definitely not going anywhere, however, it will eventually die out on consoles.

I think it's time for Round Two...

  1. Game is irrelevant due to fatigue.
  2. Players are leaving en masse.
  3. Blizzard's stock has dropped by half.
  4. Over 800 people were laid off.
  5. The CFO was fired after BlizzCon 2018.
  6. BlizzCon 2018 in general.
  7. No one cares about Overwatch League anymore.
  8. "Is this an out of season April Fools joke?"

Nice to know I live rent free in your head with cost of living being so high these days

No one stopped playing OW because of lack of lore you brainlet, they left because of poor balancing

The fact you necrobumped a dead ass thread for this is sad as f*ck on god

Pretty stupid argument to make. A few points:

* Blizzard has historically been bad at attempting to run the eSports scene for their own games. The only Blizzard game that has had a succesful and long lived 'eSports' scene is the original Starcraft and this is because Blizzard absolutely f*cking nothing to do with it. Blizzard tried running the Starcraft 2 'eSports' scene and colossally f*cked it up. Heroes of the Storm? Big f*cking lol. Hearthstone? No one really gives a sh*t about it, not even Blizzard. Also clear from day 1 that Blizzard attempting to control and run the OW scene was going to be a colossal failure. It's naturally been a sh*t show from the word go, but people were blinded by the stupid amounts of investment (a grand old con job) that they managed with team owners.

* The reasons why the game is 'dying' have f*ck and all to do with the competitive scene.

* If you genuinely believe that the game would be in a better place now with "muh lore" focus then you're honestly delusional. Their attempts in this department have failed to have the desired impact, hence why they don't waste more resources on it. Which is a good thing anyway, because the writers on the OW team are dare I say, objectively bad.

* Final point: Dota 2 and League of Legends. Look at those numbers. How much longer they've been around than OW. Both have crazy eSports scenes. Both don't really give a sh*t about "muh lore". In fact, Riot Games straight up torpedo'd their lore efforts into the trash can because most of their players didn't give a sh*t. Pretty much every other title there has f*ck all in the way of lore and is succeeding based off its gameplay strengths (or that new and fresh factor).

But. Muh. Lore. Or is it that wealth of R34 smut? Who knows when it comes to OW. ;)

Round two? My guy, this sh*t was over before round one. I stopped giving a f*ck about you (and this debate) last year. Sigh...

But like Audi said, nice to know I'm still profaning your subconscious all this time. Continue nutting at "lore" like Soldier: 76 being gay when that entire story was fabricated at the last second in an attempt to divert attention away from the OWL's "Ellie" fiasco, while Blizzard continues to shoot themselves in the foot by horrifically unraveling the balance of their prized game and losing attention to a free Battle Royale shooter that's hitting all the right notes.

Also, real smart using Twitch, a site famous for promoting multiplayer games with self-sustaining longevity to further your nonsense argument as to why "lack of lore" contributed to Overwatch's slow burn on the streaming service, you sad mf. Go ahead and reply to this, I'm only gonna check this thread again when someone else decides to link it to me in a few months.

Gamebot Defense Force Brigadier General Dirt, out.

I'd lowkey pay for a CSGO single player campaign though depending on who they got to write it

How many of you guys still play this? I've recently come back on PS4 and got totally addicted again. Generally stick with 1-2 heroes though, as I get too confused too easily trying to remember all the abilities. From the 'new' characters, although they're not very new anymore, I really enjoy playing as Baptiste. Probably the most fun Support hero.

Mystery Heroes is really fun as well, as it forces you outside of your comfort zone and playing people you usually wouldn't. I'm actually a lot better at some heroes than I originally thought.

I kind of play this on and off with a friend sometimes, usually when we get bored of other games we've been playing. The workshop was a pretty great addition that gives the game more longevity. Now they just need to add a map editor.

I actually haven't tried the custom games yet, although I've noticed the server browser at the side. I might have to check some of those out next time I go on.
