Grand Theft Auto III Pre-Release Discussion

I matched up all the beta maps we have together and it was pretty interesting, I never realised before how much of the map was scrapped at some point. It seems like midway in development there was a massive reshuffle to the entire map for whatever reason, either it was problems with the deadline and R* realised the scale of what they wanted was way too ambitious, or they felt the map was going to be a bit sparse with many areas with low quality buildings and no missions to complete (ala true crime LA), and maybe parts like the bulging land mass on the south of Staunton and that power station or whatever above Portland was just pointless scenery without missions. Maybe it was even that they were reaching the limits of the ps2s hardware with their current engine who knows, but it would have been a major decision to make so far into development.

Still leaves my wishing that it had been made the way it was planned (minus the airport on Staunton) The only things I never liked about IIIs map was that Shoreside felt small and unfinished, the islands were too crammed in together and the huge concrete shelf on the north of Portland was ugly and pointless. The original map wouldve been the answer to that, but they wouldve had their reasons to cut it up the way they did.

Red parts are gone, the whole top part of Staunton was just cut off and shifted down and left.

Jeez. I would have loved to Drive around that Map. Shoreside Vale would have also been much more interesting as well.

The section of land at the south-west corner of Staunton Island was removed late in development. It can still be seen on the map in the middle of the GTA III manual.

I'm surprised it took so long for them to realize how incredibly pointless it was.

Maybe they were planning to place something there, but never quite got around to it.

I think it's pretty safe to assume that this weird map of shoreside is just a concept and not a polygonal model yet. What surprises me is that staunton looks relatively finished, yet was changed so much for the final version.

Also just noticed it looks like there was possibly a tunnel to the middle of the stadium that wouldve been nice

Hey, if you want I've made the alpha map in color, it's not 100% accurate but it shows some details a little better: ;)

They probably realized having an airport in such close proximity to a football stadium was a bad idea :p

I wonder what The Porter Tunnel would have been like. Would it have deviated much from its final version?

It would have been used a lot more since there was originally no bridge connecting Portland and Staunton, I think there was supposed to be a Ferry Port too, but I don't know where the port would be in Portland. Maybe that unused port at the bottom right of Portland.

I don't think there was no bridge planned. The east of staunton has a road which looks like one end of a bridge to me. It would come out in portland below the spot it comes out in the final game.

Well, a rocky outcrop with a few trees and park benches overlooking Francis Intl. would have been a really nice addition to the game; you could probably see some really pretty sunsets and sunrises from there. But yes, I guess the vanity just wasn't worth it in the end.

I'm surprised nobody's made a mod yet that'd remake Shoreside Vale to how it would've looked in the beta, even though it would just be houses after houses after houses.

Yeah there was always the bridge there, just it was twice the length it is now.

But that render is already rather late. Definitely not early alpha as the the wireframes above.

I'm not so sure it is because the massive single crane by the docks is defintely quite early. Could be from between the 2nd and 3rd pictures I posted? hmmm I just noticed the 2 sections where the bridge should connect in the second pic don't line up at all, weird. Some questions we'll never know the answers too. Until R* releases a book about the making of the GTAs.

Early previews state that there were going to be ferries in the game, I wonder where the terminals were, It must have been cut very early on.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that noticed that. Such a Suspension Bridge would simply not work.

I'd probably guess the Portland Docks/same place the ferries were in LCS. Guess they scrapped it for III and put in the bridge/tunnels and kept the idea for LCS.

I just found this topic and read through all pages. I'm amazed how many things you found! The Pre-Release clips are amazing!. I didn't even know that these exist.

The "Bank heist Claude" is actually the "Pre-Release" Claude. At first i thought R* wanted to make Claude look more furious for this cutscene but actually they just forgot to change it :D

So i took the files and imported it into 3DS Max, removed the shotgun and put back the normal hands.

And yeah, i don't know.. He looks more like a pig. Maybe the final version isn't that bad :D

I'm not sure how many people know this but two senior Rockstar North audio designers, Craig Conner and Will Morton, left last year to form their own company. As they're no longer with Rockstar they are most likely able to reveal info about the games.

Craig Conner worked on GTA 1 all the way up to GTA 5. He wrote a lot of tracks for the series, including the famous GTA 1 theme and also designed the radio stations. I'm sure there's plenty you can ask him about the GTA development cycles. Here's his Twitter link: https://twitter.com/craigconner01

Will Morton worked on GTA Vice City up to GTA 5. He was the dialogue editor for the in-game characters and pedestrians. Here's his Twitter link: https://twitter.com/willmortonaudio

You can find many other people linked to GTA's development through Craig Conner's twitter as well. The problem is actually getting in contact with them, since I believe they've disabled direct messages

I believe all Rockstar North employees are under an NDA and not allowed to talk about anything, so there's not much reason to contact them. Unless some ex-employees like Craig Conner and Will Morton are still under some kind of contract, they should be allowed to talk. I've sent them some messages before on Twitter and they did reply. They have given several interviews since they left as well: http://www.solidaudioworks.com/press/

Current employees under NDA makes sense, but former? I doubt it. Rockstar is secretive, but only really about newer projects to prevent leaks.

It's definitely worth a shot attempting to contact former employees. They will absolutely have some valuable information

It has been a long while, lads.
Didn't post too often but now I think it's finally time to post something seeing as how important this next bit of information will be.

Based on around 3 previews from various media outlets (no reason to get a citation here since most people who are active around this thread will probably be aware of that) have referenced ferries as means of transportation.
Even the Gouranga website has picked it up and mentioned it quite a lot in their information category.

Well, we can't know this since there are no actual screenshots and previewers could be exaggerating you might say? Well, now we have definitive proof that ferries were, at the very least, planned.
Following the information shared by previews we can actually conclude that they made it into an actual feature at some point.

map_01.jpg
Well, this image is quite common. Many of us have seen it. Quite often, actually. A simple planning board for the map.
I still wonder how come nobody noticed this...
Jfje1Sm.png

They actually had both a ferry port and a marina in Staunton which makes it quite clear that ferries were supposed to be something if we go by the other details implied in previews.

Why is it important that they were planning both a ferry port and a marina? It is proof that they didn't simply use the term ferry port for a generic marina but was something quite unique instead.

I'm pretty sure that there's nothing else to add here. It is clear that ferries were *at least* planned at some point if not even a complete feature as supported by previews.
fDuAHek.png
Matter of fact, this little wireframe here looks quite similar to a ferry port and the boat itself looks quite similar to a more modern ferry rendition.
Is this the actual ferry/ferry port? You decide. At least we finally know that previewers weren't lying about ferries.

Previewers have a nasty habit of unreasonably extrapolating from vague information. I can't think of a way that they might do that for ferries. I'm willing to bet that the LCS ferry model came straight from III's asset database, and was just touched up a bit. I'd have loved to see ferries in III. They may have launched from the Callahan Point slip and parked up next to Asuka's pad and vice versa. Maybe Last Requests was once a race to catch the last ferry out of Portland...

If ferries were indeed put in place of the Callahan Bridge, they would have severely hindered the pace of traveling between Portland and Staunton, so I'm happy they didn't make the cut.

Imagine zipping through Portland in a Banshee, then coming to a screeching halt as you wait for the next ferry to arrive. When it inevitably arrives at the Portland ferry dock, you board it and then must wait for it to slowly tug through the water to bring you to your next destination, from where you can then finally continue. All this as opposed to driving across a bridge? No thanks. The Shoreside Vale lift bridge is already enough of a nuisance already.

Or, it would always wait there until you wanted to use it. It would either show you getting transported, or would be a teleport type thing.
