this list for the final PS2 game is very similar, actually the beta build is missing some of the unused files like otb_ext/otb_int, and some are in both PS2 games but seem to cause no issue on PC

I highly doubt it's Johndoe releasing them. It'd make his customers 10x as angry.

Wouldn't be surprised if these are the actions of customers as a big F you, as it's not like he can continue to sell them.

ripped out the files with imgtool on old pc

i found a .bat online for convdff and tweaked it to this

)

 as for textures, magictxd>tools>mass convert is pretty straightforward

I mean it could very well technically be his stuff still, just not leaked by him :lol: One thing's for certain, some ex-dev from back then was definitely leaky because it's odd at this point so many builds are leaking, alongside parts of game design docs.

What I find interesting is the lack of controls on assets like beta builds at the time. It's quite common now to have overlays on top of beta builds for each user, or signing the file out and it being hidden within the build as to who's accessed it (and consequently leaked it).

 

The design docs are more interesting, as they're printed, copied and scanned in - to avoid detection?

Game development was an organisational sh*tshow back then honestly, so this isn't that surprising. :p Especially these earlier games which I'm sure R* crunched "to death", hence some things being finished so late.

Not to mention that it's surprising they were hidden for 20 years and just now start surfacing. I'd say it's a mix of collector gatekeeping and NDAs beginning to expire. Plus Rockstar no longer seems to care much about anything pre 2010.

I don't necessarily think the NDAs expire, in any case it's still copyrighted material which is owned by Take2/Rockstar/Rockstar North - arguably more legally potent than any potential NDA signed by an employee; a conviction for breaching copyright/computer misuse/fraud while an employee is aggravated and the starting point becomes prison in most jurisdictions within the UK, I assume the states too.

 

I do think there's something in the first bit though; my take is numerous people have 'collected' things and paid for them, the same source has controlled it all - anyway it's come out that he was effectively conning them, and making them sign non-enforceable NDAs, and they're revolting knowing there's no way they can possibly recover their cash (because it was effectively a non-permitted transaction, and has no consumer protections as it's appropriated copyrighted works they were buying). Either way, fair play - by releasing everything they've paid for/been conned to pay for they're removing the power from the source of it all, and allowing better archive of game development.

Holding L1+L2+R1+R2 together at the Rockstar logo doesn't skip straight to the loading screen in the beta build.

 

If you don't stop in the pink marker in front of the Ocean View Hotel then the pink marker to start "An Old Friend" will be invisible but still functional.

 

Rims on cars look more wobbly compared to the uniform movement of the final game.

 

When carjacking a ped from a vehicle where Tommy has to throw them out on their back(Cheetah for example) the ped plays the full animaton of reaching out with their left arm before getting up from GTA 3 while the final game has them get up immediately when the get thrown out.

 

Tommy also plays this GTA 3 animation when he's carjacked instead of awkwardly laying on his back motionless like the final game.

 

No Ken Rosenburg dialogue when busted.

 

Different camera angles in the intro for " Four Iron"

 

RC Helicopter uses the GTA 3 Helicopter rotor blade effect.

 

Diaz's Admiral is a greyish blue color in "Guardian Angels" instead of white.

 

The marker at the entrance of "Death Row" will stay on the map until the mission ends if you bypass it via helicopter.

 

Maverick never spawns at the Hyman Condos.
