So I've been looking into the cut multiplayer modes lately, and I think I found some good ideas for what they were likely supossed to be.

Deatmatch and Team Deathmatch are classics, but not much is known about the Stealth variants. Maybe they were supossed to act more like the other FPS games, with no map and no names? In LCS/VCS and CTW, the players are always shown on the radar and in the Stories games they had their names and an arrow above them, so those might've been disabled.

Here's an interesting thing related to Stash the Cash. Chinatown Wars has this mode called "Stash Dash", where it's stated in the description that you have to stash the cash. This is probably the closest thing we will ever know about this mode. Basically you had to steal a vehicle with money and deliver it somewhere, and depending on the vehicle health, you'd get a specific ammount of money. The other players would have to steal this vehicle. Not sure if they had their own drop off location, though, as I never played this mode. If a specific ammount of money was collected, the player would win. LCS also has a similar mode called "The Wedding List", where it's a free-for-all and several cars are on the map, so if this mode was based on the CTW variant, it could've been a team mode. Not sure. What are your thoughts on this?

(video)

Capture The Flag is also a classic. It's been featured in many MP games from the time, like Half Life, TFC, Unreal, etc.

Rat Race has a definition on Wikipedia. Judging by this, it was probably like Bling Bling Scramble, where you'd have to go through checkpoints and achieve a certain score. No clue how it really played, though, but it doesn't sound like it was an average race.

Domination could've been based on the Domination mode from Unreal Tournament 1999. In this mode, there are 2 teams, and each team has to take over a control point. For each control point, each 5 seconds the team receives a point, and if a certain point limit was achieved, said team wins. Since the other modes, aside from STC and Rat Race, are really generic, it's safe to assume Domination was also generic.

As for the maps, it's safe to assume not all of them supported all the modes. I can't see Rat Race happening in The Sewer or in The Tower, for example. Stash the Cash could work but without cars it'd be some kind of Capture the Flag.

To add to that, if you open the game's executable in Notepad it's possible to find this bunch of raw code related to multiplayer:

Another interesting fact: See this BETA screenshot?

ueNKmh1.jpg

Notice the weirdly dumbed down dark-blue tone of the LCPD cruiser's primary body color compared to the earlier BETA screenshots depicting the cop car. Did R* try to change the tone of it's color after 9/11?
Apparently, if you "recreate" the BETA model and set it's primary body color to ID #53, the result is pretty similar to, if not the same as, the BETA screenshot above:

nY1KYYc.png

I'm pretty sure that it's not the color being different. That looks like the weird reflection map they used in later builds, also seen doing crazy f*ckery in this screenshot:

Fun stuff: Remember the "Silence The Sneak" mission?

71gw64A.gif

Apparently, Ray says it's "SOME apartment behind the carpark", he doesn't say exactly which one would it be.
Investigating the said spot, it turns out there's another building behind the Newport carpark just above 8-Ball's bomb shop with an open window (but nothing inside it)!

Spoiler

VmcSjjR.png
Cmc2Hmk.png
p2qBLgT.png
LrnHQ20.png

While the safehouse model is defined and placed on the map through the "comNbtm.ide" and "comNbtm.ipl" files, respectively, the mission still loads it in the beginning of it's code (even in the final game):

// ******************************************END OF CUTSCENE********************************

REQUEST_MODEL safehouse

ADD_BLIP_FOR_COORD 378.0 -443.2 29.9 ray1_blip

PRINT_NOW RM1_1 5000 1 //"Check out the witness protection house."

Conversely, the model is unloaded in the mission cleanup list at the end too, as if it was a mission-exclusive object that would appear just in this mission and never again:

MARK_MODEL_AS_NO_LONGER_NEEDED PED_LI_MAN2
MARK_MODEL_AS_NO_LONGER_NEEDED CAR_SENTINEL
MARK_MODEL_AS_NO_LONGER_NEEDED safehouse

Conclusion?... Alright, think about it:

Was there a safehouse location randomizer in the mission's old version that would pick from the two possible spots (unused window/used window) and Claude would have to find the right one and then attack it?
Was this unused apartment window meant to be used in "Waka-Gashira Wipeout!" for sniping Kenji? What are your thoughts?

Did a bit of Carcol edits to match E3-to German trailer.  I have though gone through tons of BETA images back and forth and back and forth to get these as close as possible thus far to images/ trailers seen.

Any more colors or crits are welcome!

I really think you should make a thread in the Mod Showroom for this, as it's a mod and not a discovery. Also for the love of god use spoilers 😛

This post isn't a BETA post, but rather a "fact check" type of post. It is about Filip's "original" BETA files. With all the information revealed in the last few years, it's safe to say they are FAKE in a more complete manner. MattJ did already talk about the files being fake, but there are some other points that can be addressed.

So MattJ has shown the story behind the supossed "build" and says that the handling is basically 1:1 with the PS2 version. To add more to this, we have the actual vehicles with their internal names that were used in late 2000 until somewhere in 2001, and they have different names to what Filip has in his file. The file that contains these is vehicles.dff from the mobile port, which weights like 8.5 MBs. If it's as he claims that they are from 1999, why doesn't it have these names? Why does it have cars that weren't present at the time, like Rumpo, Yankee, all gang cars? Unless he modified them, but at this point why does it say that it was last modified on 10th December 1999, which is the exact same date the file was created according to the original handling file?

