Sorta enjoying this idea because it means you gotta stay in the freemode lobby for a while, its fun finding stuff to do, ways to get money etc. However I have been playing for like 30 mins in one lobby and have yet to see one drop, are they a rare occurrence or should I just switch lobbies?

They seem to be very rare. I don't play in publics as much as I used to so maybe those that do would have better insight. The only two crates I've ever actually gotten were in an invite only game which was weird.

People are reporting them dropping in invite only with just one person, so give it a try. Make sure to kill Lesters Target, Attack the armored truck and deliver Simeons vehicle if they pop up or the create wont drop.
