What's Bad About Tank/Jet/Heli Player Icons?

Here's how my night went yesterday....

 

I was up on the mall roof (the one opposite LSC) sniping and defending my spot in a big old war between around ten players. Because there were ten players, the mini-map became cluttered. I have the blue/yellow icons obstructing my view of other players. I can't tell whether they are looking at me or the other way. It's hard enough to ascertain this without also having the black road obscuring the triangle if they happen to be next to the road. On top of that I also have the name tags all located in one place, further obstructing triangles sights and icons.

 

....and then suddenly you get that obnoxious helicopter icon swooping overhead making its sweeps across the warzone. That great big lollocopter icon that R* decided was needed in a game over a year old. If it isn't the helicopter icon, it is the aeroplane icon swooping around an already over-cluttered mini-map.

 

What's my current solution? Turn off the name tags, and .... uh? that's it. I have no choice or input as to what I THE PLAYER would like to have at my disposal.

 

I can see the benefit of the new icons.

 

- I now know there is a jet flying around the north of the map, so perhaps instead of flying to the north I could go by car or teleport, or get a Buzzard and go off the radar and grief the jet.

 

- In missions I now know if some AFK player, or a player going the completely different route to the rest of us is in-fact in a chopper or boat and is back on their way.

 

- I now know where the person who I just killed parked their Buzzard.

Personall y I haven't played since before they added those icons but I don't like the idea of them. There's such a thing as too much information on the game screen. And the mini map especially. When you can launch any job from the start menu why need all those icons cluttering up the map?

 

As for the tank and jet icons I think its just laziness. Because rockstarcant be assed to cone up with a viable way to take down tanks as they're so op it takes the easy way out and simply tells you were they are.

 

I'd much rather see working stealth mechanics and a viable means of destroying a tank. Would have been a much better solution.

 

It's just another way of dumbing down the game and taking any skill out of it. Next patch will see sniper icons for players on rooftops. Or gun icons for any player that has a weapon out.

 

Imo. The icons for jets and tanks are uneccessary and a terrible idea. What would have been better would have been viable counter measures. Legitimate weak spots. And working stealth allowing players to get up close and a well placed c4 the tracks or the gun. To disable it. Or anti tank rifle straight through the rear armour into the engine. And not the ridiculous amount it currently takes.

 

Give players the means to combat tanks rather than run from them.

I love the new indicator. When im in the Buzzard I have more people that notice me now and get a Buzzard too to come shoot me down. I love heli dogfights!

This is the only problem I have with it. My crew and I were in a big FR battle last night and 3 times, I almost shot my crew mates out of the sky because I couldnt tell them apart. How hard is it to add a coloured ribbon around the edge like the normal player icons?

Play the game before commenting on its features.

 

I'm on the fence about it. I do like to know when a heli is coming up on me fast, but then again when I'm in a heli the element of surprise is gone. I'd like to know if there is a bigger picture to all of this that I'm not seeing. I do think the icons should be a bit smaller. And I really wish they would lose the job markers.

Are you sure? I've never been able to tell the difference, same with all of my friends. no matter the mental state

 

Pretty sure... a friend was in secession and a blue helicopter blip was on the radar. So I presume that was him but I can't think of another reason it'd be blue.

Freeroam has completely devolved into a never-ending deathmatch with lazers, so I stick to private. However, on the few occasions the game glitches out and kicks me into a public lobby it is VERY helpful to be able to open the map, quickly spot the lazer user(s) and avoid them until I leave or re-join a private session somehow.

 

In missions, it's just a nice bit of extra info being able to tell who is flying what.

Free Roam is the biggest source of butthurt in this whole game.

 

You all know you can kill each other for free in death matches, captures, VS missions and LTSs? You're K/D ratio is gonna increase a whole lot faster than trying to track down players in free roam too.

 

16 players in a concentrated part of a map > 16 players scatted across the entire map.

I don't know what game you guys are playing where there are hundreds of jets flying around, killing people indiscriminately, and generally lighting up the city like Fallujah. I see maybe one jet every 3rd or 4th session if I'm lucky. I rarely see 2 on the map at the same time, as one will usually cancel out the other. If you're getting "griefed" by yoiks in Lazers so often that they have to modify the game to make you happy, then you're doing something wrong.

They are bad because they take out the fun and surprise of using armed choppers and other aircraft in tough situations.

 

Picture this:

Your with your crew in an online sessions and your fighting it out with another crew. Your team is loosing but you have a trick up your sleeve, You plan to have someone pilot an armed Buzzard that you stashed on a roof nearby, Somewhere that the other team wouldn't think to look for a Buzzard. You are chosen to go off the radar, go get the chopper and surprise them behind cover.

 

Now without the new icons this would work as planned and you would have a good opportunity to obliterate as many of the other crew as possible before you get RPG'd, sniped or someone manages to throw a grenade that blows up at the right moment.

 

With these new icons the other team would be instantly alerted that you have a chopper and would have extra time to get into cover or whatever they plan to do. Your chances of getting a kill would be a lot slimmer since someone in the enemy team could be waiting behind cover with an RPG ready to blow you out of the sky, simply because these new icons would give them a chance to come up with a strategy a lot more quickly.

 

Whats wrong with leaving these situations to be the surprise that they should be. I think that having to use your wits it a whole lot more fun than just having to look at the minimap.

 

I personally think these icons are a bit too much. The jet one is useful but the chopper icon is a bit overkill, A lot of people nowadays have a good gaming headset that would alert them quickly enough.

On topic, why should other players know what vehicle you're in?

 

Why do we even have dots.. why not just make it a big mystery

It's bad for them because we know what vehicle a troll is going to be rampaging in, thus allowing the normal players to keep a safe distance away or find a suitable shelter from the incoming asshole.

My thought's exactly. If I'm every in a Chopper/Jet chances are I'm defending myself from one of those dochebags.

 

Most of the dogfight's I've been in have been started by cocky players thinking they're an air force pilot who then get blown to pieces because they're exaggerrated skills are complete bollocks, most of the time it only takes me a few uses of the gun's or rockets to put these tryhards in their place. Whenever I manage to hit their rotor they accuse me of cheating because it wasn't a rocket that done it, Last time I heard propellers weren't immune to minigun rounds.