As for his SFX, it doesn't even have the PS2 layout where there are 7 SET folders with several sfx archives inside. His one is just the PC/Mobile one, where the game only uses one archive. Thanks to an earlier version of this wonderful tool, I was able to extract the files with their actual names (which were left inside the mobile port). Ofcourse this specific SFX archive exported nicely with the namings, because it isn't even for the PS2, their main development system at the time. There is no "Alright drop the weapon" line that the cops said in a bunch of clips, instead being the final line "Alright drop down". There is no "I designed the PS2" line that was used only in the 1.40 PAL version, instead it is "Stripe summeeer" used twice. The only stuff I could find (which is also mentioned on his video description) are 2 panic lines, which are taken from GTA 2, later saying in a trailer video that it's unconfirmed whether they were used or not, despite his files having one of the lines. But yet again, at this point why not just reveal they are fake?

Why am I saying that? Because his video says these files are "supossedly" real, and the drive link was last updated 1.5 years ago. His timecyc video doesn't even link the timecyc anymore, but you can still find it on his forum threads. The last modified date says 16th September 2000, which is clearly bullsh*t because we know those cartoony game pics are made from 16th October 2000 onwards until sometime early 2001. For someone that was monkeying on "posting only new stuff", he surely posted worse stuff, and in some cases even managed to not see the "new" content he desired (he has a scan of the magazine with that Staunton render I posted a while ago, ofcourse he didn't post about it otherwise it'd be a decade old info).

In conclusion, his stuff is fake and you should consider it a mod specific of its time.

In other news, GTA Series Videos will make a new BETA Hot Topic video, this time about GTA 3. Pretty exciting!

Maybe they'll finally go over that GTA 3 design document they supposedly bought f*cking ages ago at this point?

I added a section on TCRF showing all the leftover vehicles neatly compared to their final counterparts:

Edit: Someone else reshuffled things a bit, you can find it here now: https://tcrf.net/Grand_Theft_Auto_III/Unused_Models#Early_Vehicle_Models

Heh, I can never stay away for too long it seems. Documenting everything there is to know about this game is a mighty and never-ending quest.

I've noticed the Sanny Builder opcode database says there's a deprecated opcode in III called "SET_PLAYER_HOOKER" (0x043E), which (as the description says) would set a specified mission actor to behave like any random ped with the prostitute pedtype to the player, effectively allowing Claude to... do stuff with that ped.

Looking through my old finds from the leaked SCM source on the mobile port, there are these two unused variables in the source code for "The Exchange" mission:

VAR_INT shaggin_waggin maria_prossie

AFAIK "shagging" is a slang term for two people... doing stuff inconspicuously, and since using the prostitute pedtype directly on a mission actor doesn't work at all, the opcode 043E would've come into play with the "maria_prossie" actor specified in it's parameters.

So what was the plan here? Delete the actual Maria, put Claude in some car, "recreate" Maria as a prostitute, use the now-dud opcode on her to "whore"-ify her and then teleport her into Claude's car for... "shaggin_waggin" during the credits? Maybe that was where Maria was originally meant to give a really long and annoying speech before Claude would eventually shut her up permanently with a gun? It kinda makes slight sense in the sense that listening to the news report on the radio in a car fits the game's ending cutscene more.

By the way, the unused subtitles for the longer, scrapped parts of Maria's speech during the credits imply that she would talk about her sister and her two kids coming to stay because of her sister's husband while... doing stuff with Claude.

I don't understand why people still gotta wrote beta in all uppercase lmao

Anyway, everything GTASeriesVideos uploaded is almost something we've already know since forever, Vadim M is way better at covering that stuff.

To be honest, it really rubbed me the wrong way that they kept it to themselves and didn't immediately scan it and release it.

In my opinion, information like that needs to be shared so we can all peruse through it, not kept among a select few.

Despite the posterity of freely available information, I understand the mindset of keeping something like that for yourself, because yknow the mystery and intrigue of it keeps the value of it up if you wanna use it as an asset instead of a book. What annoys me is the attitude they had about it, something to the effect of openly admitting to having won the ebay auction and getting pissy when people asked about it. Like bruh either share it or don't even mention you bought it in the first place lol

Makes you wonder what their intention for it even was. Are they just gatekeeping for the sake of gatekeeping, or do they truly intend on releasing it? (albeit, likely to capitalise off of it) Either way, it's suspect and goes against what the community wanted.

It's quite literally the holy grail of GTA III beta information, yet it's being held captive by supposed community figureheads who seem to care more about their pride than the actual community. sh*tty all around.

Just finished watching it and I gotta say that video was kind of a slog towards the end, I feel like it would have been better if they just released the document and had a quicker summary about it, but gotta keep those engagement numbers up I guess. Still good information though.

Small things to note:

-Toshiro's Skyscrapper is actually Love's building. Even internally you can still find out that it's named after Toshiro.

-Swat the SWAT wasn't a removed mission but rather it was Decoy, also given by Love in final.

-Love's missions, outside Waka-Gashira Wipeout, were all planned all along.

-Ray's missions match 1:1 to the descriptions from the mission sources from mobile, though they give out more details in the doc.

-Low Rider Race and Gangcar Roundup are also the same.

-Kenji still has a GXT line for being busy, named KENSGO, which matches perfectly with the newest info, as the Suburban island was unlocked during one of Toshiro's missions.

-That Tag mode was in GTA 2. In fact, I belive those modes were all from GTA 2.

-It's said that Toni looks like Pesci for his second artwork. His ingame model and render makes him look a lot like Big Pussy from The Sopranos.
-The Corporate H.Q. building that was mentioned in the video is definitely the AMCO building that can be seen in final. It even has a car park. They probably just didn't know what corporation to use.

I'll edit this post if I find more stuff to point out.

Screenshot_20211008-195809_YouTube.jpgIt's quite interesting how this guy, Major Hale, got a complete artwork while Toshiro never got one

Plus, he was barely even mentioned in the document

Speaking of Hale, in some renders you can actually see Phil with 2 arms. Maybe they used this design for Hale at one point before remaking the artwork?

kHnr5ac.jpg

His artwork does look different in terms of style, too. Phil seems more... pointy.
