They don't even explain where it came from other than its "never before seen artwork". Not to play the sceptic but Its kind of weird. The art style does look spot on but where did it come from? The GDD is printed in black and white

I know I'm beating a dead horse here, but, again; I feel the need to point out the fact that the design document will never shared in its entirely is a still a slap in the face to the community who have been sifting through old web-pages, magazines and press material for well-over a decade now to try and paint a more cohesive picture of what one of our favourite game's development was like. However, what I think is more important is the preservation of video game history aspect.

 

We waited years after that auction ended, only to have it be condensed into a two-hour video exclusively for one YouTube channel. While yes, the video was well-produced, crammed in heaps of information and no doubt took a long time to produce, the issue still stands that this is the only source. 

 

From a preservation standpoint, let's put things into perspective. The document is merely paper. Paper degrades, paper can easily be destroyed (water, fire, literally just exposure to oxygen). With the knowledge that particular pages have been scanned (as per the GTASeries video), we know that a partial, or a full-copy does exist. The problem is, hard-drives fail. CDs fail, tapes fail, passwords get forgotten, and sometimes things just get lost. Any media is prone to failure and there is a genuine risk that this document could be lost to time, and I don't think anyone in this thread would want that to happen.

 

Simply put, we cannot rely on a single video, hosted on a single media-sharing platform, by a single content-creator to be a secure method of preserving video game history. (Not to mention, you cannot cover a massive document like that in just a two hour video. Things would have been missed, that cannot be denied, and as someone who's just as obsessive about understanding and discovering information regarding beta / alpha builds of GTA titles as anyone else here, it kinda stings.)

 

Of course, I do understand that a private transaction is a private transaction. There's no obligation on the buyer's end to share the document whatsoever, but to those in posession of the scanned document, or even the physical document, please consider the points I raised.

 

That's all, I guess. I don't mean to offend anyone, I just feel disappointed by how the situation was handled.

Yeah, Rockstar. Imo 90% of the doc was shown in their video, while 10% still remains a mystery..

In gta 3 their was a cut feature where in if you were to commit a crime let's say you killed a ped near another ped that other ped would go to the nearest payphone and call 911 you can still make this feature in game work via mods

Would love to see some HQ scans of that article.

 

Advance must have started conceptualisation at around this point in III's development, the HUD font and colours are a dead giveaway.

I think you're right. This thread also says that it was reported as far back as May 2001, which fits since those pics are definitely after E3.

The 2nd one with the cop cars appears on the back cover of the PS2 release. In fact, that's one if the images they doctored to "fix" the police car colors after 9/11.

 

Edit: I just checked and it turns out I'm totally wrong about this; no clue where I got that idea from! I swear I remember seeing it printed somewhere.

The Landstalker doesn't have an unusual colour scheme. Before they massacred most of the cars with bodymaps, the cars looked more natural and even better than what we got now. 

The spoilers and the overall look of  Landstalker look like your generic Toyota/Mitsubishi cars from late 90's,early 2000's.

In the final version, because of the horror that is the body64 texture, the spoilers don't have the original silver texture, instead they are leaning more towards black.

Another thing that makes me wonder is why did they massacre the police car that much. Its final scheme looks like a 5 year old was given crayons and just messed around there. They could have kept the scheme and change the color to black, like they did in LCS.

Not sure if it's been posted before, but there's a myriad of unused ambient music loops in the game files, one or two of them being muffled loops from GTA 1/2 songs. Pretty interesting stuff.

Isn't one of them from the Police Ball mission and another from that party in the docks?

Just noticed that there is an unused line for The Fuzz Ball in the GXT.

 

[LM5_A] {Luigi} The Policeman's Ball is being held at the old school hall near the Callahan Bridge

[LM5_B] {luigi} and they'll be looking for some 'old school' action.

[LM5_C] {Luigi} Now I got girls all over town walking the streets.

[LM5_D] {luigi} Get'em to the ball they'll make a bundle.

[LM5_1] ~g~You pack these ladies too tight, they gonna bruise!

~g~Drop these girls off first, then come back for more.

[LM5_2] ~r~One of Luigi's girls is bodybag meat!

[LM5_3] ~g~You need a car!

[LM5_4] ~g~Pick up the girls working St. Marks.

[LM5_5] ~g~Take the girls to the Fuzz Ball!

 

All of these lines are bundled together in the mobile GXT txt. The additions to the missions are deeper in the file, depending on the timeframe things got changed.

 

[LM5_8] ~g~Girls working the Ball: ~1~

This line is right after the ones above, but it's pretty late because there is a LM5_7 that precedes it but is deeper in the file. It's also unused and was likely meant to be used for debugging purposes.

 

[LM5_E] {Luigi} Get as many of them as you can before the cops drink away their green.

The last cutscene line, deeper in the file.

 

[LM5_7] ~g~Less than four girls working the ~p~Fuzz Ball~g~ and Luigi won't be happy!

The line I mentioned earlier, which is more below the one above.

 

 

 

So at one point, they used the mission from the Doc as an idea but had you drive to Saint Marks instead, and the intro cutscene was more like in final, meaning no pagers et al.

 

 

 

EDIT: The shopkeeper cutscene in Shima was ingame at one point.

not pre release but i dont know where to put it. the japanese ps2 manual is in full colour which is kind of cool. I can post the rest later maybe if I remember.
