Is attractiveness more Objective/Subjective?

This is something I've been thinking about. Of course it has to be somewhat subjective or people wouldn't have certain types, and also the vast majority of people are attracted to the opposite sex.

Yet young people are objectively more attractive than older people. Then again some people actually like older people, which has to be somewhat subjective.

You just answered your own thread.

This should've been asked in the "Have a Question" thread instead.

I didn't think about that actually, sorry. :colgate:

This would have been good for the questions thread, Xyn is right. I've even posted questions in that thread recently and should have thought about it.

I'm kind of an airhead. :/

I'd say it's almost completely subjective.

How can it be anything but subjective?

How can it be anything but subjective?

Because sometimes, it's completely objective.

Why do attractive people tend to be more attractive to everyone else? I see this all the time, and in magazines.

Humans are attracted to our own species objectively, but there are cases where that isn't true.

So I think it might be both, but really can't decide for myself is attraction is more scientific or not.

Shut up Tali. Like I told you before if I didn't have the option, I would have let the Geth make you extinct.

I'd say there are a few standards of beauty that are almost universally agreed upon. You don't see too many people who go after people with really bad skin, bad teeth, etc for example. But maybe that just falls under the category of personal hygiene. You can have whatever set of features or body type, but if you stink like sh*t and generally look like a wreck, then nobody's going to be interested in that. Sober, anyway.

And even though it's still subjective, there are certain features that are considered more/less attractive by general consensus. Whether that's because of cultural norms, fashion or whatever else is another topic entirely though. But yeah, I'd say it's ultimately subjective. :p

It's all subjective when it comes to the conscious mind. What you mean by objective is the media and pop culture pandering to the subjective standards of attractiveness based on what's trending.

Whatever the trend is for being attractive (subjective) is in the mainstream at the moment, to the point where it seems objective and normal for people to find such things attractive. There's still many different subjective views of what people find attractive, but the mainstream seems to go with only one of the views; what's trending.

And about humans objectively being attracted to each other, that's true. Humans are practically programmed to find each other attractive, but the different tastes and preferences in what they find attractive are subjective.

However, humans tend to be influenced by their surroundings and other people in terms of what they like and don't like.

I'm speaking out of my ass here.

No you make perfect sense.

Magazine example I gave is a little more fuzzy when it comes to pop culture and environment.

Younger, Physically Fit, Hygenic, Opposite Sex are objectively more attractive to the majority of people.

But that isn't always the case with a every single person which confuses me.

If you want to know if someone is attractive, ask yourself if you would waltz across texas with that person.

Culture and environment is subjective, younger/athletic people being more attractive is objective.

I've heard "eye of the beholder" before, and it's 100% true..... but why are certain people beholded more attractive than others? Seems kinda objective is all.

if you did. Shepard would have you and your ever so important sister extinct :D

I'd just go though another suicide mission all over again, just to make sure you won't ever be of concern.

*is it bad that I'm actually imagining Tali and Miranda having this argument*

The only way we can determine this is if we raise thousands of babies in complete isolation, maybe teaching them via robots or something so they're not feral little sh*ts, and then upon releasing them into the world when they come of age, see what they trend toward.

So yeah, lets kidnap some babies and test this out.
