What's happened to the radio?

I can't be alone in thinking the HD universe' radio has nothing on VC/SA can I? I'm not just talking the music, I mean everything from the commercials to the little bits of dialogue between tracks. They've sort of lost touch with what made it so good and how it helped immerse you in the world.

The radio felt like it was part of the game in the 3D era, referencing things that existed within the city, characters in the game had aire time and the DJ's actually felt like they were a part of it with things they would say or the vibe they had that just, fit the station and time.

The HD universe has lost all of that. Turning into a 'hey look at this celebrity we have now' rather than creating an entirely unique personality that works with that station. Axl Rose is in SA but you wouldn't know that unless you looked in the game booklet, there is some clever dialogue between him and the Radio X DJ as a sort of wink nudge we got Axl f*cking Rose in our game, and that was perfect.

V (and IV for that matter) is a bit of a mess, the DJ's themselves might not be bad but they're totally disconnected from the world, being as generic as they can get away with whilst still trying to be the GTA of old and it doesn't work. Space and LSRR are basically the best example of that.'We got this guy and look he has his own song on his station haha' but they're basically irrelevant. I'm not against having names do the radio, Cara Delevingne did a great job because she talks about the game world as if she knew what she getting into whilst the rest are bland copies of each other playing to the stereotype of that station. Just try harder.

TL;DR - New radio bad, old radio good.

I totally agree with you and stuff. Some things I hated about the HD radio aswell-

*Why do we need celebrities to host the station? Why not just get some regular Joe Schmoe to do it like in III or VC?
*Get rid of the "social commentary" and you'll be 50% better. You're a video game, not South Park

*Why do the songs have to mention places that contradict the ingame places? Of course, I know it's not always possible to get an artist to rerecord a line for the game, but when there's a song called "Hollywood Nights" in a game which has Vinewood in it's place, doesn't that seem a bit annoying?

IV wasn't of the same quality but was still OK. There was a few funny talk shows like the healthcare one but the radio in V was substantially weaker than even IV in my opinion. I can't even remember any of the DJs in V except Cara whereas I can remember all of them from SA. Having played through V much more recently than SA, yes I think its fair to say they've gotten very generic.

i agree they really need to work on making the radio sound more like an actual radio station rather than try too hard to be funny and throw a bunch of childish humor at us.

the radio in san andreas sounded like an actual radio. it had humor here and there but it was mostly music and the dj's had personality. in gta v i feel like its the same boring commercials over and over again and it just feels as if a celeb is sitting in the studio reading off a script while the game just plays a random song. it doesnt really feel like a radio.

gta 4 radio also feel like real radio, each station had a different feel and even some stations like the beat 106 had different dj's that would alternate just like a real radio station.

the dj's in v barely had charisma or charm, and the songs in that game felt extremely repetitive

IV's radio is great. It just sounds like New York. I listen to NY radio all the time in Jersey and it is dead on. Iggy Pop is one of my top five DJs in the series. V is hit or miss but there are some good stations. Pam Grier did a great job on Lowdown.

I couldn't have said better OP !

Even regarding the track selection, 3d era did a way better job than HD.

It's not that the soundtrack sucks in IV or V, but there's way too much average or useless radio stations that made the cut (why two jazz stations in IV ? One would have been enough), alongside extremely weird dev choices. Some radio stations are inconsistent as hell (Los Santos Rock Radio, Non Stop Pop FM, Worldwide FM ...), other seems to have been rushed (Rebel Fm) etc ...

Also I'd like to add that there's almost only Los Santos oriented stations in V ... What do you have for Blaine County ? An half assed Rebel Radio, Channel X, a talk radio ?

There's the exact same number of song in Radio Mirror Park (one L.S. station out of 14) than in all the Blaine County stations I've listed above !

Not very DJ related but I wanted to say that.

i wish the radio would change from day to night maybe switching djs or going off to record mode maybe with the dj saying they have to go and the dj should mention in game events and say other things instead of the same crap from the beginning or even better change songs (replace older ones with newer ones) as time goes on. GTA SA really got it good

Strangely, as limited as the 3D era was, its radio wasn't so boring to listen as V's is.
Damn, the first thing I do on V is turn off the radio since I got tired of the same bullsh*t, whereas I would go on full volume at any radio station from SA.

The Other Dude

I agree with you for the most part, but I did enjoy the radio in GTAIV. The subsequent overhaul and additions in the episodic packs were disappointing especially with Massive B Soundsystem 96.6 and Tuff Gong radio being replaced with RamJam FM and the DJ that wouldn't shut up and let the songs actually play. In GTAV most radiostations are tolerable but I think others like Radio Los Santos, Soulwax FM, and Vinewood Boulevard Radio are filled with a lot of annoying music. Lazlo was decent in GTAIV but Chattersphere is so boring to listen to. Surprisingly, The other two segments on WCTR (The Fernando Show and Chakra Attack) are actually entertaining but it's true that the radio in the EFLC and GTAV are second-rate.

SA was a masterpiece with the radio stations. They really contributed to the atmosphere, changing with the stories.

The song choices for V are great, but WCTR really let it down. GTA's Lazlow has just become a boring, bland loser, and he was always the best part of the talk shows. Chakra Attack and the shows on Blaine County radio were up to the hilarious standard of the past talk shows, but the rest were just boring.

The Fernando Martinez show is just god-awful and boring. I don't want to even mention Lazlow's show, it's just toilet joke, social commentary, Lazlow being a rude f*ck and being dominated, Nervous break down, then it ends. :sarcasm:

I don't think that the radio is any worse than the 3D version. Well, but the best radios were in the 2D Universe, imho.

There's no way we can consider the radio stations in the 2d era as the best of the franchise, but there's definitely killer tracks on it !

I really enjoy Rebel Radio in Residential District : Taxi drivers must diiiiiiie !

Not surprising, esp., if their approach was along the lines of recognizing the changing times, and with the broader audience in mind. Radio were indeed better during 3D era, and kept getting better, up and until, their newly found direction; HD era.

Though, I have seen people who seem to like it, too.

The GTA2 radios were the best because they were simple, had good music (mostly) and there were no talk radios.
