What made you love and adore GTA IV?

TheOneLibertonian

Write your thoughts on how you love and adore this lovely gem of a masterpiece.

For me personally,GTA IV back then in 2008, I wasn't impressed at all with the game (Back then I was more of a GTA SA fanboy). I felt it was too dark and boring, but once I have seen the true nature and Rockstar's intention on making this game my opinion suddenly changes due to that it is all about chasing that dream that you wanted to but suddenly failed and you start to rise up in this dark and gritty crime story. Niko Bellic is a fantastic protagonist no doubt, and the sudden feeling that you are living in the dirty and uncivilized sh*thole of a city is really amazing. The game makes you not be the player controlling Niko but it makes you be Niko living his life everyday as a person who just left of the boat and start a newlife in America.

(Sorry if my english is not so good it's not my first language)

When I first played it at 10 years old, I wasn't impressed with it. I completed the story and left it be.

Then, about 10 months ago, with the Possible Trinity guide on here, I played through it again, and fell in love with it.

I guess I love it for three main reasons they are:

1) The city. Liberty City looked beautiful in 2008, and it still does now. The atmosphere and washed out autumnal colours really add to it.

2) The story, holy f*ck, the story. Even COD humping ten year old me could recognise how awesome the story was, all three of them in fact, (maybe not TBOGT's though) portrayed different social positions very well, you have the rough outlaw motorcycle gang with Johnny, or the middle class Niko or the supermodels and penthouses Luis.

3) The characters. All of the characters here are really interesting, some for the good, and some for the bad. And they did the whole three protagonists thing really well (SUCK IT V FANBOYS) with each of the characters having different personalities and different goals. For Niko, it's the chance to experience the American Dream and try to get a new start in life, for Johnny, it's him trying to get out if the biker lifestyle, and he does, kinda. And I really don't have any idea what Luis whats.

Definitely agree on what you have said especially on the characters.

1. Story. Undoubtedly one of the best story in GTA.

2. Setting. Liberty City + fall + dark and gritty storyline really live up to its atmosphere.

3. Driving. IMHO the best of all GTA. Unlike V's piece of crap.

4. Niko Bellic. Nothing needs to be said.

5. Well done 3 character implementation with its own share of character development.

LC is a do-it-all city. It can go dark and gritty (like in IV and TLAD), and also full of joy and rainbows (like in TBoGT).

Three things really. The story, atmosphere and city.

If we start with the story I honestly think GTA IV's story isn't just the best R* have done, but one of the best video games stories ever written. Watching Niko and Roman struggling to survive is something I could play over and over again. The characters for the most part are so well written and memorable IMO. GTA IV's story provokes an emotional reaction that other games simply don't and not any other GTA game also.

Onto the atmosphere. It may sound strange that I enjoy the dark and gritty atmosphere in GTA IV since I have VC fanboy roots, but honestly I do. This game literally feels cold and un-nerving at times with the way fog rolls in during late night/early morning hours, the consistent rain etc. R* should've add more random street crime though such as muggings, car jackings etc. That's the only thing I feel is missing from the atmosphere.

Lastly the city which is probably my most adored thing about GTA IV. I wouldn't hesitate in saying that Libertty City is the best city I've ever had the pleasure of playing in as far as the open world genre goes. It's the only city I've invested hard, quality time in exploring and even in saying that after 6 years I've never felt like I've explored everything it has to offer.

It's the kind of city I love just checking out random nooks and crannies even if it just leads to a random back alley. That's what it does for me. It's evident R* took so much time and care to create Liberty City, but sadly most people just want maps with countryside and meticulously detailed concrete jungles like Liberty City don't get the appreciation they deserve.

Honestly I could keep going on as that's just scratching the surface, but I'd be here all day. :p

The storyline and how almost in detail it was during its time is what made me love the the main story and it's episodes. While gta 5 was in even more detail, the story could of been a lot longer and characters could of been given more detail.

R* captured city atmosphere so well in IV that unfortunately did not carry over to V in same extent IMO.

All the little details and various gameplay elements keep me still playing GTA IV even today. Everything else is already said by previous posters.

Honestly, I have loved every GTA game I have played (which is III through Episodes of Liberty City) and I love them all for pretty much the same reasons.

Great Stories with great characters.

Great Maps (Okay, Liberty City Stories was kinda bad, but I guess since it was a PSP game originally that used the GTA III map that can be excused)

Lots of Minigames or stupid things to find.

My favorite games to date have been GTA:SA and GTA:VC. Havent played V yet as my PS3 broke last year before its release and I decided to wait for PS4/PC versions to come out.

I guess it's that feeling. So many people diss the gloomy atmosphere (which is just stupid to me) but I love it, it really makes LC feel real.

I can't imagine LC without that dark gloomy feel.

Oh and something I didn't mention. Cinematic executions. The executions in GTA IV give it a unique feel that no other GTA has. I bet I wasn't the only one who was left speechless ending Vlad the first time.

I really liked that Roman was basically a comedy character for the whole story but when he dies I didn't expect it to be so serious
