So after acquiring a PS3 earlier, I played GTA V, and now close to finish my GTA IV complete replay (such a revelation, not needing to deal with PC DRM and crappy port, sigh).

Which game should I get next? Preferably something open-world with driving and decent enough story in a modern setting while not overly wacky.

I played Mafia II, LA Noire and Saints Row II/III (tbh didn't like either one very much). I know RDD doesn't have cars but some say it still encapsulates GTA better than the other games, and horses are fun too.

Here comes the army of Mafia fans.

On a serious note, each and every game is unique in its own terms. Cannot really decide.

Which Mafia has an army of fans? The first one definitely should have one. As for the second one, I just really hate games with a sh*tty rushed ending. MOHAA, Mafia II, RAGE, doesn't matter how good the game is, if the ending is as underwhelming as with these 3, the game sucks in my book.

Fortunately on my first GTA IV playthrough I did the deal so this game didn't get on the list (I hated that bitch).

Indeed. I do quite agree that the 1st one was a stellar hit that left a mark in the gaming industry, while the 2nd one went down as a generic third person shooter. The ambient, music and character design save Mafia 2, actually. The story's nice (while that's subjective) the ending did feel like a 'to be continued' which also felt like a big 'f*ck you' at the same time. But in the end, Mafia 2's story was quite good, the city/ambient/music was certainly amazing.

Looking at the options in the poll, I'd definitely say RDR. I've only played a certain amount of it, but it definitely feels like a brilliant Rockstar Games title. All I know is that Sleeping Dogs was to be apart of the True Crime series - in case you've played those games, and is set in Hong Kong? I don't know too much about it so I won't vote on that. As for Far Cry 3, the storyline for it is quite good, however it's the type of game where once it's done, there's nothing to do - at least for me, anyway. It's different from the other games you listed though.

I honestly never got all that hype about SD. Besides the melee fighting every other aspect of that game is pure rubbish. Just Cause 2 is much better than SD. Driving in SD feels like an 80's arcade game and in a game where you spend a lot of time in a car that kind of ruins it, the city has a strange, confusing layout (though it may be like that in real life and me just being used to play in american cities), free running will often get in the way instead of being an easy way to travel around like it is in Assassins Creed games.. etc.. I don't know, I just never got it.

So out of those you mention, RDR is definitely the best choice. Driver lacks a lot of stuff and Far Cry 3 is a nice game, but it's not really a GTA game, it's a first person shooter set in a jungle basically. I may add Just Cause 2 since you didn't mention it, but that one is god for pure fun, if you expect a good story you'll be disappointed.

I didn't list JC2 because I already have it on order. Or rather, I'd already play it if the store where I ordered it didn't send me Kane & Lynch instead. Which is a game I actually really like just not with a controller.

Also, it's the second time I got K&L by mistake instead of something else. It's like stores are trying to dump it on me since I'm the only person in the world who likes it or something.

Buuut yea, recently I've been in the mood for more serious games so JC2 probably isn't it anyway. I guess I'll go with RDR for now. Could use some change from a city and if I get bored by the countryside, I can get to SD any time.

Just btw, I found a nice cheap copy of RDR GOTY on ebay. AND found that GTA:SA is currently $3.99 for PS3 (never played this one). AND just managed to get my old Steam copy of GTAVC running. Okay I think I'm set for now. SD can wait a little.

the ironic one

All are great and worth to play IMO. The question is which one to start with. If you like FPSs the most then go for FC3, if driving then go for Driver, if you are a Bruce Lee films fan then go for sleeping dogs. And RDR if you had fun watching Django.

Red Dead Redemption is a masterpiece, can't go wrong with it!
On side note, multiplayer of that game is pretty much f*cked up, but if you're playing in single player only, buy it.

Nice list, gave me some ideas for the future. BTW Total Overdose is in the city, although there's some countryside (and I think even a jungle too). And IIRC you even play an undercover cop. Although the game is too insane to be considered an alternative to GTA, it shouldn't escape anyone who likes shooting and some insane driving. Not much different from Saints Row style, just even more cartoonish.

I highly recommend RDR. Flawless experience. A GTA western and one of the most engaging games I've ever played.

Sleeping dogs was enjoyable and if you're a fan of FPS games, definitely check out Far Cry 3. It's a unique take in an increasingly oversaturated genre of gaming. Unfortunately I have yet to play that particular driver game.
