Have you noticed how Donald Love's rooftop garden in III is Japanese-themed yet he's American? Apparently, the model names for Donald's skyscraper still point to someone else...

Donald's rooftop garden model is named "tshrorckgrdn" and the alpha object group model associated with it is named "tshrorckgrdn_alfas".
Also, Donald's skyscraper model is named "tcsky_skyscrp6" and the models for Donald's skyscraper and it's first floor get their textures from a texture dictionary named "cskytosh".

Now, notice how none of the names contain anything related to Donald's name and how Donald's skyscraper model name begins with a T, unlike all other skyscraper model names that begin with the "csky_" prefix.
These names make it clear that the skyscraper wasn't originally designed and intended for Donald, it seems like it was given to him at a later point during the development of the game.

If we take all of these names and combine them together, we get "tshro" + "tosh" = "Toshro".
It may seem the line has ended up with "Toshro", but there's another useful BETA find to consider.

Thanks to @Sergiu, we now know that there was a character named "Toshiro" during the development of the game that was serving the purpose of the Old Oriental Gentleman. Notice how his name sounds suspiciously similar to "Toshro" from the names.
So if we take "Toshro" from the names again and compare it with "Toshiro", it becomes clear that the names are pointing to Toshiro.

Conclusion: Donald's skyscraper was once Toshiro's skyscraper in the early development stages of the game.

Toshiro is also mentioned in this map. There is also a rooftop garden. In fact, Love's building seems to be pretty early. Its shape can be seen a lot in this early map.

Notice though that Toshiros Place is listed separately to Casino? Plus the legend indicates the Casino being in green, which matches up with the where Kenji's casino is in the final game. If anything this map backs up Staunton Assassin's conclusion.

A little correction: Kenji's BETA name wasn't Toshiro. Sorry about that.

Correction, I was wrong about Toshiro being Kenji, he's actually serving the purpose of the Oriental Gentleman but I forgot to change up my post. Also indeed, it's most likely that he was up at the tower, but we don't know for sure yet.

Didn't you see my post above? According to @Sergiu, Toshiro was a separate character who was serving the purpose of the Old Oriental Gentleman in the early iterations of III's storyline, meaning he wasn't Kenji.

It's as if Toshiro was the ancestor of Kenji, Love and the Oriental Guy. Kind of hilarious if you think of it, one of his "descendants" asks you to kill the other, lol. It's sad that we don't know more about the story after Portland. Portland is boring af in the alpha/beta, Staunton's story line seems to be a lot more changed and interesting.

But what's the proof to think that way? He said "Correction, I was wrong about Toshiro being Kenji, he's actually serving the purpose of the Oriental Gentleman but I forgot to change up my post. Also indeed, it's most likely that he was up at the tower, BUT WE DON'T KNOW FOR SURE YET." so it's still more likely that he was Kenji, I know because I saw those photos of GTA III Holy Grail that was presumably bought by GTASeriesVideos. So yeah, unless I won't see any proof, it's clear to me that Kenji's Beta name was indeed Toshiro.

He was saying that it's most likely that DL's place was originally OOGM's place, but that's what's not officially confirmed by the E3 design document yet.

I just took a guess based on what Jinx said about the renders, don't take it as anything official.

Could the GTA 3 pre-release demo disc be one of the most valuable items in the world? Has anyone ever seen one or know of its existence, other than rumours of some German collector who keeps it secret?

it could be somewhere, but its more than likely never going to resurface is my take on it. its been 20 years now and nearly no one cares about gta3 anymore.

I'd say if anything the fanbase would be gouged more than ever. Remember the GTA3 documents that GTA Series Videos purchased, ...and then never shown the rest of us? Or how small things with already known contents like the Rockstar Games 2001 E3 DVD goes for extreme prices on ebay whenever it does get listed. Just a shame these kind of things don't fall into the hands of people who want them in the community.

Thinking about the GTA 3 beta disc has caused me many sleepless nights. Perhaps it's better I try to forget it. I can't put myself through this mental anguish anymore.

Who knows, maybe one day it will surface. And maybe one day it will fall into the hands of a benevolent game collector who will upload its contents to the public.

But until then I can't afford to continue spending my energy thinking of it everyday. My time is better utilized in more productive tasks. Productive tasks that will help me become the best human being I can.

Didn't he (GTA Series Videos) promise they would show it publicly in due time though? Or am I just confusing my wishful thinking for an actual memory lol..

After watching the video I wonder if the driving and controls in general were meant to be more simulationlike instead of arcadey. I mean punishing people for running red lights and (actual) speeding doesn't go well with the arcadey state of the game.

Does anyone know any websites which still contain the original .m4v and/or .wma format trailers?

I've done some research of my own and found a majority of the GTA3/VC/SA trailers in .m4v format, mostly via URL manipulation and guess work.

I'm looking to make an archive of them as they are becoming increasingly difficult to find and most of the YouTube videos look like garbage.

Access the websites through wayback machine, most if not all trailers are saved there in their original formats (mostly .wmv and .mov) and you'll be able to download them, you will need flash player though.

Gouranga.com had every single render and screenshot know to man about GTA3. Beta, alpha, whichever it was. Seems like Rockstar bought it and now it redirects straight to rockstargames.com

Looking into the leaked .SCR mission script source files from the iOS port of the game is really worthwhile. There are a truckload of useful gems in there, such as:

- BETA names and plotlines for certain missions. For example, Ray's "Silence the Sneak" mission was originally named "Silent Witness" and involved killing an eyewitness to Salvatore Leone's assassination, which could be a valid explanation as to why Leon McAffrey uses the "li_man2" ped model in the final version of the game.

- Lots of unused variables related to mission-related peds, cars etc. For example, Toni's "Taking Out the Laundry" mission originally involved blowing up four laundry vans rather than three and Kenji's "Grand Theft Auto" mission was originally named "Gone in Sixty" and involved stealing five luxury cars instead of three within a 10-minute time limit as opposed to the 6-minute time limit in the final version.

- Early revisions of nearly tons of text strings. For example, the "Hey! Get back in the vehicle!" text was originally "Get back into the car and get on with the mission!".

- Unused code for an early and unfinished version of "Luigi's Girls" with the cut "Pick up Trixie from the Reverend Flannery's" objective.

I can go on and on and on about it. There's a WHOLE lot more than these little points lurking in the files, waiting to be discovered...
