About the hands and fingers, I think it's all photoshop.

Rockstar did this commonly in promotional screenshots, I think they simply painted over the image and added fingers, defined the hands etc.

Saying them it's photoshopped really stretching it and kinda non-logical tbh. Because what benefit it will give to Rockstar photoshopping a small detail like this? I also never heard Rockstar photoshopping promotional screenshots before. If there's one i'd like to see it. (If you're talking about GTAV screenshots, Rockstar added some few effects like blurs, focus, fake lightning etc... Nothing game altering, like photoshopping a gun or an object or details that not in the game. Also in their older games, altering screenshots wasn't a case, as far i know)

 

Rockstar revisioned and downgraded Tommy's hands like at least 3 times, pretty sure they broke or cut finger placement or it never even made into release build. What i also think is, Rockstar probably had two different build branches for Vice City during development. First build is used for development/debugging and promotional screenshots and other is release build. These hand models probably never made out development build because even after PS2 version released, PC port screenshots of Vice City somehow still featured this finger adjustment but never made into release. I assume Rockstar captured these screenshots from development build. If you compare these screenshots with release version of the game, you'll clearly spot that his hands are totally different.

There was never such branching as "develompent/debugging/promotional screenshots build vs release build", it makes no f*cking sense.

Back in 3d era times R* were photoshopping almost every single promotional screenshot, adding fake shadows, reflections, making wheels perfectly round or adding trigger fingers. It's marketing, you want to show your product as best as possible, most of that stuff will be hidden by blur/trails/super low PS2 resolution anyway.

I'm still waiting on that photoshopped images. I have inspected over 50+ screenshots and i've seen nothing out of ordinary. Only minimal edits. This photoshop idea is a common myth going around on GTAForums or confirmed to be %100 it's an actual thing? Build branches is a "speculation" i'm not saying %100 percent correct.

Because some of PC version screenshots using different hand models and beta vertex shading used in beta. Also when i said "exclusive" i meant they're taken from PC version of the game not that they are rare screenshots.

Except the new findings, most of the content posted in this thread was already found years ago but people still post it. It's not l'ke you can to gather new/fresh beta content for a game that released over 20 years ago.

Never claimed there was developmental branch %100, it was just a speculation. Only photoshop i've spotted so far minimal effects and nothing more. I've checked possibly every pre-release Vice City screenshot didn't see stuff like fake reflections or fake shadows. (There's one screenshot with Phil Cassidy with his shadow if that's what you meant) If you can show me i'd be happy to look. Photoshopping Perfectly rounded wheels? I mean that's just a ridiculous claim. I can understand Rockstar showing high poly models in their pre-release screenshots later downgrading in release. But Photoshop? Is this even confirmed? I hope i don't sound arrogant, just trying to find out any truth in this.

I didn't expect you to throw a fit over a single comment, a single comment that was a fact that is.

They photoshopped everything back in the day with Vice City having the most doctored images from what I've seen.

They don't just photoshop, they also make up fake scenarios that doesn't even happen in the games.

I just noticed that in a cutscene for the mission "The Chase" Diaz is seen betting on horses and then we chase the thief exactly to the place where Inside Track is placed. It is known that betting was supposed to be introduced in Vice City, so I feel like textbox informing player about it would pop up after this mission.

Apparently, Lance was supposed to introduce us to Pole Position club after we visit Ammu-Nation in "Back Alley Brawl". Check out the files lanstp1.wav and lanstp2.wav in the Audio folder. Here's the transcript:

 

"Tommy, every man needs a little R&R once in a while. This here is The Pole Position strip club. You might want to drop in sometime".

 

In the final game it was Mercedes who shown us the club. Lance wanted get high with the brother, but Tommy preferred to get down with the sister.

 

Also, in law1_9.wav and law1_10.wav the owner of "nice bike" from "The Party" bragging to some girl about picking it up from Howlin' Pete's. I don't know why the line was cut. Maybe because Howlin' Petes is unavailable in the beginning of the game or maybe because the feature of buying bikes was cut from the game.

In all seriousness, we haven't been contacted over any of these supposed leaks from the old games - if this changes, we'll obviously comply, but I don't think they've cared about other stuff hosted elsewhere either. I've restored the link for now.

There certainly seem to be some interesting outcomes out of this GTA collector drama tho...

This just seems to be a debug/dev version of the final build, no? 2nd October 2002 is less than a month before launch, they'd be printing discs by then.

Wikipedia says, that they released RTM (gold) build to manufacture on October 15th.

Yes, but discs would need to be printed much before that, for distribution.

 

It does seem to have a fair few differences, maybe specific to the dev branch or whatever. The intro music is a slightly different earlier version, which means maybe they still had an older version of the intro video file in there.

Beta wheels

Different theme song mixing

Different intro

Different cutscene cam angles and some anims

 

This is the GameSpot preview build, the one with the white & grey cop cars. Quite a few changes...

Ohhh right it being a preview build might explain it then. The executable compile date is likely newer than the content itself.

 

For those interested, the VICEPAL.PSS file has the earlier version of the intro and the audio stream is lossless PCM. So if you want a high quality version of that theme... there.
