Convince Me Whether or Not to Get V on Both PS4 & PC

  1. 1. Which GTA Version(s) Should I Buy?

    • Get it on next-gen console now, and get it again on PC in 6 to 12 months
      60
    • Get it on PC in January, and don't bother with console at all

TL;DR see the poll above and vote. Thanks.

I'm seeking your opinions. I own GTA V on last-gen console. I have the game on PS3 and I own a PS4, but my situation could apply to Xbox as well. I will be getting one (or more) of the upgraded versions of the game, and transferring my Online progress to whatever new version I buy first. Also, I will be getting the PC version sooner or later regardless. I've been making GTA mods for years, and I've been looking forward to doing so with V since it was first announced long ago. This is not a PC vs. console nor a Playstation vs XBOX discussion.

My conundrum is thus. Do I:

  • Upgrade to next-gen console now, transferring my Online progress to it? Later, maybe a year or so, buy the PC version at a hopefully reduced price, and when there's lots of mods.
  • Upgrade (and transfer Online progress) directly to PC, foregoing the next-gen console version entirely?
Originally, I had planned to get only the PC version. Now that the new version's hype train is running, I'm getting antsy. As I see it, here's the pros & cons of choosing option #1, getting it on both next-gen console and PC:

Pro:

  • Get to play the updated version 10 weeks earlier.
  • Play with more of my friends. I have more friends on console than I do on PC.
  • A perceived situation of less multiplayer hacking compared to PC. Maybe it's true, maybe not, but that's my perception.
  • Wireless controller support without third-party software or needing to buy another controller. I'm a controller user on PC. I do have a wired 360 controller for use with my PC, I could buy a wireless 360 one, and I can use my DS4 on PC with DS4Windows, but no solution is as convenient as the console's included controller.
  • Not being handicapped against other Online players while using a controller. I'm not skilled at using a keyboard & mouse, so I'd be at a disadvantage in firefights against many PC players.
Con:
  • Cost. Even if I got a great deal on a third (!) copy, it'd be more than if I only bought it twice.
  • Reduced value/replayability. I've already finished the single player story twice on PS3, and likely will do so once again on one of the upgraded versions. I can't imagine finishing it on all three platforms. As far as Online goes, I'd be starting out from Level 0. Some might take that as a plus, but I'd see it as having to grind up again. Either way, I wouldn't have nearly as much play time on PC than I otherwise would.
  • Delayed access to PC's advantages (performance, modding, better capture, etc.). Even if I got the PC version 6 months after the PS4 version, that's 16 weeks later than the PC version's release. I'd be 'missing out" during that time.
  • Online console play requires a paid account (PS+ or XBL Gold), and is susceptible to PSN or XBL outages. That's not to say that Rockstar's own servers/Social Club can't go down, but that could affect any platform.
Opinions? Whether you're upgrading or getting V for the first time, what version(s) are you getting and why?

EDIT:

So, yeah. Not only did I pop for the PS4 version, I pre-ordered it. Haters gonna hate.

Wait it out. According to rumors, the PC version might include a third-party DRM known as "Denuvo" which could potentially restrict mods, and require an internet connection. If you plan to get it on PC, I would wait a couple weeks to make sure that trusted reviewers can slap on the seal of approval.

With the console version, you basically know what you're getting. Your friends are on next gen, it seems to get the spotlight from Rockstar (for some reason.) and, if you're going the PS4 route, could potentially get some exclusive content.

That being said, the PC version will have miles more content than the exclusive stuff you're getting on the PS4, but, as said above, Denuvo could potentially prevent that.

It's all a matter of your budget. If you absolutely need to play GTA V, get the console version. Your friends are there, the PS4 will get some exclusive content, and you know what you're getting out of the box.

If you want to get the PC version as well, wait a couple weeks to make sure it is a good game that is optimized for the platform, and if it is able to be modded.

I'll make this easy.

1. Do you want a PS4 and V? If yes, go to 3. If no, go to 2.

2. Do you want V for PC? If yes, go to 3. If no, go to 4.

3. Buy these things.

4. Do not buy these things.

The fact that you're even considering it means you want to do it. So do it.

Yeah, that's not happening. R* loves the modding community.

What's a DRM?

If that's true they will see what happens. EA also tried it with a required internet connection with Sim City and they ruined their reputation for that series a lot. It just doesn't work like this, even though company's are always trying it. I just hope there aren't enough V fans then out there who will buy it anyway, if online connection is really necessary.

And to the thread question ... you are a fool, if you are buying it for both. Just wait. It's not that long anymore. Either that or buy it for PS. But never for both.

It's just a rumor, and since one of Denuvo's partners on their website is "Rockstar Games", it could potentially potentially restrict mods. It's still not confirmed at this point.

