Are there any factors that play into one froping in a session?

I was playing the whole day,going through sessions with different numbers of players and no Special Crate droped...

I get lots of standard ones,I sometimes the special ones,it's all working fine,but I didn't get any special drop with the T-Shirt today

Rockstar really likes trolling the fanbase with these crate drops; the designers are total assholes. I have missed so many announced crate drops that never happened...

 

But on this one, I got lucky, out of the blue, for no reason.

 

I was just dicking around doing missions last night, and I get dropped into the free-roam public sh*thole between each mission. I saw a couple of helicopter icons, so I decided to stay in the public session and call my Buzzard and just fly the friendly skies, so I could get a sense of how far away the icon would show up, relative to when I would hear the lock-on tone, for future defensive reference. But as I was going to get the heli, I saw the "special crate drop in 10 hours" message.

 

I expected that the message was total bullsh*t as usual, but I decided to stick around, since no one was shooting missiles at me. Sure enough, I kept getting the countdown, for 5 hours, then 3 hours, and the green circle showed up on the map. I flew toward it, and amazingly, nobody else in the session was going for it. I got to the green circle about the time that the countdown should be over, and sure enough, the crate just popped into view! Wow! So I quickly landed and killed of a couple of NPCs guarding it, and actually got the crate. The fist T-shirt was listed in the contents.

 

I probably won't wear the T-shirt, and most of us don't need 5000RP and a minigun any more, but it felt like victory, to actually beat Rockstar's crate trolling for once. No rhyme or reason.

a) It's buggy as all f*ck, half the time they never drop because squeakers rush to the circle and bug it out; and

haven't played the game in weeks. dusted it off and instantly remembered why I stopped playing. the game is broken and full of hackers. after 2 hours of loading screens at least I got thru the event and got my ugly mask. it started out with a full lobby and ended with 4 players. way to go rockstar.

 

first crate drop a douche in godmode wont let anyone near it. second crate drop middle eastern little kids booted everyone from the lobby as soon as it said crate drop inbound. like always they were the only people not on my list of recent players.

I've only had one crate drop and that was yesterday. Wasn't a special one, though I got myself GTA$1000 and 1000RP. Dropped around the Ron Alternates Windfarm.

Sounds like you need changing couple settings in your modem...

I'm not sure about any factors which help them appear or not. Think it's just random luck. I got one after I had just joined a session, within a minute or two it dropped, got my buzzard and scooped it up. Was on the beach just north of the air base. None of the other 9 or 10 players seemed to want it. Got the T-shirt, $10K, a mini-gun and some rp.

It did end up appearing! First crate since Feb, seriously! I was in invite only in the process of selling a gang car and modifying a new bike. No one else with me so they do drop with only 1 person in a session.

"Event weekends" and "Crate drops" annoy the hell out of me. They do not reward loyal players. They only serve to annoy and frustrate loyal players. They should give away things if you login on that day and play like they did with the "Homies" shirt.

 

To answer OP's question: Rank has nothing to do with it. I was 150 and had no access to crate drops. You have to complete many missions from Ron/Trevor until they call you and specifically tell you to get crates. After you have them unlocked you need to cycle through the random events before a crate will drop (Rob armored trucks, steal Simeon HPVs, Lester targets, regular crates, etc.)

I've actually seen quite a lot of them, compared to normal. This weekend has been a flurry of people fighting over them. I managed to grab one earlier, despite having a bounty on me at the time, and got away scot-free. Thanks Hakuchou
