Grand Theft Auto III Pre-Release Discussion

Recommended Posts

I made this quick video because I wanted to show more people interested in 3's beta

who may not realize a key vehicle that seems to be missing

from a lot of Beta MODS and discussions around the

1st trailer until later beta stages with the "Diablo Car".
Hope ya'll are doing well!
Thanks!

Nice spotting!

I had a random thought about Obbe. He seems to like reminiscing on his time working on the old GTAs, maybe he could be the key to figuring out if a "beta build" could ever surface.

I always thought this was a placeholder for until they've finished the actual Diablo Stallion model.

Wow, nice find!

Also this seems to confirm that theory I had a few pages back, that the "Diablo Infernus" never existed.

Yeah, it was around from the 1st trailer, so it was always a thing. Just always overlooked or mistaken as a "beta" stallion car color. I think, they took the color combo idea and used it for the Yardie Lobo for the final color as they had the Yardie lobo later on in the game as a blue with tan roof. R* likely changed it to red once they changed they Cartel Cruiser from BLACK to the same blue as the beta Yardie Lobo. They seem to like the yellow roofs though and kept them for the blue colors of the Stallion in the final.

Biggest tell tail sign is the Diablo has Limo tinted windows all around like the OG mafia sentinel.

The shade of red is also not used for any beta civilian stallions as listed below. This red matches the color of the cheetah in the 2nd trailer that sits in Staunton Island while Claude fires a shot.

The colors for beta Stallion were:
All 8 to show that this car is 100% a Diablo "car"(Stallion) and not a civilian Stallion.

a Strawberry red with a Tan roof
a Hot orange/red with a Tan roof

a Lemon Yellow with a Teal roof

a Mellow yellow with a Brown roof
a faded strawberry red with a brown roof

Orange with a black roof

a Dark navy blue with a faded white roof

a Bright vibrant blue with a faded white roof

August / German trailer era -

Dark navy blue/ offwhite, dirty roof

Red #14 BUT it's the color code of VC #14- 3 and VC, they had the same car color codes for the most part but a few colors in VC were more vibrant than 3.  colors #14, 21, 36, 50 etc are all effected.  They were all way more pronounced which makes sense since paint fades and it's 86-01.

Green like the SA sabre green. Probably  #45 or 46

I could list almost all the changes for most vehicles lol.  I love the beta colors so I pay attention to it and color match

Has this been mentioned before other than the pole divider in front of Luigi's ally? -Stop in centre the red marker."-
Also, note that it's not the American way they spell "center" for English language. So, that's cool to see! We have seen the red arrows, but not the red marker before. image.png.360fea35345765316fb24c07529b174c.png

I imagine Salvatore and cohort wouldve had a hard time getting around it and were maybe getting stuck during Sayonara Salvatore.

i know there's got to be one person that has an e3 build but hasnt ripped it yet. hopefully one day we finally get to play that build... man

Really? Haven't heard of it yet. Who? Or where was that mentioned?

ive talked to some people that said they had those builds back BEFORE the game released, they have no clue where those builds are now, they're obviously not vanished into thin air, they must be lingering somewhere, i highly doubt rockstar has every single possible copy, it's just impossible, hopefully one day someone will actually leak it out. just like the san andreas xbox debug build, there's definitely builds out there that either someone has and hasn't released, or they are somewhere hidden in a box or somewhere that they've not checked out yet. fingers crossed

I'm not sure whether this is beta content or just an oversight, but recently I've been playing the game with this mission loader mod, and noticed something interesting during "A Drop in the Ocean".

During the mission you have to collect six packages, and under normal circumstances you get +1 wanted level for picking up each one... except the last one, because you unlock SSV and the ability to get six star wanted level after you complete the mission.

However, if you replay the mission after you have already unlocked SSV, you do get a six star wanted level after picking up the 6th package.
So, could it be that they intended the player to get a six star wanted level for the first time during the mission, instead of after completing it?

Part of me wants to believe it could be an oversight, but it isn't out of the realm for Rockstar to make missions to introduce wanted levels, so a mission that introduces you to a 6 star wanted level, the highest in the game, just makes sense.

Dang I hate misinformation.