Buy both of em, like I'll do. YOLO, especially when you work a lot but get paid like you deserve.

Guaranteed to run great with no errors, driver updates, or DRM on PS4. Pop it in, sit, play.

Tough decision and I am in a similar position, myself. Basically, I will soon have enough money to get a console and I have been planning to get the PS4 for some time. It is possible to get a bundle, so a console plus a game or two, for the same price as the console alone. In other words, I have the option to buy GTAV and the PS4 for the price of a PS4. Sounds like a good deal to me, personally, and I will probably go for it. It remains to be seen, though.

The one thing I am wondering about is whether it's possible to transfer the GTAO stats from next-gen to PC if you haven't played Online on the previous generation. Probably not.

That's another thing that terrorized my GTA gaming on PC.

THIS!

PC. I think it's rather dumb to buy a PS4 and GTA V just because you have to wait longer for the PC version.

I'm def. Getting it within the next year. FPS, return of classic cars. More trev switch scenarios. More added radio content.

Imo I would buy it on PS4 first, play the sh*t out of it with all the new content. Then get it on PC after (maybe wait for a discount for a while if you're burnt out from the game). The PS4 apparantly may get exclusive stuff (most likely timed) so it's something to consider and you have your console friends to play with. The PC version will be good for higher than 30FPS and a crap ton of mods.

Do what you feel is right, but I wouldn't transfer your GTA: Online progress to PC if I was you. You will have the advantage on PS4 (weapons etc) but not on PC, with a mouse all weapons will pretty much feel the same as you will only be getting headshots anyway (if you're good with a mouse). Plus there will be crazy amount of mods on PC and you don't want to get your long time progress banned by R* for having a bad mod installed, whereas having a new character will reduce the risk.

So:

-Get it on PS4 first, transferring your GTA: Onliine progress.

-Then get on PC, maybe on sale.

I already own the PS4 console and a decent PC. It is rather dumb to buy the game a second and third time, but if I were to buy the PC version later, I'd wait for a sale.

I think it's stupid to buy it on PS4 just because you're impatient. But if you have friends who play on consoles, it would make sense.

Oh go on buy it, go on! go ooon!!! it's really good. You'll enjoy it, unless you're one of them people who will look at it only trying to spot the game breaking jaggies, because jaggies are so horrible. If not though, buy it, go on buy it!

I'm not usually a person who sides with the PC master race (Yeah, they are either trolling or totally obnoxious) but the best version would definitely be the PC version (Depending on your specs)

1. Mod support (hopefully that DRM rumor isn't true)

2. Better graphics (finer textures and it could go up to 4K)

3. A video editor that could make some pretty epic GTA Movies.

4. Online is totally FREE (no paying monthly to access online bullsh*t)

but there are cons.

1. Performance totally dependent on your rig. (the reasons I stick to consoles mostly, is that you just have to pick up and play and none of that maintenance and tech support bullsh*t)

2. PC ports usually are more glitchier than console counterparts. (if you have a crappy setup, you will always be paranoid about stability)

3. Fear of poor optimization. (poor performance despite PC's power)

4. And of course, it's delayed till January.

But as I said, I'm leaning towards the PC version. If you already own the last gen version, then the new gen version will play the same but just look prettier (and of course the FPS camera). But with PC, it would be a new experience. Shooting is easier with a mouse and with mods, your fun would be endless. (And of course, free online.)

Just get a next gen console and get both versions.

There's a serious amount of good games coming, other than GTA and especially PlayStation had really opened up to smaller indie games. I haven't really followed xbox but I'm sure you'll get more than your money's worth out of that too.

I already have a next-gen console. I got a PS4 on day one, actually.

Can PC players work controllers then? :O

I've used consoles since the Atari 2600, and only started gaming on PC within the last decade, so I'm much more accustomed to controllers. I've tried using a keyboard + mouse, but I haven't gotten the hang of it.

Actually, that brings up a good point that I hadn't considered. Using a controller on PC in multiplayer, I'd be at a disadvantage going up against skilled keyboard/mouse users in a firefight.

Oh must've misread then, sorry.

But whats the point in waiting then, actually? Unless you're like into masochism or something (which is perfectly fine).

Money, basically. I've already bought it on PS3, and I'll be buying it on PC sooner or later. Buting it three times? That might be a bit much.

On the other hand, I'm no stranger to owning GTA on multiple platforms. I have IV & EFLC on PS3 & PC, and SA on PS2 & PS3.

By January GTA should still get a good price if you trade it in. That way you end up paying maybe 30 bucks to be able to spend your Christmas with V.V

Just get both, trade in your console copy and put it towards the PC version when it releases if you are too worried about money.
