The 3D Model and Render Topic

Recommended Posts

Since there's no (recent ish) topic on 3D modelling (yes I searched). This topic is used for discussing 3D modeling in general; Projects, show off stuff, CAD software discussion, and whatnot.

Ill start. I primarily use (pictures of current projects on respective software):

CATIA V5

TIPPMANN98dmag.png

Tippmann 98 D-mag Sten style conversion kit

Google Sketchup 8 + Maxwell Render

Guess I could post a few.

Here's an old project model I was working on for a friend awhile back. I've since had to split it into components because it's gotten too large to render as one piece.

Two close ups.

Here are a few renders of a spaceship I was just making for the hell of it. I messed up some of the textures though. :T

Thanks, I mostly just do it for fun nowadays. :p

That sounds pretty fun actually! How is 3D printing with Sketchup, BTW? I've never tried it.

Make sure the part is solid otherwise it will not work. Try downloading the solid solver plugin which will help a lot.

then convert to STL format (sketchup can do this with no plugins)

I have made 3d printer ready models before on sketchup.

the LOD (level of Detail) depends on how big you want the 3d printed model to be. Dont be overly detailed with small things (like mine)

This is the only surviving model i could find from last year

3dprintcar1.png

It was too detailed and failed (mostly the grille and mirrors)

ALSO make your models hollow, but still solid.

Kind of like this

Thanks for the information, I'm definitely going to look more into doing this. I've wanted a 3D printer for a few years but I keep putting it off.

I tend to build my models with 'thick' walls anyway for rendering, since it reduces light leaks (a common issue with large models for Kerkythea users), so I should be good to go after converting them. As for LOD, lol yeah I couldn't print out that spaceship, but for simpler stuff I should be set.

Just dug up some old stuff I was doing years ago, as part of a 'convert Fallout 1 to 3D' project. Obviously it never got finished. :p They're pretty old and this was back when I was first getting used to the whole 3D thing.

looks cool. I also made (fictional) firearms using Sketchup just for entertainment purposes

here's some of my good stuff from 13

All mags were loaded with rounds too for detail purposes

Inuding engravings of the name and (fictional) company for detail too

It was fun making that belt o ammo :)

I plan on continuing at some point when more important projects finish

I really want to improve my AR/M16 style platform (looks a little disproportional to me)

I've made a 3d thread once, but not much contributor in here, i'm afraid. That's why now i moved from regularly browsing gtaf lol
Anyway to contribute, latest practice from me. Fullres on my deviantart.

As always, cool stuff, Black.

I tried my hand at some 3D modeling stuff but just couldn't master the program and seemed a bit tough to learn by just winging it. Would be cool to bring your ideas and drawings to life though.

Ive been looking to get into some 3D stuff, what would you guys suggest to get started with? I have always been very interested in making 3D models that could be used as levels or something , i don't know.

Thanks, man. It's obviously could have been better, but i need to get back focusing on my real projects, so i leave her as it is.

@Vanhalen
Superb modeling, but you need to work on the presentation, example like the reflection is a bit too much, its distracting,

@DestaliusDark
You could go freeware with Blender, or get student version of Maya/3ds Max. Learn basic tutorial through videos on youtube (there's so much there), and after you get the hang of it, keep practicing everyday.
Seeing that you want to do game environment art, i suggest that you learn sculpting too. Use software like Zbrush or Mudbox, though with mudbox, you could get it free with student version too, unlike Zbrush. But Zbrush is pretty much more widely used among artist, i think.

Me, i go all free, since i haven't been able to make a living myself. So the software i used is:
- Blender (still learning)
- 3ds Max student version (for poygonal modeling)
- Mudbox student version (for sculpting)
- Xnormal (baking and stuff)
- Krita (painting app)

I take it you have never seen a polished up show ready truck before. It's all chrome or polished aluminum, guys sit there for hours polishing and cleaning trucks to make them look good.

Yes the paint on the red one is too shiny.

Well, if you wanted to achieve something like that's, thats cool.

But, i honestly prefer watching something like this (obviously not mine)

5e19a77b88b629ca57df193b39bdca58.jpg

The detail he had done on the car read so well with simple presentation, and not too distracting.

Seeing yours probably had ton of details like this, doing a simple presentation could help bring out all the details.

It just a suggestion from me, don't take it the wrong way.

If you are going into serious business with 3d modeling (automotive industry, appliance design, etc), Id strongly recommend getting to know CATIA, Solidworks, Unigraphics NX, or Autodesk. You can find cracked versions if you dont wanna pay or are not in school (im not gonna point you in any directions to find it; warez is a DIY thing).

Some more freeware suggestions

Google Sketchup

Blender (previously mentioned by another user)

Gmax

Google sketchup is probably a great start if you have like zero 3d modelling skills (its where I started and I have made almost all of the previous posted pictures in Sketchup). Ive started from simple crappy boxes to complex 50k polygon plus models.

Also does anyone know of a good free (or crackable  ) rendering software that is fairly good. I have these cad softwarez:

Google Sketchup 8

Google Sketchup 13 or 14 or whatever

CATIA v5

NX7.5

Gmax

Milkshape

Blender

Thank you, both of you!

I will check them out and decide what i want to get started on, i once messed around in Zbrush and Mudbox and it was pretty weird, i think they are too advanced for me since i don't know anything else.

So yeah, maybe i'll upload something here in the next months to get some critique on my first work!

Zbrush UI is a mess, i can't even do sh*t with that software, but one day, i'm going to learned it, because it is so much advanced than mudbox, so they say.

Get sculptris. It's free, and pretty much a basic sculpting program. Once you get good with it, learn mudbox or Zbrush for more advanced stuff.

Cool topic.

I finished this New York street corner back in June. I'm not fully satisfied with it, i'm thinking about going back to it once i finish my second and current environment piece in UE4.
Not happy with the building on the left. I'm also thinking of making it post apocalyptic, (a la The Last of Us), will open lots of possibilities and if done right, will definitely look more interesting than it does now.
Software used: CryEngine 3.5.8, 3D Studio Max 2013, Photoshop CS6, xNormal and CrazyBump.

Thank you, both of you!

If you want to make levels like you said, I wouldn't start with sculpting software but rather modeling software. I'd recommend 3Ds Max.

I started using Zbrush a few months ago and it felt so awkward at first, it gets better though. Still, I try to avoid sculpting as much as possible:P

Sweet environment, dude! Been wanting to put my model onto game engine, but didn't have time to learn them...

Don't know much about environment stuff, but yeah, start with polygonal modelling software first..

As a character artist, i'm afraid sculpting is a must. But hey, a year ago i didn't even know what sculpting is, lol.

Anyway, here's my latest WIP of my latest project.

Try squaring off the roof of the left building like the others

Sadly this is the only shot I have, as I lost the files and the other pictures (old hard drive went bust a few weeks back).

Just something I've been working on for a buddy. Very early, still not shaped quite right. Haven't figured out the textures yet, either.