I still think it's likely it was something to do with the war CJ started because...well the timing and the fact that was the previous game

Oldest mention I could find from a quick google

https://worthplaying.com/article/2005/10/1/news/27864-gta-liberty-city-stories-psp-gets-multiplayer-screens-trailer/

Same website even earlier. Where did they get it from

I've got to say I stand corrected, I just didn't have enough backing at the time.

There's also this link: https://www.ign.com/articles/2005/09/10/gta-liberty-city-stories-2

Considering this, I will add all the mentions back. I'm sorry for the confusion.

Still interesting. Rather than 'a made man' as everyone has been repeating for years the oldest source actually straight up says 'Mob Boss'. Something big happened in the aftermath of San Andreas(I have a seperate post on that, but TLDR due to a ton of little details the game ends in 1993. When it switches from 1992-1993 is unclear, other than it's sometime before Riot and sometime after 555 We Tip.)

GTA LCS starts in May 1998 according to the website and seemingly in-game stuff(even if the manual is weird), I know 4 years isn't exact, but something happened probably between late 1993 and early 1994, so probably within 6-9 months of SA ending. That to me(plus again, first game made after SA) confirms it was something to do with the gang war CJ ignited by killing Johnny Sindacco and robbing Caligulas. We get a few clues early in the game and on the website(JD OToole was involved somehow), but I don't know the specifics exactly other than it was a high ranking Mob Boss in either the Forelli or Sindacco family killed as a favor for Salvatore.

Anyone unaccounted for?

Interesting theory, but where did you get the thing about San Andreas switching from 1992 to 1993 exactly between those two missions?

Music. OG Loc’s only album released in 1992 and the radio broadcast about it occurs once you get to San Fierro. Mad Dogg’s comeback album is 1993 and by the time of Riot it’s out regardless of how you did the prior mission order.

Thanks website. (My pet theory is 4 Dragons opened on Chinese New Year personally)

(Also there's a line in one of Toreno's missions that implies Bill Clinton is either in office or has won the election, which helps narrow it down. The 3D era had the IRL presidents, there's a GTA III website blurb mentioning George Bush in Liberty City)

Random thought. The blue and white police car (Chevrolet Caprice) was in production until 1996. PD's still used them of course until they fazed them out by the early 2000's. You still saw them till like 2001 but the main carp by then was a Ford. Ford already had all white vehicles with blue livery in the fleets by this time. Of course I am sure some earlier 90's fords had some blue and white livery but not as common as the caprice. Ford was becoming even more prominent with the NYPD.  Even till this day, NYC has the white and blue livery. For 96 and onward though, when the newer cars began joining fleets, ALL were being painted fully white with blue livery. Some 96 Caprice's did have white and blue livery like Ford. However, Police fleets by 2001 were mostly driving Ford Crown Vic's as the most common and 1999-2000 Chevy Impalas with this all white with blue livery. ,  < what GTA 4's vehicles and liveries are.
Do we know for a fact GTA3 is based in 2001 and not 1999 like GTA2? I mean that blue and white Chevy Caprice is in the intro for GTA2. I just thought of it because the reason for the cop car livery change, to me, makes no sense if people mostly saw white and blue livery by the time of 9/11 and if they wanted it to be true to 2001, white with the blue would be accurate.  The LCPD logo is enough without the livery or color to be a hint at "NYPD" or New York.

Yeah we know, there’s a website with monthly news articles. The game starts the day it was released

cant remember

I think what's going on there is the delay when the game is conceptualized and released.

It's even more apparent in GTA4, taking place in 2008 lore-wise but in the game it looks like it's supposed to be 2005 tops

Idk hoss, I'd say it's supposed to take place more in 2007 (the OG release date before the delay to April 2008) than 2005. Especially so considering that, for example, some of the cars were built past 2005, some songs were past 2005, etc. etc. and also the police database literally lists things dating to 2008 lol

Yeah there's some anachronisms/inconsistencies here and there like the type of police car being a little older than their irl counterpart, dates regarding how long ago the ambush that killed Niko's squad was, etc. but I don't see any empirical evidence to imply that IV takes place before the date it's implied to be set in.

Even GTA V feels very 2010/2011-ish, as opposed to 2013. That was pretty apparent back when the game released, but has sort of been lost to the burring of time.

A lot of people in the VI mapping thread have even pointed out that Vice City will be dated by about a decade by the time the game releases.
